Arrived on time and listened to my worries about the water getting in the basement. They gave me a quote for the outside and inside the basement that was more work than I planned to do. They were very thorough in explaining what they planned on doing in the basement and made thorough measurements of the basement. When I said I wanted a quote on just the outside, they came over again and modified the estimate with only the outside and modified the quote to save me money. They were easy to talk with and very knowledgeable. Didn't go with them because another company's evaluation was less invasive and costly. The result was just what I was looking for, not overly obvious and less costly without any maintenance.
Description of Work: House is located on a hill and I was getting water in the basement. Also was gutting my kitchen located at the bottom of the hill and wanted to make sure the water damage would not effect the new kitchen. They come over two times to provide a quote for the work to be done. They were very cooperative in changing their initial estimate to what I wanted them to do.

The entire experience was extremely favorable. They installed a pressure relief system which is basically a french drain around the entire basement and a sump pump. It took two days to complete which is what they anticipated. The workers were clean, courteous and professional. From beginning to end from when I met the inspector to price the job (Bob) until when they left after installation it has been an extremely favorable experience. I highly recommend this company and you won't get a better price from a quality organization. I know because I brought in 5 "A" rated companies all from Angie's list and they gave me the lowest bid. These guys are the best from top to bottom don't even bother looking anywhere else...save your time and money and bring in these guys to the work.

It went very well. Roland came out and gave us a written estimate. he was very knowledgable and answered all our questions. His price was very good and generally in line with 2 others we received, but I felt most confortable with Roland and his reviews on Angies. We agreed on a date and his team showed up as scheduled. Roland was there quite a bit and I felt he had control of the situation. He accomodated a few requests we had and I was able to stay in touch with him during the day from work. His team was very professional and they finished within the estimated 3 days. They were very friendly and left everything cleaner than they found it. My wife was very impressed with the way they got the torn up concrete out of the basement. Everything looks great and so far so good. However, since installation we have yet to have any real rain, so I will have to wait and see how the system performs. I will add to the reveiw at that time. I expect it will function as advertised. I would definitely recommend A-1 to others needing such a basement waterproofing service.
Description of Work: A-1 waterproofed my basement by putting, essentially, a French Drain around the full perimeter leading to a sump pump (primary and battery backup). The sump pump will pump water out of the basement through pipes leading to a drainage area they put in my front yard undet a Holly tree, so it is not that noticable.

We received an initial estimate and then after 1 meeting with Roland there was no other contact.
Description of Work: A consultant came out and gave us an initial estimate- though it took over a week after that to finally talk with Roland a foreman of sorts to discuss details of the estimate- it is one month after the first contact and we have never recieved a rewrite of a second estimate revising the work on our basement system. He called me on Monday 7\15\13 saying he was out of town for 2 days and after calling the office on 7\17- still no one got back to us- very poor communication and customer service. We will obviously not be working with this company as they have very poor follow up.

Response from American A-1 Waterproofing
Please be advised that American A-1 deeply regrets any miscommunication. When we called the Nyack Building Department to inquire about permits and were told to apply for a NY state license (we are a New Jersey based company). This process can take from 4 to 8 weeks. I did leave a detailed message explaining this but I did not follow through to insure my message was received. Our company has an A+ rating with the BBB and never had a complaint in 23 years of business. During hurricanes, nor’easter, and state of emergency flooding, my customers were able to contact me 24 hours around the clock. My customers are very important to me and I serve them to the best of my ability. Again, I apologize for not communicating better and I take full responsibility for that, but I have to follow the laws that are required to legally conduct business. Roland Achtau President/Owner

We don't have a major water issue in the basement, but we are finishing it, and to do all that work and then have it ruined by a little water is just not worth it, so we called some basement waterproofers Company owner gave a full description of the work to be done and the quote was in line with what I expected. I had received a number of quotes and this seemed most reasonable, not the cheapest, but at the same time, the cheaper quotes that I had received were untrustworthy and did not offer the same service offered by America A-1. He did not try to sell me more than what I needed and overall I felt comfortable with this company. We'd also received some recommendations as well for this company from friends in a neighboring town that has a lot of flood issues, so all combined it was a good choice. They arrived on time, the first day, but delayed the secod day because of a snow storm, which was no big deal, Crew was professional and courteous and kept things as neat as possible, considering they were breaking up the concrete floor in the basement, which could raise a lot of dust. i was thoroughly satisifed with the end result. The new concrete was laid smooth and feathered to be flush with the existing floor. I've tested the pumps and all seem in working order. The basin was placed right where I wanted it. Overall thoroughly satisfied with my choice to go with this company.
Description of Work: Installed basement perimeter drain, sump pit, two A/C powered pumps with 1 battery backup pump, drain board and flashing to grade to direct water into drain and drain pipe to basin in rear of backyard.

They worked out really well. They were very professional and very organized. They were a pleasure to work with and they guarantee and warranty their work. Their price was good and I've had a very positive experience with them all the way around. There are a lot of different techniques to waterproofing a basement and the part of the issue for us was trying to figure out which was the correct technique. Everybody else tries to sell you their technique, but there are very different ways of managing it. It depends on what the issue is, so they were really the right ones for us and it worked out really well. We were very happy with their work.

The job took 3 days and they were very professional and took care of cleaning up the mess. It was very hard work and they did a great job and I am very pleased. Roland came around every day to check on the work being done properly and was very helpful whenever I called with questions before starting the job. I would definitively recommend this company to my friends.

These guys are terrific. Roland and his team were prompt, courteous, professional, informative, and completely willing to discuss the various solutions that would achieve our goals. Many of these guys have worked for the firm for 10, 15 or 20 years - this is obviously a great place to work and everyone took pride in the finished product. A 2-day job became 6 days of work due to the (not unexpected) poor condition of my foundation; the crew worked on Saturday and didn't make me wait to complete the job even though they must have had had other jobs to get to; they stayed at my site until the work was completed. Once onsite, they worked with me to design and install a drainage system to address persistent issues with runoff. Absolutely the best value for money of any contractor who has worked on my home in the 11 years since I bought it. My boyfriend is a construction manager for very large projects and he also was delighted with the work performed and the results. Bottom line - a dry basement, and I will never leak again!
Description of Work: Initial inquiry was to address water seeping through the wall of my basement. This required digging to approx 7' below grade, parging the foundation, application of impermeable membrane, and backfilling Substantial additional work was required to repair my foundation (130 year old fieldstone), which was in terrible condition. In addition, new drainage was installed to re-route water away from the foundation

They were fabulous and really great. They did a wonderful job from start to finish. They were excellent. I was most happy with them. I just like the way they handled everything. The guy came out first and showed me everything. It was very professional and the work was done beautifully. I haven’t had a drop of water in my crawl space with a lot of big rain and snow storms. Their price was a regular price and it wasn’t terrible expensive. I would tell the other members to absolutely use them.

Job was done fairly well. Workers were on-time. Supervisor was professional and helpful. Workers could have been a bit neater. Even with hung plastic sheeting, the floor break-up generated considerably fine concrete dust which permeated the entire room. Workers set up supplies and equipment on lawn, which caused some minor damage to grass.Company priced job with one pipe exit plan, but I agree to another that saved them labor. They reduced the project price only $100, not sufficient for the labor costs the change saved them. System was explained clearly. No problems to date. Basement room where job was done is dry.
Description of Work: Installed drain in basement area floor that paralleled two cinder block walls. Covered lower two feet with plastic film. Installed sump pump and pipe to remove water from sump.

American A1 was the first company to contact us when we contacted companies through Angie's list and another internet site. Bob Desopo called us right away and arranged to come look at the house. Bob came to the house as scheduled, walked the basement with me to understand the issue and then took 20 minutes to scope out the job on his own. Bob inspected both inside and out and then sat down with us to explain everything. Not only did he explain the system they were putting in and how it would work but he explained the different types of foundations in the house, e.g. fieldstone in some sections, etc.and how that impacted what they would do.Within a day or two we received the proposal from Bob as promised. We had a question about the proposal as there was a significant crack that might have been outside the proposed trench and Bob said he would come back just to take a look and make sure it was addressed in the proposal. Bob came the next day and, much to our surprise, brought Roland, the owner of American A1 with him. They looked at the area and said it would be included in the original price that we had received. In addition, Roland went through the basement and said there might be a possibility they might not be able to go under two interior wall but said if they had to trench around them they would do it at no cost to us. The price we received from A1 was reasonable and we really appreciated the customer service that we had received so we decided to go with American A1.As soon as we executed the contract Bob called and asked us when we wanted to start the project. They gave us enough time to move everything in the basement away from the walls and didn't pressure us to start sooner. They even offered to help move the larger items in the basement like the refrigerator and freezer. The American A1 crew, led by the foreman Ronald, should up on time the first day and he walked through everything with us again. Very courteous and very professional. The entire project took only 3 days which was what they estimated. The first day the crew started with 4-5 guys and by the afternoon a few more came to start removing some of the broken concrete and dirt from the trenches. The second day there were probably 10 guys there to continue the work in the basement and beginning drilling through the wall the place the pipe out the the front. Ronald talked to us everyday about what they were doing and where they were in the project. When the projected was completed, Ronald showed us everything the did including putting extra flashing around a pipe where I said there had been some water trickling as well as patching some areas in the wall and floor where he felt water might have come in. They were not asked to do that and he performed the work at his own discretion which we really appreciated. We obviously have not seen the system work yet as we have not received significant rain but as of now I would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending American A1. They were completely professional, did everything they said they were going to do and then some.
Description of Work: We incurred significant amounts of water in our basement during last year's hurricane. Over time the water in the basement has gotten significantly worse during storms. The basement floor had noticeable cracks and the two manual sump pumps could not keep up.We decided it was time to put drains in with an automatic sump pump so to prevent further damage to the foundation or potential damage to the water heater, furnace, etc in the basement.American A1 installed 135 feet of drains connected to 2 automatic sump pumps that feeds the water through a pipe extended from the basement, under the front porch, and into a drain box they installed in the front yard area. The process included jack hammering a 22 inch wide/14 inch trench around the entire perimeter of the basement, removing all the broken concrete and dirt from the basement, installation of the drain pipes, filling the trench with gravel, re-cementing the floor over the filled trench, installation of the sump pumps, digging up an area in the yard to install the drain box, and replacing the grass back over the piping in the front yard.

Jeff came to our home and gave us an estimate. He also was kind enough to point out some other updates we could do to the home. After receiving information from other sources, Jeff put us at ease that our home was on solid and in great shape. The workers about 8 showed up prepared to work. Repaired several windows where water was coming in from the outside. Dug around the whole basement installed was was necessary to prevent water in the basement. Everything was done in a very professional manner. They were very concerned about dust getting into the home. Lou the forman was very kind to my Mother taking extra special care of her questions and concernes. I spoke to Roland in the beginning and was happy with the response I received with the office. Upon completion of the repairs to the basement, everything was place back where it was and it was clean as a whistle. My Mom had an issue with her stove, and we thought it may have been a circut breaker or gas shutoff. I called at 5 one eve and Lou took the 45 minute ride to NY from NJ to be sure that everything was ok. He found that the problem had nothing what they did but a problem with the stove, again putting my Mom at ease. I am very happy with the results and the 25 year quarantee. All is well!

Jeff Del Vecchio came to our house to give suggestions and estimate for waterproofing. He was knowledgeable, pleasant and accurate. On the scheduled day, on time, a crew led by forman Morris ? arrived and started the project. They were extremely pleasant and polite. They protected the flooring in the access to the basement and installed a plastic door to help prevent dust from entering the rest of our house. They passed most of the debris out and the new perforated PVC pipe, sump pumps and new concrete in through a window so it didn't contaminate the rest of the house. They installed new french drains next to all outside walls, two new primary sump pumps, a battery powered back up pump, a new sump pump pit, and a new exit for the rain water. They finished the new concrete over their work very nicely. Before leaving the crew wiped clean the new six foot high sealed polystyrene flashing system on the basement walls and hosed down the driveway of any debris. This project took three days, as advertised, and we were very pleased.

We had a chronic problem with rain seeping up from the ground around our basement bulkhead, and down the bulkhead steps. This problem, coupled with a day-long power outage, meant that we had a couple inches of water in our basement during Hurricane Irene...our 3 sump pumps weren't powered and the one existing battery back up pump failed. We also discovered that water collected behind a flip-door covering an old coal chute. Bob DeSopo came out and thoroughly looked at our basement, detailed the problem areas, and discussed solutions. A written proposal/contract followed, and the estimated cost was notably less than that of other basement waterproofers who looked at the job - far less carefully than Bob, I might add. The crew came out a few weeks later and in one day extended our existing french drain (required the services of a plumber - which Bob arranged - in order to move the hot water heater and a toilet), installed a floor drain at the foot of the bulkead, installed a drain at the base of the coal chute, and supplied and installed three battery backup sump pumps. We were responsible for replacing floor tile removed to put in the floor drain, as well as drywall for our enclosed bathroom in the basement. Six weeks later, we continue to have a dry basement despite rains that previously would've resulted in at least a trickle of water from the bulkhead. No hurricane, though, thank goodness - that will be the supreme test!

I spent $4850 on that work. They were really good. The owner came out and walked me through all the pluses and minuses and told me information which was for my benefit and not his. His pricing was very transparent. He was very clear about who will be doing the work and he had some trusted foreman. His crew was just fantastic. It went smoothly which is exactly how you would want a project to go. They came when they said and finished when they said. All the statements made to us when the estimate was given wre true and accurate. We did our homework on them and they do indeed have an A rating with BBB (which they mentioned) as well as being the only company in NJ whose work is certified by their professional organization. The only minor issue I had with them is that, they thought the job was completed BEFORE they moved the washer/dryer back into position (not a task a homeowner should do themselves with stacked appliances). Instead, the job was to be complete when the basement was back the way it was. However, as I say, this was a minor issue because they immediately returned, put the W/D back and cleaned up. So we were happy to use them and they even used the extra concrete to repair a part of the floor in our basement as they were leaving. I hope to never need them again, however, if I do ever need waterproofing services again, they will be the company I go to.
Description of Work: They placed a french drain along one side in the basement. They also placed a sump and extended the drain into the gutter system and extended that across the street and into a ravine.

He is fantastic. He is very specific regarding the work he does. He does underground waterproofing. He has been very accurate, polite and very responsive. He provides explanations when there are delays. He is very keen on following through. He started the work recently and so far, I have been pleased with the way he has presented the information. He called me at the end of the day and made sure that I knew exactly what was done during the day. He will continue to do that until the project is completed. He is licensed and insured. The other contractors that I had contacted were very ambivalent to be concerned about permits. That was one of the biggest reasons that I had decided to use him. He is very forthcoming about information regarding his insurance and licensing. He even helped me get the permits from the city; he took care of that. He is part of a professional organization. I plan to use his services again in the future.

They were generally punctual. The work was very good for what they did. The price seemed fair for what they did.
Description of Work: They put french drains in the basement and diverted downspouts to central drainage system.
