American A-1 Waterproofing

The owner of this provider, Roland, was very professional and helpful even after I notified him that we were going in a different direction. Specifically, he reminded me of an issue to raise with the other provider that he had noticed might escape the notice of other folks, which reminder I very much appreciated.

Description of Work: The initial consultation with Nick went very well and I got a very good feeling about the company. The work was scheduled 5 weeks in advance but the day came and nobody showed up. It turned out they had the wrong cell number for me and were leaving messages to the wrong voicemail. They were trying to tell me that the work was delayed due to a requirement by my town - this delayed the start date by over a month which was a big hassle. I think they should have emailed me when they didn't get me on the phone. When the work finally began, the weather was terrible and slowed the progress, but the team of workers was extremely hard-working and should be commended. A minor complaint is I had to do some clean up after they left, but overall, they adjusted to all the curveballs and a month after the foundation repair and basement system installation, I am satisfied. The expense was a big but the work needed to be done right and by professionals, and that's what I got.

Description of Work: Jeff came by our house last year to assess our basement and home exterior to make recommendations for a waterproofing job. He reassured us that it didn't seem to be too bad and listed several DIY projects we could do to try to improve the situation before we called him. We appreciated his honesty. We kept their card and called them for a french drain estimate this year because more severe weather overrode any good our efforts did. He gave us a fair estimate and time to think it over while we got other quotes. We went with another company who finished the job in a shorter time frame (one day as opposed to three-four, but no drywell or second pump as Jeff's team would have done for us). We will keep A-1 in mind for any future home improvement projects, and highly recommend them.

Description of Work: This is the second time I have used A-1. The first time last year, they did the front section of my house where I was having some water coming into the basement through cracks around pipes in my foundation.....excellent work. Then, this winter, an underground pipe coming from a downspout at the back of my house cracked....causing some structural problems. I spoke to Roland and he sent Lu to fix my foundation and re-route a new pipe from downspout. Once again, the team did a super job. I think, hopefully, I will never have any problems anywhere else along other parts of my foundation, but if I do, I will not hesitate to call Roland. These guys are so professional and knowledgable. They are A+.

Description of Work: American A-1 regraded the concrete surrounding our basement entrance. They also recemented the basement door and installed a gutter with drain around our house to make for better rainwater drainage. | |Our experience with American A-1 is mixed - here is a short recap of how the project went. To begin with, Roland, the owner, is very knowledgeable and professional. He came to our house twice so we could set up a plan to improve rainwater drainage from our backyard and agreed on the work we wanted done. He seems to be very busy - it is difficult to get hold of him (unless there is an emergency); that is why I gave a C to responsiveness. | |A foreman was in charge of the project. The project initially took two days and the guys worked very neat. They cleaned up everything, were polite and accurate. | |When the concrete was dry, my husband turned on the water to see if it indeed would flow away from the house as was the goal of the project. Instead of going away from the house and basement entrance, it flowed directly towards it. We called Roland, who came over the same day, acknowledged the mistake and agreed to fix it. All good so far. But this is when things became sloppier. | |Roland, the foreman and my husband looked at what needed to be done to fix the problem. Roland mentioned improvements (taking out the gutter and placing it further back, replacing a slab of concrete) to my husband, who agreed. Then they left. When the foreman and one of his guys came back, they did not do what Roland had mentioned to us. The foreman only took out the concrete, which he replaced but it now looks different from the earlier installed concrete. He also improved the recementing of the basement door. The work was done late afternoon/early evening and he got a little upset with me only having a simple porch light to provide him with enough light to work with. | |To sum it up: it all started out great. But when the mistake had to be fixed, it became less great. So would we use American A-1 in the future? I don't know - I definitely would research some other companies first. What we learned from the experience is to have more details in writing before we let a contractor dig up part of the yard and driveway. Our water problem is solved, that is the good news. But in our perspective it is not exactly solved the way we thought we had agreed on.

Description of Work: Despite a french drain and a sump pump, I had some leaking in the finished basement. Just on one wall though. Roland came, reviewed the problem and offered a solution - dig out the "existing pipe', put in one that is wider and connect it with the remaining drainage system; drill holes to relieve water behind blocks. The crew arrived on the scheduled day on time. Once we "opened" the walls, a new problem became visible, but all I had to do is call Roland and he came by to assess the new situation and offer a solution to my satisfaction. |I was very happy with the work, the courteous crew and the fact that you can reach out to Roland and he picks up the phone and answers any questions. I would definitely use this company again.
