The owner was surly and initially wanted payment in advance before his worker would do any work. We had gone to several different providers for estimates but chose American Leak Detection because they told us they had the equipment to look down the pipes and identify where the break was. We had some knowledge that the prior owners had been putting chlorine tabs in the skimmer basket rather than the chlorinator and that this could cause pipe damage. Anthony did identify a break in the pipes, cut out that piece and replaced it. He showed me the work and told me he had tested the pipe to make sure the water ran all they way thru from the pool pump thru the 3 returns in the pool. This initial work was performed in the Fall of 2013 and the pool was already closed so we had no way to verify the accuracy of his statement. When the pool was opened in the Spring of 2014 we found out that the water was not circulating thru the pipes. We called in the people that service our pool and they had to lay pipes above ground to push water thru the returns. I contacted Jackie in the main office and she said that the boss says the subsequent damage must have happened after Anthony performed the initial repairs. How could that have happened - the pool was closed. Anthony came out to test the pool and said there was an additional break in the pipes. He was supposed to have visually identified and repaired all breaks with the initial inspection. How could he test the pipes end to end - as he represented with his Fall 2013 repairs - if there was an additional break? I had just been diagnosed with cancer and was in no position to argue with American Leak Detection. We used the pool minimally that Summer 2014 but had it serviced regularly by our pool company. American Leak Detection never made good on the incomplete work they performed. They were miserable to work with. I would not recommend them.
Description of Work: Identified a malfunction in the pvc pipes servicing in the in-ground pool. Repaired the break by digging up and cutting out the old pipe and replacing it with new pipe.

Response from AMERICAN LEAK DETECTION - NORTH & CENTRAL NJ
American Leak Detection of New Jersey (ALD) first did work for this member on October 7, 2013. The online review comes as somewhat of a surprise. Detailed job reports are kept on file; below is a description of services (copied verbatim) performed on this member’s swimming pool: “Cut both pool return lines and performed camera inspection of lines. Main return line showed kinking in tiger flex. Kinking is approximately 4 feet from where pipe enters the ground. Second line for step jet showed signs of chlorine damage, but no kink yet. Recommend replacing both lines of hard PVC up to kink in line to avoid this happening again.” State-of-the-art line-camera technology was used to determine the pool plumbing was compromised. Future problems could occur if not replaced with modern pipe material. ALD advised and strongly recommended replacement of both pool lines. This member declined the recommended repair and requested the most inexpensive “spot” repair, addressing only the current problem. Repairs were scheduled for Saturday, October 25, 2013. The estimate indicated a full days’ work. The rest of the line was checked for other problems at that time. A pressure test was performed on the line (a secondary measure, standard procedure) to ensure the repair was sound and there were no other leaks or blockages. The Angie’s List report indicates ALD did not find (or inform) of more leaks, and mentions the technician showed the tested line to the customer, and indicated no leaks present. The pressure test would have revealed subsequent leaks in the system, which would have been addressed then. ALD was contacted by this member again In May of 2014, following an extremely cold winter. The pool in question had problems; either loss of water, or pipe blockage. Symptoms were unclear, but a review of the October repair was requested. The technician confirmed the strength of the repair using sonar and cameras. Repairs carry a 1-year warranty. A new leak had developed on the remainder section of the pipe. This member saw that the new problems were not in the area of the repaired pipe. As predicted, the faulty pipes had developed more issues, possibly due to the cold winter weather. This service call and check of our repair was done free of charge. As this was a new issue, a new leak detection was necessary. The technician identified two issues on two separate pipes. The return line had a break, and the skimmer line had a blockage. Both were marked above ground. This member was billed $475.00 for a new leak detection service. She requested the fee be incorporate into the bill for the repairs, in order to pay it later. This adjustment was granted by the owner. This member requested the owner call her to discuss the details of this new repair, as she was disappointed her pool again needed work. The owner, Bud, called this member right away. She requested a discount since she had already had one repair. Bud agreed to reduce the price to that of a detection service call: from $495 to $175. This member needed two repairs, both requiring a great deal of work, and could have been avoided if the pipes had been replaced the previous October. This member requested a written estimate (below) before scheduling. The job would be a minimum of $1,675 for up to six hours of work, and included detection fee, which was already performed. Time spent at repair site after the first six hours was billed an additional charge of $175 per hour. Cost of parts was included as well. ALD phoned and confirmed receipt of the estimate. This member stated she would schedule the repairs and pay the detection fee at the time of the job. As of August 1, 2015, This member has not paid the detection fee of $475. This member never indicated that she was offended by Bud, nor that she felt ALD had done anything improper or incorrectly. ALD followed all standard procedures and kept accurate records throughout. As with every valued customer, we did our absolute best work and pride ourselves on providing excellent customer service and strive to be honest and fair with our customers, always. American Leak Detection of New Jersey hopes this outline of events clarifies any questions or concerns regarding our company. We are sorry to hear that This member was ill and we hope she is feeling better. Thank you
