Description of Work: The furnace broke down completely early Wednesday morning. I called a few minutes after 9 am and someone was at my door less than 2 hours later. A new furnace was ordered immediately after it could not be started again. The new furnace arrived the next day and installation commenced as promised. However, I had been calling in vain to request repairs/a replacement of the thermostat for weeks, so I received a discount on labor.

I would Highty Recommend Air Quality for anyone wanting Heating and Air conditioning done in there homes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sincerely,Gail Romero
Description of Work: The Air Quailty staff was outstanding in the way that my home was treated, that I was treated, and the installation that took place. Drop clothes were placed on my first and second floors to protect my home. Installation went off without any proplems. No running back and forth to get this part or that part. Everything was brought to the home that morning. Installation was done in a timely manner, by the afternoon we had air conditioning thru out the house. The units installed were as described by Dan Kutx, the comfort consultant. After the installation, Dan explained the use of the units, how to maintain the units. No question went unanswered. Thank you Quality Air for a job well done.

The beginning of the story was hard. It was very hard to get the work scope approved by the program since the system we were installing was too advanced for the computer software that had been designed for the program. The Home Performance Program’s computer system was programmed to replace an inefficient furnace with a more efficient furnace not to replace two inefficient furnaces with one super efficient boiler and their software was designed to replace a less efficient hot water heater with a more efficient hot water heater not with an indirect hot water heater which requires no flame. So then because the system we wanted to install was much more advanced than the program was prepared to accept their software kept spitting out our work scope and my contractor kept trying different ways to get Home Performance to accept our system because our system was so much better than what was recommended and I was really sick of having average utility bills exceeding $900.00 every month. The program rebates were essential for me to be able to afford a system like this. As long as I was going to spend over $30,000.00 out of my own pocket for a new heating and cooling system before any rebates were considered I wanted the best and the proposed work scope by Air King aka Air Quality was considered to be the best not only by the opinion of other heating and cooling contractors, but also by deductive reasoning and ultimately concluded with the loads and the calculations of each systems use of gas and electric needed to satisfy the same thermostat settings. The Home Performance Program's system software was also not equipped to accept two stage air conditioning units and kept telling us that we were only allowed to put in 2 1/2 ton units which would have not cooled the house on very hot days instead of the 3 ton units that were necessary. The owner of Air King, Mike Monica, personally went to meet with the program designer of Home Performance and had to prove mathematically that the two stage 3 ton units would be more efficient and save more electricity than the 2 1/2 ton single stage units before they let us use them. We were setting new precedents in just about everything in the work scope Also foaming and air sealing with foam is the latest technology for insulating a home. The State Program wanted us to dump 6 inches of cellulose on the attic floor which would have meant building a new floor and to seal the rim joist with silicon. In the basement the State recommended we put up polysacronate board on the walls and seal the rim joist with foam. They deducted $1,000.00 from our rebate because we used a better more expensive method to air seal just because "that wasn't the way they did it". It was worth the $1,000.00 because it made a really BIG difference. The way the program spit out it's recommendations to fix this house was a cheaper way to do it but a much less efficient way to accomplish the end results and I was paying the difference not the State so I really to this day don't understand why they made it so difficult for us. I guess we were considered to be rebels and non conforming activist and that just didn't work for them because they were used to doing it one way and only that one way. It literally took us months of intervention at the very top to get our system approved and then other obstacles kept popping up. Before the job was started it took almost a full year of planning. The owner of the company was directly involved in getting this job started and since I hadn't realized what he was going through to get the programs wrinkles ironed out and our system approved I kept blaming him for delaying the job. I must have fired him and rehired him 5 times and he must have quit and reconsidered another 5 times before the job was started. But it would be remis for me to not report what follows. I am one of the most particular guys when it comes to the performance of any kind of work and I am the most critical person on the earth when I review the results of efforts put into a job. I had owned my own manufacturing business in the US where for over 25 years I produced not only the best but the number 1 product quality wise in it's category because I am a detail orientated perfectionist who is probably certifiably crazy over the demands he makes on people to produce quality work. Every single detail on my product needed to be perfect or it went back and was fixed. I earned a reputation for making the absolute best quality product of it's type on this planet and I'm not joking. I still can't accept products that are simply "good enough" and I always seek out the ones that are the best. Unfortunately the best are worse than the adverage was 30 years ago. When Air King's crew finally got started working here it was one of the most amazing coordination of organization that I have ever seen. I appreciate how hard it is to do that and how at times it becomes impossible but this guy Mike must be a genius in his own right and not even realize how good he is. There were at least 7 guys working in this house at the same time and on the busiest day 9 and besides these guys working together the way a fine Swiss watch's gears meld they were making and installing everything they did with extraordinary care, precision, quality and speed. I was jealous, but I was so impressed that I went out two times and bought everyone lunch and we all sat down at a big table and ate together and the boss even came and ate with us one day. It was more like a family project than a contractor work scope. But it was my nature to look for and to find things that were done wrong or corners that were cut or things that were not done exactly as stated in the work scope contract. You know how contractors tell you a whole lot of flowery stuff when they are bidding on a job and then cut corners and just give you "good enough" for you to not be able to put your finger on a valid complaint. Well with this guy I kept looking and looking and looking and I was even starting to get disappointed and frustrated when I couldn't find one single detail wrong but I did find things that I wasn't happy with. However, each time I found something I didn't like, the owner Mike was right there responding to my complaint and having it fixed perfectly. At one point the entire attic duct work was finished and I was unhappy with it because they had used too much flex duct and not left the attic in good position for foaming. It was acceptable, and it was finished and I didn't expect it to be done over I just wanted it made a little easier for the foaming that was going to cost almost $9,000.00. The owner Mike came down looked at it listened to what I had to say and right there on the spot turned to his foreman and said "Do it over and do it like this" (which was a little better than what I had expected him to do) the foreman started to toss around buts trying to convince the boss that it would be no better our way but both of us the owner and I knew our way was better and the owner said to the foreman very calmly do it like this and not another word was said about it. It was done and it came out beautiful. Wow was I impressed. And this contractor came in with a price that was $5,000.00 less than the next lowest bid. Now when you are having a $40,000.00 heating and cooling job done you expect that some things will go wrong.. Not only did very little go wrong but every little detail that did go wrong was attended to so fast and efficiently that one did not have the time to realize anything was ever wrong to begin with. When a circuit board in an electronic device was bad it was shipped overnight and replaced within 2 days. So the entire job was finished in less than 10 days and I now have the best most advanced heating and cooling system and the highest R value insulated and air sealed house in the city of Paramus. There are 3 brand new houses that were just built surrounding my house. Each of these houses is selling for one million dollars or more. I went to look at their heating and cooling system and they pale compared to mine. I have a very good friend who is a Master Plumber. I have never seen him compliment another plumber’s work because he is a perfectionist himself and just never sees anything special with someone else’s work. His name is Joe. His wife put a sign on his truck when the Presidential Election was going on that said this is "Joe The Plumber". He is one of my best friends and one of the nicest and most decent guys I know. He's a simple guy who is all class and he is a man of few words who would rather listen than speak. He looked at this job and I respect this man's opinion like I do no other man. He said three words. Three words that I never heard him say about another's work. Those three words were “WOW STRAIGHT PIPES” which in Joe's language means this guy did a really great job for you and I agree he did do a great job but I still can’t believe I can’t find anything else wrong; cause I can always find something wrong... except not this time.
Description of Work: I had my entire heating and cooling system replaced. I had 2 separate hot air furnaces 2 air condensers for 2 separate central air conditioning units one 75 gallon hot water heater and two completely separate duct work systems ripped out and done over with super efficient clean energy systems.. I had this work done through the NJ Clean Energy Home Performance for Energy Star Program which supplemented the costs with rebates and no interest loans but I still needed to come up with a lot of cash of my own. This company which also goes by the names of Air King Heating and Cooling Inc. and Instant Air Heating and Cooling is approved and certified to do work scope projects for the program (you must use a certified contractor in order to get the rebates and loan). They are also BPI certified. They replaced my old inefficient pig of a system with the following: The heating and hot water is now all done indirectly with a Triangle Stainless Steel Boiler that hangs on the wall, is 95% efficient, and no longer is vented through the roof where my 2 old furnaces used to throw away 30% of the heat they made. The new boiler is vented through the side wall of the house where it also takes in fresh air that is used for burning the gas. That one boiler now supplies hot water coils to heat the air that is sent around the house with 2 air handlers. The boiler also heats the hot water in a indirect hot water heater or holding tank which needs no flame and has 3 times the recovery speed of the old hot water heater. There is now only one flame in the house the one for the boiler which replaces 3 separate flames. The air handlers also move the cool air conditioned air through the 2 separate duct work systems. The one boiler burns the gas so efficently that it is vented through the side wall of my house with PVC pipe instead of up through the roof; it burns up 95% of the gas used for heat and hot water and only emits 5% cool by products of that gas. The boiler is also entirely closed and sealed off from the house since it also draws the air it needs to burn the gas from another pvc pipe which goes directly through the side wall of the house. Therefore I no longer need to be concerned that there is enough O2 in the utility room and I also no longer need to be concerned of a flame burning in the attic where my wife puts everything she doesn't want in the living space any more. The two air condensers work through the same two air handlers except that they are different coils that fill with cold gas in the summertime to allow the same air handlers to circulate cool air. The new air conditioning units replaced two 8 seer single stage 3 ton units with two 18 seer dual stage 3 ton units (the higher the seer rating the more efficient the unit is and the less electricity it uses to get the same result as lower seer units). Both air handlers are fitted with detection devices which will automatically shut down the system if they detect any water in the drip pan that could be unlikely caused by a leak in the hot water coils or a blockage in the drain line that drains the condensation from the cold pipes in summer. They ripped out two entirely separate duct work systems since they were old, improperly sized, disgustingly filthy, poorly sealed, poorly designed, bent, stepped on, leaking duct work systems that had only one return for 4 bedrooms with doors, 2 bathrooms a hallway and stairwell. They replaced that system with all new properly sized ductwork wrapped with insulation, and added returns to all the rooms which all come together to go through an accordion hepa filter before the returned air is conditioned hot or cold again. The output air to the supply after the air passes over the coils be they hot or cold is now zapped with a special ultra violet light that kills any airborne bacteria or virus. A similar duct system was replaced on the first floor also with everything the second floor has except that the output air on the fist floor besides being disinfected with it's own ultra violet light is also humidified with steam from a new Aprilaire steam humidifier that measures the humidity in the air and when necessary shoots a burst of steam in the form of gas into the main floor supply ducts. There is only a need for one humidifier for both floors since the humidity spreads out by itself and steam is the best way to humidify the air (much better than the old roller systems because steam is so much cleaner than water as it is pure H2O in a gaseous state. They also sealed the house by foaming the basement walls, and rim joist with closed cell foam sprayed afterward with fire retardant paint and the attic roof rafters and rim joist with open cell foam; also all the holes in the roof that had previously vented the two furnaces and hot water heater have been closed up, and sealed inside, outside and foamed over. New dryer vents and bathroom vents replaced old improperly vented ones and entire house and all gas lines were checked for any small leaks with electronic detectors that detect miniscule amounts of gas. Blower door test were performed both before and after the work was done and showed a huge reduction in the air leakage from the house.
