I spoke to Gary from Competitive Siding and discussed the work that needed to be done to the house I just purchased (roof repair, gutter replacement, and fixing some cedar shake siding) He gave me a date that worked well for him and I agreed. The time was set for Tuesday @ 4:30pm. I contacted Gary that morning to confirm, and he does. Then Gary calls me at 4pm to tell me he's running late and will not make it (over an hour away... calls me last minute?). I offered to wait for him but he said he has some workers to drop off and and we'll have to reschedule. Instead of rescheduling with me while on the phone, he said he'll call me in the morning. He never called. I left early from work that day and wasted my time for nothing.

Response from Competitive Aluminum Inc
(Member name removed), With the roofing damage hurricane Sandy inflicted on our customers, and the burden the hurricane put on them, our company had to prioritize our roofing estimates. When you communicated to me that you don't even own the house, and your trying to purchase it, I lost the sense of urgency. I gave you a two and half hour cancellation notice because I was working for another Angie's list customer in Blairstown. You said you work 15 minutes away, no big deal. In place of me, I sent my roofing foreman just to measure, but you were with another roofer.

They responded quickly however the quality of the workmanship was very poor. I used them for this repair because I am the person who put them on Angie's List when they did a final siding job on three sides of my home. They had done a very good job so I put them on Angie's List with a very high rating for that siding work. This is why I called them for the repair, however I was very disappointed in the quality of the work this time. On the bay window on the front of my house they ripped everything off to eliminate leaking that was coming from that window where the artificial stucco was. They replaced all of the shingles and did this with weatherstripping. However, when the roofer did the weatherstripping he put tar under it and on both sides of the bay window. He ending up leaving me with two bricks partially covered with black tar on the front side of my house. Their roofing mechanic also installed the roofing material for the bay window; he put it in crooked and the right side was lower than the left. When I saw this and the tar, I asked him to please trim it so it will look acceptable. He had to take a special scissor and cut it and trim it down so that the right side didn't hang lower than the left over the bay window. When he installed the wood trim (which had to be removed to replace the artificial stucco, which ran from my bay window to my bedroom window) he had to remove some of the dark brown wood trim boards. Unfortunately, the quality of the carpentry in replacing the wood trim was not good, and he had to do this several times for the mitered corners to look good. Work was also done above the bay window. We had to remove all the wood, which also got replaced, but the mitered corners over the bay window were awful. The product was called hardy board which is made out of processed concrete, and this is what we used to repair the deteriorated stucco (they bought the material). He ordered it and proceeded to take measurements. He had to fit it in over the bay window and he cut it incorrectly across the width--it was cut 3-4 inches too short. There wasn't enough material left over so we had to make do. The side where it was too short is the side where we had leakage. I told him that I had extra roofing shingles from my last roofing job so I brought out two shingles and told him I wanted him to cut strips to the length and width to where he cut it too short. He put in a double layer of roofing shingles there per my request; I also had him silicone around it to secure it. He replaced the trim board over it with a new piece of wood and that is what is covering that hole. I'm not sure if this will solve the leakage problem but the quality of the work was terrible. They are okay for siding but do not use them for any carpentry repairs and I would be concerned for any roofing repairs by them. UPDATE: Roof is leaking again.
Description of Work: They did repairs of a roof on my bay window and a repair to the artificial stucco siding on the front of my house, in the area above that bay window. They also replaced some of the wood trim in those two areas.

I would give them a’s on everything. The work is perfect and they are truly master artisans. They don’t just slam things together like other companies have done in the past. One time, a piece wasn’t exactly right so they came back and completely ripped it out and replaced it.

This was our first experience using Angie's List and it definitely paid off. From the first phone call to request an estimate to the completion of the job, Gary was an absolute pleasure to deal with. We started with 7 replacement windows in the basement, and it was a pretty small job, but they treated us like we were one of their biggest customers. They did such an incredible job, we had them come back and do 13 more windows on the main floor of the house. We even decided to change our order a week after it was placed...deciding to eliminate the storm windows and go with all replacements...and Gary was like..."not a problem, let me call the factory right now and see what I can do." Two minutes later he called back and had worked things out...canceled the storms and ordered the replacements. They worked fast, did a top notch job and were respectful of our home, being careful not to track any dirt in and always cleaning up after themselves. Gary even took it upon himself to reposition the brackets for one of our window shades when he realized it wouldn't hang properly once the new window was installed. It's that type of above and beyond service that will have us calling him back to do the windows on our porch in the spring! In an age where no one wants to call you back, and hard working professional craftsman are hard to find, this company truly stands apart from the crowd.

I had 3 different contractors trying to replace the custom made bay windows. They all screwed it up badly and sent the window back. They came out and did the job without any problem. I will give them 5 stars on everything. I was so happy with them that I wrote them a poem. I would recommend them to anybody.
Description of Work: I have used Competitive Aluminum to put in 9 windows. One of the contractors destroyed my wall by pulling off the shingles. They came in, replaced the shingles, painted them, and created new supports to match the rest of the house. They duplicated them and painted them. They also fixed overhang that was rotting and causing damage on something else. I ordered a door and they are coming back to finish the door.

He was very professional. He found the exact window style that I needed. I had several people come out before that took the wrong measurements and made a mess. Competitive aluminum repaired shingles that the other contractor had ruined. He duplicated the outside gingerbread trim that was custom built. They were worth the amount of money.

Estimate was reasonable, men were professional, owner was either on site or checking in to the site a number of times a day - the crew showed up, did the job, cleaned and respected my property. No messing around. I did have an issue with the stiles in the small windows not being proportional, but Gary went to the manufacturer and had them adjusted. If you are doing a special stile design, you may want to note that before hand so it can be addressed. This company also is not out to have you do more than is necessary and is not looking to pad jobs. When I wanted to do a project a certain way, they have either come up with a way to give me the effect I want or present options which would be more beneficial to me and my pocketbook. I truly appreciate that. The only negative I can possibly come up with is that it can take a bit of time to get an estimate, but that is so minor-considering I can procrastinate in making a decision. I also remember that when I had a problem closing one of the windows they installed after I was cleaning it, the owner showed up to make sure everything was OK and to help with the window - TWO YEARS after the job--- who does that? I am currently moving forward with another job and have no problem recommending this company.
Description of Work: A full siding job including tear-off, wrap and install. All windows replaced (23) and two windows moved and replaced with a bay window - which included a new cut-out, header and sheetrock, tape and spackle on the interior. Converted Garage door opening from two door to one big door with new header and prep to paint on the interior.

I signed the contract to have the work done and I did not hear from the company for about a month. I called to make sure they did not forget about me and was told that they are behind because of the weather (rainy days). Within a week, Gary Sr (the owner) showed up and explained to me that someone would be out in a day or two to measure and cut the gutters. Another crew would be out by the end of that week (depending on the weather) and install the gutters. It all went exactly as he said. They also fixed two shingles on my garage roof and attended to a small siding repair on the house. I was told if I had any problems to just call. I did encounter one small issue. I called and within the week someone showed and fixed the problem. Competitive also put a roof on my house about 9 years ago. Both times the crew was efficient and thorough in the cleanup. The owner is no nonsense and very easy to deal with.

The rear half of my roof was damaged last summer by a falling tree. That part of the roof was replaced by Cornerstone Renovations of Princeton, N.J. The cost was covered by insurance. After the front half of the roof was damaged by last winter's ice and snow, causing a leak, I asked Cornerstone to complete the job. Its price quotation was $6,000, which I thought was very high. This damage was not covered by insurance. I was willing to pay Cornerstone a premium, because I was very happy with its past performance. However, I called Competitive Aluminum, a widely used company in this area and recommended by a neighbor, for a second estimate. I dealt always with the owner, Gary Pupa, who proposed $4,820 to do everything that Cornerstone would have, as far as I could tell. He and his workers came when they said they would and did everything they said they would, without any prodding. I gave each worker $15 in cash -- a small tip. Of course, my rating of excellent in all categories needs to be tested by time -- i.e., whether I have any problems with the roof. The contract includes a 20-year no-leak guarantee. Gary Pupa's son and son-in-law seem to be involved in the business, offering continuity.
Description of Work: Five workers replaced the front half of my roof with Timberline 30-year shingles. First, they removed all old shingles and everything down to the wood; then they laid Weather Watch ice shield. They cleaned and secured existing gutters and leaders. Inside, they replaced a small area of insulation under the roof that had been damaged by a leak. They came at 7 a.m. and finished at 1:30 p.m., after cleaning up and removing all debris.

I contacted five companies for estimates for new gutters and downspouts on my home. Only four responded. Robert Bailey came out to do a proposal. Competitive is a family owed and run business and Gary Sr. and Gary Jr. were very responsive and hands on through the whole project. They did a great, fast job with the roof and a very good job with the siding and gutters. Their price was very competitive and they met or exceeded our expectations. We weren't living in the house at the time, so I cannot comment on how well their workers would interact with you if you were home, but I would and have recommended them to others.

Excellent, far beyond expectations! We have worked with many contractors over the years and even the good ones have left us feeling drained financially and emotionally. I was dreading having this work done and put if off for many years. However, I had no need to worry. With Competitive it was a completely different experience. Gary Puba, who owns the company, is a professional to the core. He is an excellent business man. Customer satisfaction is his primary goal and he insists that the work is up to a very high quality standard. I could not believe how great a job they did. They arrived on schedule. They stayed on the job. His crew spoke English. They used all the material they had specified in the quote. After the roofing job was finished, they did an excellent job cleaning up our yard. They did some extra work and did not charge us. They moved furniture before doing the windows and they cleaned everything up inside when they were done. There was a minor issue with some of the windows and Gary spotted it and had the manufacturer come out to fix it right away. One of the gutters was not lined up correctly and Gary came back to fix it, and called later to say if it was still not right to let him know (what other contractor would do this?) . We had not communicated clearly about the way the fan worked in the attic and so an override switch was not configured correctly - Gary had his electrician come out and fix it right away. Competitive is a family business and the whole family are a pleasure to work with. They use excellent sub-contractors too. I would recommend this company for any contracting job and we will use them again in a heart beat.
Description of Work: Competitive remodeled the front of our house, changing the roof design and the front wall of the home. They extended the roof and put new siding on the front. They removed the old roof and installed a new one. They installed new windows that were larger than existing. They replaced all our gutters and installed new ones, where needed. They investigated a potential existing problem with a bulge in our back wall and found nothing that we needed to be concerned about. (any other contractor would have told us we had major issues and changed us a fortune to fix it). They covered all wood trim with aluminum, replacing any rotten wood as they went along.

This is a large roof with many angles. The job was started and completed in two days. The cleanup was okay but there were a number of nails that were not picked up even after a magnet was used. I did not have any leaks in the roof before the job. After the job there was a leak around one of the chimneys. The company responded promptly, did a thorough job checking for the source of problem and resealed the suspected area. There has not been any further problems. The business owner, Gary, visited the site both days.
Description of Work: Completely strip home of all layers of existing roof shingles down to existing wood sheeting and cover with 15lb. roofing felt and shingle roof using Timberline 30 year shingles. I will divide the job into three sections. The siding, construction and the masonry. The siding job was excellent. The two man crew, Jaro and Slavek, were attentive to the smallest detail. I truly felt they worked on this job as if it was their own homes. There was a different crew for the construction of the shed roof and installation of the doors and windows. This crew could have been more careful. There were a couple of incidents when tools and building supplies were dropped and damaged the new pavers. Some damaged pavers were replaced. The masons are not part of this company but were brought in by Competitive to do the masonry portion of the job. The stone work is done very well. But, one of the two stoops was built a couple of inches too high causing the bottom of the door sweep to rub it. I wanted to reduce the height of the walkway in relation to the driveway. Instead there is now an increased difference in height because the foundation for the walkway was not dug deep enough.
Description of Work: Removed all existing siding. Installed Tyvek, 1/2" Dow Insulation and new siding. Installed new leaders and gutters. Built new shed roof over entranceway. Installed one new door, two storm doors and two replacement windows. Built two new stoops with limestone steps. Installed new paver walkways.

They were very reliable and very good. They were prompt as they came when they said they were going to. They had the lowest estimate of the places I contacted. I spoke with ten families that had used them previously and they all gave them a good recommendation. They cleaned up while they were doing the work and they came out again after the work was done to make sure it was cleaned up properly. They also hire their staff and keep them on all year long and keep them busy all year long.
Description of Work: Competitive Aluminum removed my old siding, down to the base. Then they put up tyvec, then insulation, then the vinyl siding. They did this on 3 sides of my house, which is about 3,400 square feet. They also did work on the gutters, putting liters from the vinyl siding. They also replaced about 25 rotted boards on my deck in the back of my house. They also did some minor repairs around the house while they were here that came here.
