about a year ago, I developed a leak in the roof of my house. I remembered my dad had used john asche contractors to install the roof years ago. i gave him a call and the next day he came and patched the roof up for free, even though i couldn't find the original contract. it held up for a year then leaked again, i called him back and he fixed it again . After hurricane irene, it leaked some more So I called him one more time and he came back . we found the original contract, and i was already way ,past the guarantee date, but john was so nice! He explained that the valley of the roof was the hardest place to pinpoint a leak because it can originate in one place and then trickle down into the valley and leak in another place. So, because we couldn't find the leak the first two times he offered to redo the entire valley of my roof free of charge! I was shocked ! He really did not have to do this but he said he stands behind the quality of his workmanship and he thought it was the right thing to do! So, three days later , his crew of roofers, including his son {it really is a family business} showed up at 8:00 am and proceeded to tear off the old shingles and install a whole new valley. By 2:00 pm, they were done, everything was cleaned up and my roof looked as good as new. It goes to show that there are still some nice and honest people left in this world! I'm so happy and grateful! when i need the rest of the roof replaced, I will definately call John Asche and I would recommend him to all of my friends! He and his crew were prompt, polite and courteous! He turned what could have been an awful experience into a pretty good one for me! They say sometimes God sends an angel......I guess John was mine!

I called prior to Hurricane Irene hitting the east coast. I made an appointment with John Asch for the Monday after the storm hit, August 29th. As a result of the storm he cancelled my appointment and moved it to Tuesday 8/30. On Tuesday he was supposed to be out to the house in the afternoon. He had to push it back again, this time to 7pm that night. At 7pm he called and said he wasn't sure if he could make it that night and asked if we could move to 8/31 in the morning. I told him I'd prefer today, we'd had more water come in from the storm, but he'd need to get up on the roof to assess the damage and give me a proper estimate so it was up to him. I was concerned about there being enough daylight to see things properly. He told me he'd be to the house in 30-45min. When he arrived I explained the situation and showed him the water damage in our upstairs bathroom. He gave me some advice about suing the previous contractor. He then went outside to look at the roof. Less than 5 minutes later he was ready to tell me what had to be done. I asked him about what he found on the roof. He said he didn't need to get on my roof. He said the roof didn't have enough of an angle and had to completly ripped up and replaced with a proper angle so the water would run off. He gave me an esitmate of $3000 and told me he'd have to come back another day in order to take measurements and pull permits etc. before he could give me a real figure. I thanked him for his time and didn't call him back. The major issues I have is that I asked him repeatedly about getting up on the roof to examine what the other contractor had done. There is a slight grade to the roof and a section that is flat. If he had gotten up on the roof as another contractor had he might have been able to provide me with a real idea of the problem. The advice he gave me about suing the previous contractor didn't ring true either. He said that while I could sue for three times what I had paid and that it would be good to talk to the BBB, I could not repair the roof until the case had been completed through small claims court and I had been granted an award. Some cases take over a year...I'm supposed to wait and allow more rain in my home and more damage to the structure of my home...? I've watched enough Judge Judy to know that's not right. I feel John Asch was interested in a large job, and mine wasn't, so he gave me a huge figure to keep me from bothering him again.
Description of Work: Last year my husband & I had our roof replaced. We were in a rush as our insurance company said they would drop us if we didn't address it within 30 days and we had a planned 10 day non-refundable vacation. We made several calls & got quotes, but mainly used those people you find in the Valpak & in the phone book. We picked a guy who was middle of the road, not the most expensive, not the cheapest & he was local. He told us being only a few towns away he knew the area & would be able to do a good job. He took about 1 week and was able to get it installed within the time frame we needed. This spring we started noticing leaks in our bathroom. We called this contractor out on four separate occasions to have him fix the leak. Needless to say every time it rained we'd cringe & wonder if we'd have more water coming through. Also at this time I was pregnant with our first child & not looking forward to bathing a newborn with dirty rain water dripping on him from the ceiling. We decided that we'd had enough of the back & forth & not actually being fixed by our previous contractor. So I signed up for Angie's list & called around for a new perspective on what was going on up on the roof.

I find it hard to believe there are so many ungrateful idiots in this world. Some one else did a bad job installing her roof. I have over 400 calls for roof repairs because of the hurricane. I am running around 15 hour days to try to help as many people as possible. As she said I even called to reschedual because of the bad weather rather then just not show up as a lot of contractors do. I even showed up at 7;45pm at night to help her out free of charge. I gave her free advice. If she dosen't like my advice that is her right. To contact angies list to complain about me coming for free at 7:45PM just after a hurricane when I am jammed up t help her, I find unreal. I guess I would get better rattings if I just didn't go??? He didn't respond to our call. We called again a week later and finally got an answer. Set up an appointment for noon, and told him I'd have my parents meet him at the house. He showed up 40 minutes early, and they weren't there yet. He called me and was angry there was no one at the house. I told him we agreed to noon but I'd call my parents to see when they'd be there. When they got there (they were actually 20 minutes early), he was gruff with them, wouldn't answer my dad's questions, said he couldn't help us after only 5 minutes, and stated and quot;I've got 12 more appointments to get to today.and quot; My dad told him, and quot;Then I guess you'd better leave.and quot;

After setting up an appointment, I called that day to see if was possible for me to meet some one one hour early. They said they would see if they could. I arrived at the house, met with his parents. Went inside the house on two different floors to look at there leak. I advised them it was nothing that my company could do. I deal with roofing, and they did not have a roofing problem. I spent my gas to drive a large truck there, used up my time for free to give them free advise and they are upset with me because they cant get instant gratification. A few people out there are ungrateful. JOHN..........

Excellent job all the way around. Appointments were kept, great care was taken with my roses which were all along one side of the house they protected them completely. They were neat, professional and the property was completely clean when they were done. I had one problem with the flashing on the chimney two years later one call they came out and addressed the issue, their were no complaints or discussions they simply came and made the necessary repairs. No problems since then. It was a pleasure to have a contractor keep their appointments, return calls and complete the work on-time and as promised. I would highly recommend this contractor.

Very professional. John Asch kept all appointments, arriving on time. Detailed estimate, the variable of permit expense was explained and added at the final bill. No deposit required, full payment (cash or check) after work completed. All work explained. Informative website. Work done ahead of estimated date of 7/1/2011. On the day of installation Mr. Asch called to made sure that there was protection under the skylight that was being removed. Installation started early morning, completed by mid afternoon. No problems, minimal debris inside from skylight replacement. It had been explained that they do not do any work inside, ie caulking of skylight, electrical wiring for attic fan, but that he could recommend a contracter if necessary. Overall very happy with the work done.

Very well. John was very knowledgeable on state/local building codes and advised our original builder had not used the proper amount of nails per shingle which was why our roof didn't last more than ten years. He was very helpful and obtained all the appropriate permits from our township and arranged the necessary inspections. He did not require payment until the inspections were completed and work was approved. His workers were always prompt, courteous, and cleaned up every stray nail and shingle when the work was done!
Description of Work: John had been patching our roof for several years after several bad storms. Finally, we had to replace the whole roof. He removed the old roof, installed needed vents our original builder never included and applied a new roof.

They were excellent. I had a problem with squirrels making holes in my house. The end of the Gutter Helmet had fallen off, and it had to be replaced. A handyman had repaired the Gutter Helmet. The crew of John Asch Contracting/Asch Roofing Specialists were very punctual unlike a lot of people. There were six people working round the clock for two days to fix the problem. They were very polite and very professional. All this happened in between a snowstorm, and it was freezing. I had them back in the spring to seal the end cap of the gutters so that it didn't leak. They charged per man per hour. They charged for supplies and labor. The main roofer was very knowledgeable compared to other roofers. He has been in the business forever and he really knows his stuff. I think he took over the business from his father. He knows things that a lot of roofers don't even mention. He also has a very pleasant personality. He was patient and he explained things to me. He got the work done when I needed it done. He was expensive, though. He gave me his cell phone number so that I could always reach him. The crew told me that the first roof was installed incorrectly and showed me how. They also told me how it should've been done and explained it. They were excellent. I would definitely recommend them.

Based on his Angie's list reviews, I called John Asch and asked him to submit a quote for my new roof. In May his quote was accepted and we were told that it would be about 3 weeks before he could perform the work as he needed time to get town permits, schedule crews, and order the necessary supplies. We agreed that the roof would be installed on June 22 - give or take. In July I called John Asch to find out where my roof was and he told me about some problems he was having with overcomitted crews and backlogs due to the very hot weather and rain. I requested a Saturday for the installation so I wouldn't have to take a day off from work, but was told that his crew wasn't working many weekends and he couldn't promise it. Okay, I'm a reasonable guy....stuff happens? I told him that my roof could wait another week or 2 while he worked through his backlog. Now it's the middle of August and I still don't have my new roof so I drop them an email. I was told by his office that they would be coming this week to do my work but no exact date yet, "He'll call on Sunday to let you know." Guess what, Sunday comes and goes without a peep..... Now here's the kicker: My neighbor spoke to a contractor last Tuesday and had his roof installed Saturday! Yes, a Saturday, with a 4 day wait and the same pricing I received from John Asch. His work was done neatly and, to the untrained eye, very competently. Don't I feel like a horse's a**? My wife, who never gets invloved with this kind of stuff, and barely knows what a roof is, told me she didn't want to use John Asch anymore so I'm calling my neighbor's roofers...... Thanks for nothing John Asch!

Was very fortunate that I received an estimate shortly after calling. We were past the estimated work date, so I called and very shortly received a response with a new date. Can't say enough about the 6 -7 man crew who worked in 95 degree weather for 2 and a half days. These young men worked continuously and left the entire area clean. They were great representatives of the type of worker John hires. We did have a snafu with the town requiring a higher priced shingle which bumped up the price, but John split the cost with us. There was also an issue with the dumpster (I have pavers) but again John resolved this to our and hopefully his satisfaction. I was concerned re: the skylight replacement because the brand John gurarantees was smaller than the existing skylight. He had one of his "skylight specialists" come in for that portion of the work and it looks great on the inside - I don't think I am going to need the interior work that I was expecting. Unfortunately we haven't had any rain, so I don't know if anything leaks, but am optimistic that it won't. Would definitely recommend the company.

Called John Asch Contracting, Inc for an estimate to repair my porch roof which was leaking. Initial contact was positive. He came out, explained what needed to be done, gave me a clear cut estimate, and said to call with questions, etc. This was around the second week of April 2010. After reviewing the paperwork, I called back and left a message that I would like to hire the company, and sign a contract. I received a call back from someone different who thought I needed an estimate. I explained I have already had the estimate, am ready to hire the company to complete the work. This person came to my house the next to give me an estimate! I explained again that I already had an estimate would like to sign a contract, which of course he did not have. The original person, John, called me and apologized, stating there was a misunderstanding with his salesperson. I told him not a problem, set up a date and time to meet to sign the contract. Signed contract on April 26,2010, work to begin approximately on May 21, 2010, work would take less then one day. May 21 arrived, no one showed up. I called the company, left a message on May 21. Received a call back on May 25, they left a message that they would be at my home at the end of the week or early the next week. Well now it is June 14, needless to say no one has showed up or called. I am employed as a home care IV nurse, I understand about things not going as anticipated, taking more time, traffic, or difficulty reaching clients. I also understand it is the busiest time of year for contractors. But it does not excuse a company for not at least calling to reschedule or even just touch base. I am very disappointed, as the company came highly rated, and I thought I could get my leaking roof repaired so I could move on with other projects.

I sought out John Asch Roofing because of their good reviews here on Angie's List. I met with their sales representative/estimator on Apr 3rd. He agreed to provide me a quotation by mail by the end of the following week (Apr 9th). After not receiving a quote, I called their representative the following Monday, Apr 12th. He told me he had mailed it and was surprised that I had not received it. I questioned what address it had been sent to (remembering that he had initially miswritten my home address for his visit on Apr 3rd) and he was not sure. I provided him with my FAX number and he told me that he would have it sent that evening (Apr 12) or the next morning (Apr13th). By the end of Apr 13th after not receiving a FAX, I again called their representative. He explained that he had not got back to the office to send it, but would do so that evening. That evening, I e-mailed Mr. Asch the owner of the company to explain what had happened so he was aware how his company was being represented and to see if he could assist in resolving the matter. He wrote a sincere note explaining how his company was successful, did good quality work and was growing at a rapid rate (more work opportunities coming in than they can efficiently service), and was sorry that I could not use his service and he wished me luck. I immediately e-mailed him back to clarify that I was just interested in making him aware of my dissatisfaction with how he was being represented but would still welcome a quote ASAP. I have not heard back nor did I ever receive a quote. They may indeed be a fabulous roofer, but they did not provide me a quote as promised. I was reasonable and proactive customer, in that I followed up twice with the sales representative (phone) and twice with the owner (e-mail). All of the other roofing companies I met with seeking quotations, showed up on time, provided timely, detailed estimates and follow-up. It is my impression that John Asch Roofing are trying to manage as best they can through a growth mode (which may reflect the good quality of their work?) but are unreliable in providing a quotation. This is something to consider when deciding to ask them to bid or execute a job.

John Asch Contracting Receives approximately 20 to 30 calls every day. After the 70 MPH storm we had in March that changed to approx. 80 to 100 calls per day. We are not able to handle that many calls nor do I want to. When that many calls come in we do the best we can working 16 hour days. Some times we miss some people or a few leads fall between the cracks. If we can't get you a price in time, get over it & just call some one else. We do the best work of any roofers out there with the clients we sign contracts with. I never said I can take on all the roofing jobs in NJ. JOHN ASCH.......

Pretty straight forward job and relatively cheap compared to other estimate I got. The 2 man worker crew was pretty thorough and appeared to spend some extra time making sure they covered all the problem areas so I fell pretty confident that the problem is solved. They seemed knowledgable and pointed out some other areas on the siding that I need to keep my eye on and I appreciated that. My only concern was that all they did was tar and caulk the area around the old metal flashing instead of removing shingles, wrapping with waterproof fiber and upgrading the flashing like the other company who i got an estimate from said needed to be done, but I guess you get what you pay for and who know's who was really right. It's only been a couple of weeks since the repair and only rained lightly once so I can't really speak to the long-term quality, but the leak appears to be fixed for now. I would use them again if the repair stands up over time.

It was a very bad experience and if I were the owner of that company, I would take serious issue with anyone who worked for me and gave customers that treatment.
Description of Work: There was no service performed because I never got an estimate. The first issue that caused me pause was that the company representative was very rude on the phone when I spoke to him to schedule an estimate appointment. When he arrived at my property, I had my wife greet him because I was caught in a phone call that I could not break away from. At that point, he was very rude to my wife and just walked away. I never heard from him again and didn't want to due to his very unprofessional manner. I had several other contractors visit and give estimates and in every case, the estimate meeting took at least 40 minutes with some of them getting started by taking measurements etc. while I just hovered around them. Surely, if it is going to take 40+ minutes to get information from my house and he knows he is at the right place since my wife confirmed that with him, a few minute delay in me meeting him should not have made a huge issue. I would not recommend these guys to anyone!

I go out on approximately 6 estimates daily. As always I made an exact appointment. I even called ahead about 15 minutes before I got there to confirm. I arrived right on time. I was greeted at the door & was told to wait there. After about 10 minutes of waiting, with no one showing up, I left. I wasted about 90 minutes of my time going to there house. 95 % of my clients are great. Every once in a while you get a turkey.

Very well. The company returned phone calls and showed up for estimates when they said they would. The day of actual work was very close to the estimated date and the team showed up on that day on time to do the work. The new roof looks nice and the workmanship seems to be excellent. We had one small glitch that the owner expeditiously addressed, so we were very happy about the "customer service" component of this project. The owner also connected us with another home repair company who we had a very positive experience with.

Our home was built in 1897 ad most repairs are complicated and are filled with problems. We located three (3) contractors through Angie’s and two (2) from friends. We received estimates from all five (5). John Asch was the lowest bid and we had excellent reports from other’s who he had done work for. Mr. Asch was professional and on time for all appointments. More importantly, he was on time for the start of the job and the completion of the job. Mr. Asch’s estimate was well written and well explained – it also covered any contingencies. There were some problems on the job, that were not expected, but Mr. Asch explained them clearly and what our options were. We were very happy with the quality of the work and the value we received.

John came out and gave me an estimate to seal the area where the chimney met the roof. This cost $450 and they used a material covered with tar. Before they did this, we had water coming in around the flashing which was never done correctly. I had other estimates in the thousands where they wanted to rip up the surrounding roof (only 10 years old). Since having this done, we have had plenty of rainstorms, but no more leaks. We were finally able to finish our attic. Also it looks better than before. The worker also put a new roof on a small shed where we supplied the material. Labor cost was $200 and was a very professional job. This company saved me money and did a great job. Overall it took 1/2 a day.

The owner has been responsive, but I think the job could have been better. When they pulled up the old roof, they damaged the siding and they did not repair it.

Response from JOHN ASCH CONTRACTING INC. / ASCHROOFING.COM
On approx. Feb. 2009, My company did a roof for this member, located in Franklin Park, NJ. The contract called for removing two layers of roofing. The old roofing had latex caulking adhered to the edge of the roof & the siding above the roof. We put back one layer of roofing & never use caulk on top of a new roof. Manufacturer of roofing materials does not call for caulk along siding, ever. Upon completion of the job, our one layer of new roofing is lower then the previous two layers & caulk. So now for the first time in many years the bottom edge of the siding is exposed. It is no longer hidden behind the old roof & caulk. This siding is the brittle type. 2 foot wide pieces similar to asbestos siding. It has many small bits missing & cracked. Where the siding is missing or irregular you now can see the aluminum step flashing for the first time. The home owner is upset that it shows. He wants it not to show. I said to him no problem. He would have to hire my company or another company to remove the siding, buy new product, cut & install it lower to sit fully right down to the roof. Then paint it all to match. Or he can also do it himself. He doesn't like that idea. He says it is my problem & wants it fixed for free.( I am enclosing a copy of the contract & photos.) I was never hired to do siding work. Nor does it come up in the contract job description. In the 55 years we have been doing roofing, this is the first time a homeowner asked for free siding repairs after doing a roof. I invite any person to look closely at our roof job. It is perfect as always. Nothing is missing. It does not leak. JOHN..........
