The only conclusion to our story is that we have terminated our relationship with Gold Medal.
Description of Work: We had a contract with Gold Medal. Instead of one comprehensive inspection as promised, we had countless appointments made and re-made over the course of several weeks. The AC technician changed the filter on our AC unit (a high end filter). He charged us $800.00--a discount as a member!--and said it would last for 2 years. Our previous provider charged $350.00; research revealed that the the manufacturer of the filter recommends filter change every year. Our complaint has been unresolved after months even though we were promised a resolution within 48 hours.

This company, if smaller, could make a pretty good living on just collecting the service charge of $49.00. They quoted me $475.00 to install a new toilet (this is just the install, toilet not included), but member pricing is $400.00 for the install, which they offered automatically, even though I am not a member. I believe the cheapest price with them supplying a toilet was close to $900.00. They also wanted to charge me almost 91.00 to replace the inline water shut off valve for the toilet. (I haven't bought a valve in a long time but one this small should go for $10.00 - $15.00 ). The service charge is refunded to you as long as you give them a deposit. Unless you are buying the toilet from them or ordering something special, why give them a deposit? If you get smart, and start calling around you will find that the going rate for this job is $175.00 - $225.00. Once you realize that you are being charged a tad too much by Gold Medal, and cancel their appointment, you're not getting the $49.00 back anyway, so don;t give them anything else, unless you like to hire a company that seems to double everyone else's fee. Keep in mind that all of these quotes do not include any other work other than what is stated above. If the floor flange needs to be worked on there will be extra charges from anyone performing the work, Gold Medal included. They write on their quote extra charges but do not give even a ball park figure. In fairness, there was not a problem getting any deposit money back, although they will not refund the $49.00 service charge. Lesson to be learned is call a few other places first, and then if you don't mind blowing $49.00, call Gold Medal last. Their quote will indeed be jaw dropping, as another person described it.
Description of Work: Had a "technician" come to give an estimate on installing a new toilet (they do not quote over the phone). They charge $49.00 to come and give an estimate.

We contacted them by the end of the year and they promised they would have it done for us before Christmas. It didn't get done until after New Years. They came out a few times and they kept forgetting equipment and didn't ever arrange specific inspection times. It got to the point that they were taking so long my fiancé had to eventually help the guy finish the work. We would not use them again and would not recommend them either. We are now having to get more work done that they didn't do correctly the first time.
Description of Work: They switched out our hot water heater and ran gas to our dryer and stove.

It was terrible. They told me 1 day they were going to show up they didn't. It took them 2 weeks to fix it Then they order the wrong parts that we needed. It was a nighmare. They send me a gift basket big deal. We will never work with them again.
Description of Work: We had a major problem with the electric. It fried everything in the house. So we needed new air and a new furance.

It went very well. They were very professional and were able to come out within 24 hours on a weekend. They even called back a few days later to make sure that everything had gone well. They have a price list and showed it to me. I like that everything is pre-priced and that they aren't just making it up as they go. I would use them again in a heartbeat.

They have done a lot for me. They are very good.
Description of Work: I used them to do electrical, heating and plumbing work. They have replaced the sumps, air conditioner, and water heater and have put a completely new electrical service. The last time they put in a disposal in the kitchen.

They are a big chain and I wasn't too happy with them. They didn't seem very professional. It seemed like they just recruited high school kids to come and be plumbers. They did help me identify the problem with the sewer line, but I wouldn't hire them to fix it because I wasn't too impressed with the workers they sent out. They did show pretty good responsiveness to my calls and needs and they were also punctual. I wouldn't use them again because the people they sent out seemed more like handy men instead of licensed plumbers.
Description of Work: Gold Medal replaced a vent pipe and did a camera inspection of my sewer line.

Excellent. The technician was very professional, caught a number of issues with my heating system that would have been very problematic had they not been fixed, and fixed everything quickly and carefully.
Description of Work: Furnace inspection, replaced humidifier pad and stabilized loose humidifier unit thereby fixing a serious leaking problem, rewired humidifier which had been incorrectly wired on installation, replaced thermostat, installed Wags valve on hot water heater.

Onsite contractor was great, customer service at the home office great, price is horrifically expensive. Were it not an emergency, I would have declined the service.
Description of Work: Valve off of cold water pipe that fed the refrigerator icemaker broke and needed replacing. Had to shut off the water main to the house.

see above. DON'T HIRE THESE PEOPLE. they pressure you very hard. They wanted $15,000 for a job that two other contractors would do for $5000
Description of Work: Emergency sewer backing up. The Services made the problem worse. Price was three times what another contractor charged us. Heavily advertised, but not good at all. We also have another friend who had problems with this company, but we didn't know that til after we worked with them. We refused to hire them for any further and called another plumber, who charged us 1/3 the price

I had a leak in the basement. Told the company that I had to go to work. They showed up on time. I have dealt with plumbers before but this was way out of line. I had to take the day off from work because it took so long. Then they goat you with some kind of membership in their service agreement club. If you don't sign up, you pay even more!

One of the few companies that came out for us. They were excellent. They were very responsive and very good.

The problem that I called them about turned out not to be a problem. He suggested that i replace some pipes to the washer as a preventive measue. Later my faucet sprang a leak, and he replaced a whole thing. Now, my upstairs master bathroom does not have cold water, so i can't take a shower- its to hot. I think the prices were overcharged, and the work was overdone, and everytime they leave I have a new problem.

I asked for someone to come the same day since I had rearranged my schedule to be available. They said, well, okay. Actually Patty could come. She did. And looked around like it was her first time looking at an addition fully framed and ready for all the mechanical work to get done. She was carrying two enormous bags and a fancy clipboard, but didn't write a single note or provide me anything to read. She left her card with me. Now I know she's a "Comfort Specialist" -- Wow! And since then; nothing. No call. No letter. No email. The only reason I didn't give them an "F" is that they may still actually reappear. Who knows? If you need a contractor for Plumbing, Heating, AC or Electric work. Look elsewhere. These guys are too busy with their existing customers to worry about getting new ones.
Description of Work: Called Gold Medal to arrange an estimate and was immediately scheduled for two days later. Called the company the morning of the appointment to confirm. Was told, "Oh Sorry. We saw the appointment but our office people have to call you to verify information. I (the person with whom I spoke) was supposed to do that earlier this morning, but now that you are calling; it seems you really do want an estimate. So; the soonest we can come out is in two days."

He provided an estimate nut then realized that the existing appliances were on a 20 amp circuit and the new ones required a 40 amp circuit. He quoted the added work and I agreed and he began to install. He ran out of time and we agreed that he would return on Sunday afternoon. On Sunday afternoon two technicians arrived and completed the job. The total time was about 15 man hours. Their pricing was high in my opinion, but the work was very good and the service I received was terrific.

I told them to go ahead (what choice did I have) and book me for the $135.00. This was, of course, after vehemently trying to get me to sign up for the club for every other piece of equipment I have in the house. They fixed the issue, which was pressure in the lines, but not without more selling than when I bought my last car. They gave me estimates to replace most of everything except the furnace as well...more selling! When they left, I found stickers on my HVAC unit, and my electrical box, even though they didn't touch the electrical. The next day, I got a call from them asking how the service was, and oh yeah, did I want to join the club for the rest of the appliances. I want service and not sales, so I don't think I'll be calling them again. I got a service contract with PSEand G, and now I don't have to think about it anymore. No Gold Medal, I won't be needing your club anymore.

I requested the work on Friday, they made sure they had all the parts required and arrived Sat morning at 8 AM as planned. Over the course of the day, multiple employees appeared to either bring parts or to complete their section of the work. The furnace was up and running by 7 pm. Overnight we ran into one problem. My townhouse has two zone of heating. The upstairs reached 85 degrees while downstairs remained in the 65 degree range. They returned the next day and resolved the issue. Turned out to be minor, the thermostat wires for up and down were reversed. Overall, the company was punctual and very professional.
