I called up asking for a rough order of magnitude for fitting a shower valve in an open wall. They absolutely refused saying some people would do that to get a foot in the door and then would charge more. Gold Medal charge $29 to come and give an estimate. I reluctantly agreed as I couldn't get anyone else on the phone at the time. When they came, the guy looked at the valve and the open wall and asked the make of the valve. As we walked down from the bathroom he looked at all the other plumbing in my house asking if I wanted any of that done. He then turned on his tablet, scrolled through a list of prices and said and quot;install a customer provided shower valve, that's a P209, so $941 + Taxand quot; He admitted this was at most 1 hour and 30 minutes work. so he effectively wanted $600+ per hour. He then offered me 20% off. I refused so he offered to change my main water shut-off valve too in the same price. (apparently replacing the most central piece of my plumbing, plus getting town permits and getting inspections to ensure they comply with local codes could all be thrown in for free while they soldered a couple of bathroom joints for me. Then when I refused that he wouldn't tell me the details for the check (for the $29), he called his manager to tell him that I was refusing. In the end they offered $500 but that kind of business practice stinks of total rip-off. Starting stupidly high, then offering discounts and extra work all to try and pressure sell, then using the old and quot;i'll call my managerand quot; trick, even after i'd asked him to leave I will never accept paying someone for a quote again. Its a total and quot;foot in the doorand quot; technique.

Beware of Gold Medal. I personally believe they rake advantage of Senior citizens. Quoted a price of $650 to replace a sump pump. I found another local plumber who received a very high customer satisfaction rating on Angies List and he did the job for $300 less! I also received a sump pump with a much long warranty period.

I CAME HOME ON A FRIDAY EVENING TO FIND SEVERAL INCHES OF WATER COVERING THE FLOOR OF MY TOWNHOUSE. THE WATER WAS COMING FROM A LEAKING EXPANSION TANK ON MY HOT WATER HEATER. IT WAS STREAMING OUT UNDER PRESSURE AND HAD DRENCHED THE WALLS AND CEILING IN MY UTILITY ROOM. IT ALSO DRENCHED MY HVAC SYSTEM AND ALL ITS ELECTRONICS. I TURNED OFF MY MAIN WATER SUPPLY AND THE CIRCUIT BREAKERS FOR MY UTILITY ROOM. I CALLED GOLD MEDAL AND ASKED FOR HELP. THE OPERATOR TOLD ME SHE'D REPORT IT IMMEDIATELY AND A SERVICE PERSON WOULD CALL ME ASAP. SO I GOT OUT MY WET/DRY VAC AND TRIED TO CLEAN UP. IN LESS THAN 10 MINUTES (REAL TIME/NO EXAGGERATION) A SUPERVISORY TECHNICIAN WHO WAS ON THE ROAD IN MY AREA TELEPHONED FOR THE DETAILS OF THE LEAK AND TO TELL ME HE WAS ON HIS WAY. I ASKED IF HE HAPPENED TO HAVE AN EXTRA WET/DRY VACUUM BECAUSE THE JOB WAS OVERWHELMING MINE AND I EXPLAINED HOW DEEP THE WATER WAS AND HOW MUCH DAMAGE IT WAS CAUSING. HE ASKED ME IF HE COULD CALL IN REINFORCEMENTS ON MY BEHALF AND I VERY GRATEFULLY AGREED. HE PULLED INTO MY DRIVEWAY APPROX 25 MINUTES AFTER MY INITIAL CALL AND THE GOLD MEDAL WATER REMEDIATION SPECIALIST AND HIS ASSISTANT PULLED IN 5 MINUTES BEHIND HIM. THEY WERE AMAZING! WHILE THE PLUMBING REPAIRS WERE BEING ADDRESSED, THE FLOOD CLEANUP BEGAN. THEY PICKED UP AND MOVED EVERYTHING AS THEY PUMPED UP WATER. THEY SAVED MY FURNITURE. THEY REMOVED THE CARPET AND PADDING IN MY FAMILY ROOM (TOTAL LOSS) BUT SAVED MY GOOD WOOL RUGS. THEY SET UP ENORMOUS DRYER FANS AND DEHUMIDIFIER EQUIPMENT. THEY DID MOLD PREVENTION. THEY KEPT ME CALM. AND THEY HANDLED THE INSURANCE COMPANY TO BE SURE I GOT MAXIMUM CLAIM COVERAGE. THE DRYING EQUIPMENT STAYED IN PLACE FOR A WEEK AND SOMEONE CAME TO CHECK ON THE PROGRESS REGULARLY. GOLD MEDAL FOLLOWED UP WITH A THOROUGH SAFETY CHECK AND MAINTENANCE/CLEANING OF MY HVAC SYSTEM TO ENSURE ANY POSSIBLE ISSUES WOULD BE ADDRESSED AND ADDED TO THE INSURANCE CLAIM. WHEN IT WAS ALL OVER, MY HARDWOOD FLOORS AND KITCHEN TILE HAD TO BE REPLACED. WITHOUT THAT WATER CLEANUP TEAM, IT WOULD HAVE BEEN MUCH WORSE. THEY WORKED SO FAST AND THE PLUMBING SPECIALIST STAYED AND WORKED WITH THEM WHEN HE FINISHED WITH THE LEAK. I'LL SAY IT AGAIN, THEY WERE AMAZING.

IN EARLY SEPT 2013, I HAD A LEAK IN MY HOT WATER HEATER'S EXPANSION TANK THAT CAUSED A FLOODING DISASTER WITH A LOT OF DAMAGE. THE LEAK DEVELOPED FROM A VERY HARD WATER PROBLEM AND THE TECHNICIAN FROM GOLD MEDAL RECOMMENDED A WATER CONDITIONER. HE TOLD ME ABOUT THE SYSTEM AND I CHECKED IT OUT BEFORE I DECIDED TO and quot;GO FOR ITand quot;. IT WAS EVERYTHING HE DESCRIBED AND MORE. IT WAS INSTALLED ON-TIME AND, AS ALWAYS WITH GOLD MEDAL, THE WORK WAS DONE PERFECTLY. THEY RESPECT THE HOMEOWNER AND THE HOME - CLEAN, EFFICIENT, PROFESSIONAL. HE TOOK THE TIME TO SHOW ME EVRYTHING ABOUT THE SYSTEM AND HOW TO USE AND MAINTAIN IT AND ANSWERED ALL MY QUESTIONS. I'VE USED GOLD MEDAL BEFORE AND WILL CONTINUE TO USE THEM.

They replace my oil burner and A/C with new ones from Lenox as part of an oil to gas conversion, remove and install new Reheem water heater. The work include running new vent and exhaust pipes for the new furnace and water heater to outsite of the house. The install crews were very friendly and knowledgable about what they did. They did everything professionally and clean the site every day after they left. They explained to me in details everything they did and answered all my questions. My only compaint was for their project management. Given the nature of the work, they need to coordinate with my gas company to have them come over and install the gas meter (the gas line has been run from the street to my house). It looked like they did not schedule it ahead of time until the install guys showed up at my house and I asked them about the gas meter. Those guys had to call their office and ask the office to schedule with gas company. As a result we ended up with having no heat for 4 days. They gave us 2 space heater for our use during those time though. But it was freezing downstair where we had open floor plan and the space heater is simply not powerful enough to heat up the whole area.

The company arrived on time and performed the needed work. That was not issue at all. THE ISSUE IS PRICE. They have a book and everything is charged and quot;per the bookand quot;, so something that might reasonably cost $50 because it takes 15 minutes and no parts will be charged at $150 because that is what and quot;the bookand quot; says. Where it gets crazy is where and quot;the bookand quot; takes 3 15 minute items (45 minutes total) and charges them as if they are three separate calls at $150 each, so $150 of work becomes $450 and quot;by the bookand quot;. BUYER BEWARE.

Did the job professionally but for a ridiculously high price. Replaced an ordinary 40 gallon gas water heater. Wanted $500 for a valve insertion--when I declined, the price suddenly went down to $50. This was done on a weekend. I should have waited until Monday. Ordinary price for water heater replacement should be around $900.

Gold Medal did respond quickly and scheduled an appointment that accommodated my schedule. The electrician arrived, looked at the job, gave his standardized estimate, performed the work and was gone all under an hour. I felt $400 was very high for the quick job, but I wasn't having any luck getting other electricians to return my calls.

I had an appointment for a quote with their rep on Monday and right before the guy showed up, my heating went out. Despite being the day before the major snow storm, he was able to quote, measure, order, and get guys in the door by 9am the next day. I was amazed at how quickly they were able to get my job in. They considered it an emergency and they handled it well. The installers were very friendly and informative. I was so grateful for them to come out and spend 11 hours in my home, during a horrible storm, installing everything I needed. When they went out for lunch, they even offered to get me something since it was snowing really bad. Everything is working fantastically and I couldn't be happier.

While having my porch rebuilt, I hired Gold Medal to add a pendant light to the existing 2 side lights. They did the work at a reasonable rate and I thought all was well. From the start, I found the light bulbs were constantly burning out. Over time, I blamed it on the cold weather, hot weather, wind, old bulbs, etc. This year I decided to put LED bulbs in as they last a very long time. Doing so revealed the reason the incandescent bulbs had been burning out...there has always been a constant flow of current to the lights! How do I know this? The new LED bulbs are ALWAYS illuminated! Apparently there wasn't enough current flowing to illuminate the incandescent bulbs but since LEDs require little current, it's just enough. I explained the issue to a Gold Medal representative at the MAC Events Home Show who apologized and suggested I contact the office to have them resolve the issue they created. When I called the office, I was put on hold at least 5 times before I finally spoke to a representative. I explained the issue in detail and he replied I had no proof that this was caused by their inferior work. He said they could come out to resolve the problem but I would be charged a trip charge as well as a charge for the work...no discount, no allowance. I declined to have them provide the service since I hired them once; they didn't do the job correctly, and in the end cost me more money by paying for the current used over time and a slew of light bulbs. In the end the representative was apologetic giving the feeling this happens more often than one thinks. I just wish LED bulbs were available when the work was still under warranty; it would have saved me a lot of money and aggravation!

When I asked for a written estimate all he would give was an approximation of $7000 give or take. Would not put the estimate in writing. Needed warranty (4 years) repair of kitchen faucet originally installed on 6/7/11. Plumber showed up approximately 2 hours late, was extremely rude, wouldn't talk to me except to tell me that the water was very hard in my town and and quot; we won't honor your warranty anymore.and quot; He walked out without saying anything and never explained why he was late. They were terrible. They showed up six hours late on the first day for the estimate. They doubled the price the work. They did not show up on the day they were supposed to. When the first tech came out, he said that the ceiling needed to come down and immediately started tearing it down without speaking with us first. We said we would not be able to pay upfront and they offered a credit program with no interest. When the tech did not show up the next day I called and cancelled the contract. They still put the credit through so we got a call from the bank. I had to tell the bank that the work was never done. It was a very frustrating situation throughout.

Called and spoke to several companies. Get the same response: and quot;We have no idea how much it costs. We are just a call center.and quot; Gave up and chose Gold Medal because, quite frankly, no one seemed particularly satisfactory. However, when I spoke to the scheduler I said, and quot;If someone shows up and tries to ask $500 then they are wasting their time.and quot; She responds, and quot;Well, you don't have to do the service, just pay the service fee of $50.and quot; I said, and quot;I will not pay $50 for a service call to clean out a mainline because I am asking precisely for that service and you are not providing me any type of range or estimated cost. However, if someone shows up and asks for $500 to do that they are wasting their time.and quot; She said, and quot;Well, sir, I'll be honest with you, it shouldn't cost more than $300and quot; So, the drain cleaner guy shows up and says, and quot;Hmmm, you need a Level II cleanout because the cleanout is in the basement.and quot; He had also cleaned some gunk out the trap ahead of it before giving this fixed price offer. I said, and quot;Yes, that's what I told the scheduler already. How much does that cost?and quot; He shows me his little tablet: $500! I couldn't believe it (not really)! I then tell him he's welcome to leave and I won't be paying any service fee. and quot;Well...how much would you pay?and quot; and quot;Ok. fine. $200,and quot; says I. He pulls out his tablet and lo and behold there is Level 1 cleaning for $200. How surprised I was! Not really. and quot;I will have to call my boss, and quot; he says, then goes upstairs. A moment later I follow him and the contract is already made out. No phone call was made. Duh. Basically, they have this whole thing figured out. The best part comes next. So the guy cleans out my pipe, then tells me that the video camera guy is coming to inspect the job and tell me if I can get a warranty on the service that was just performed. I asked why I wasn't told since that is kind of rude not to ask me. No real answer is given and, honestly, I was interested to see what happens and see my pipes in HD. A really nice gentlemen comes by that doesn't really react when I tell him that I have other appointments. This strikes me odd until I realize that he is the real closer. The guy running the snake is just the guy running the snake. This guy is the real sales guy. He runs the camera snake down and you get to watch in HD. First its iron pipe, then ceramic, then PVC. Between the ceramic joints are roots (this is very normal for a 100 year old house). This is what I had told the scheduler and the Snaker. We get to the last ceramic pipe segment and there is a curtain of roots with two little holes drilled through them, supposedly from the Snaker. and quot; What is that?,and quot; I asked. and quot;Well, the snake only pokes holes in them. They can't clean them completely.and quot; and quot; You're kidding me right? The guy didn't do his job.and quot; and quot; No, the snake cannot clean that out.and quot; and quot; That's ridiculous. Why not?and quot; and quot;Because of the pipe and how the blade is made on the snake. It would damage the pipes.and quot; At that point I laughed and I got pretty angry with this guy. His statement is almost entirely untrue. Quite frankly, he knew the guy hadn't done the job correctly. He also knew that there are a number of knives available to add to the end of a snake to clean those pipes, mainly because I told him that I knew. But I mainly got angry because I cannot image what would have happened to my mom. This company would have happily charged my mom $500 and then told her she needs a new sewer line liner, probably for another $2000, then probably new pipes to all the bathrooms. and quot; So, if I had spent $500 would I get the warranty?and quot; and quot; No, not with those pipes. They need to be replaced.and quot; and quot; No, they don't really, but you guys didn't do your job correctly.and quot; The guy kept on insisting that they did but I kept on pointing out the curtain of roots with two little holes punched in it. He refused to admit that the Snaker could have cleaned at least *most* of the root curtain away by using the knives that come with any rental unit from the home store, which he did not use or even attempt to use. Finally I said to him, and quot;Get out.and quot; and so he left. Here's the list of what you need to know to not be ripped off and gt; Assume all of these companies are out to get your money no matter what and gt; No matter how much you want to have faith in the guy that shows up, do not. He or she will lie to you and tell you that he or she and quot;just works thereand quot; to get your sympathy and gt; If they cannot give you an overall range estimate over the phone then do not use them. I said it would be fine if they said $5 to$1000, but they would not give me anything over the phone. and gt; Ask them if they send a video snake afterwards and why would they send it after and not before? You usually get xrays before surgery, right? and gt; Ask them if they have pictures of what a successful drain cleaning looks like. I am sure this is hard for them since there are so many different situations, but they also need to be reasonable. The video snake should have lots of pictures of successful before and after shots for comparison, shouldn't they? and gt; Be prepared to tell them to leave. They are in your house already and want to make money. Make them a REASONABLE offer. If they don't like it you tell them to leave. and gt; Do not let these companies bully you and gt; Get a second and third opinion. Do not get only two (and not from all the big chains) and gt; Most of the time, if don't see any cracks in the pipes you are ok and gt; If you see some roots you may need to clean in out every 8-12 months depending on how aggressive they are. and gt; This is cheaper than replacing the line for thousands of dollars and they know this. and gt; Oh - they do NOT clean up for you. So, if you think it's Ok to spend $500 just remember that you will be cleaning up your own mess. They will only clean up their's. Hope this helps you and especially our parents from another generation who expect people in the service industry to behave morally, honorably and honestly.

Responsiveness, courtesy and abilities to the task were completely professional. Fire occurred in a junction box behind a kitchen drawer between a wall oven and a counter range top. Lines were melted and they assisted in determination of functionality for insurance claim purposes. The subsequently tested lines to the main breaker panel to certify lines were working and in good order and up to code. They have provided many coupons and offers for discounts on services but investigation has let me to believe that they are significantly overpriced. However I have no complaints about the work, quality of work, or the professionalism of the individual technicians.

my air conditioner broke. the tech rep indicated he couldn't fix my air conditioning unit, but his sales rep could offer many options to provide solutions. the sales rep showed up later that same day, and took extensive measurements. both the tech rep and the sales rep preferred a high pressure sales approach and continually tried to sell me a new furnace in addition to an air conditioner. the pricing was extremely high. I was given 3 options for a replacement air conditioner, rather than any option for the broken part, I settled on the middle one, and requested next day installation. the sales rep call his office to confirm next morning deliver and installation. to their credit the installers showed on time. however, they had an air conditioner that wouldn't fit in the space, or, was compatible with my furnace. the correct parts would need to be specially ordered and a final installation date was unknown. as I shared my displeasure, I finally received another option to fix the part that was broken...but at a extremely high price. overall, a very disappointing episode. their service is unprofessional, and very expensive.

My Mom was coming home on hospice care, and we needed to upgrade the outlets in the living room in order to accommodate the hospital bed and oxygen machines (this needed to be done ASAP, as the hospice equipment was being delivered on Monday. Also checked kitchen outlet as red-button would pop out unexpectedly on occasion (he checked it and said that he fixed something with the default, so that it would not disengage the Life Alert machine and the telephone). He also check the dining room outlet, as sparks reportedly were visible when plugging in Mom's nebulizer machine (for her breathing treatment).
Description of Work: Upgraded 2 2-prong outlets to 2 3-prong outlets; checked kitchen and also also dining room outlet.
