UPDATE: Almost 3 years later my driveway is sinking; the exact reason I wanted a deeper gravel bed installed as quoted. Gully's and ruts have formed where water collects. Not happy and no response from Garden State: ORIGINAL: I hired Sonny at Garden State Paving in August of last year because during pre-sales consultations he seemed genuine and thorough. I told him that I was disappointed that my current driveway had sagged and had ruts from tires, etc. I wanted EVERYTHING taken away, I wanted a new crushed stone base of sufficient depth and then a solid 3" of asphalt. He assured me that he would do just that. He also gave me a price to do some additional paver work for my garbage cans on the side of my garage. He gave me a reasonable quote for the driveway and separate add on price for the paver work. When I called him to tell him he had the job, he stopped by again to confirm the work and he told me that he really didn't want to do the paver work. First clue, something wasn't right. Then, the day the work was scheduled, he showed up with his crew, removed the current blacktop and did not remove the existing crushed stone as discussed. Second clue. It was fine he declared. He said he measured it and it was plenty. He used his roller machine to compact it more. Then the asphalt arrived and they began lay the asphalt. All looked to be going well, but towards the end of the job, I pointed out that the side lines of the driveway were not as wide as the original driveway. They were actually curved inwards toward the middle of the driveway while wider at the garage and at the curb. He tried to explain that he was just following the straight lines he followed (which were not straight) were accurate and that my previous driveway was incorrect. When it was all done it looked ridiculous. I have pictures but can't figure out how to post them. Sonny suggested the he bring back fresh soil to fill in the gaps where there was a difference between where the old driveway wa and the new. So he did that. It looked even sillier. He left and my neighbors came over to find out who did the driveway so that they WOULDN'T use him! My wife came home and had a fit. So I called Sonny and told him that the job was unacceptable. He said he'd come the next day with more asphalt (evidently they made all these excuses because they didn't order enough to be delivered on the first try). Next day he showed up as promised, with leftover asphalt from another job and swept away the fill dirt he had put in the gaps and added more asphalt to my driveway to straighten out the edges so they didn't look like an hourglass shape any longer. A few week later it rained and I noticed puddles where there were depressions in the driveway. I was particularly concerned with there being no puddle areas because I had suffered a serious slip/fall accident a couple years earlier and drainage was some we had talked about. I would highly recommend Garden State Paving and Masonry. The owner Sonny was very attentive to our needs! Since we had limited funds, he was willing to work with us. We did all of the preparations for the paving. When he arrived to pave the portions we needed to have done, he checked to make sure driveway was properly graded and did a final rolling on driveway. The driveway is huge and he did an outstanding job. Hoping to complete job next year. Thank you Sonny and company

What impressed me most was their speed. I called, they came the same day, provided a reasonable estimate, started the work the same day and returned the next morning to finish. Concept to completion in bout 36 hours!

We hired this company (Sonny Stevens) to completely re-do our driveway. The contract was to do just that. However, they removed only the top layer of asphalt, dumped a load of QP and when challenged about removing ALL of the previous asphalt, gave me a song and dance about it being too soft to re-do! Rather than doing the job right, the owner returned my deposit check and walked away from the job! Not very professional I believe that if I had not come home during the job he would have put a coat of asphalt on it and I would not have known until a year later when cracks would appear.

Very professional and thorough. Came when they said they were going to come. Cleaned up when they were done. Highly recommend them. Used them for driveway tear out and repave.

Very professional, great communication, on time and clean. Workers were very polite. Reviewed work when completed asked if I was satisfied. One week later applied sealant ... again on time and very professional. Neighbors are impressed and contacting Sonny for their projects..., great work ... great company

Sonny and his team were fantastic! Very honest and professional. They came at the time scheduled and did a beautiful job. We have two driveways so it was a challenging job but they finished right on time and the results are perfect. There is a reason for all of these 5 star reviews. I would highly recommend them!

The Sonny and his crew were extremely professional and polite. The foreman on the job was accommodating and his goal was to please and get the job done to my satisfaction. Sonny was very professional, on time, and on budget. He communicated promptly and clearly about what was involved and when he could do the work. His price was reasonable and his crew did an excellent job. Cleanup was excellent and quick, and Sonny instructed us about how to protect our new driveway and supplied the tape to keep anyone from driving on it before it had properly set. We are extremely satisfied and would recommend Garden State Paving without hesitation.

Sonny and his crew are top notch! We had issues with my other contractors not finishing up the block work before Sonny's crew arrived and Sonny was able to work around the other contractor rather than to reschedule . It was a pleasure working with them and they will be getting more of my business in the near future.

Garden State carefully assessed our requirements, provided a clear, specific estimate and a cost that was reasonable and competitive. Our driveway required re-grading of a steep drop left by a prior paver. Garden State incorporated the work into their estimate and delivered with flying colors: no more scraping of vehicles. Garden State also returned, post-install, to inspect the job and touch-up any required areas. Reasonable estimate, good communication and responsible customer service.

Sonny showed up @ the time he indicated and the next morning after contacting HomeAdvisor. My son was unexpectedly coming home that night. Sonny revised his schedule to accommodate the change and sealed one driveway himself. Sonny and his crew arrived a few hours later to install an asphalt driveway in my other lot of land in a choreographed system that took a minimum amount of time to expertly execute the contracted work.

This company is very professional and responsive. They really went above and beyond to make our driveway look like new, and they cleaned after themselves too!
