In April 2023 I had RJ Construction install new vinyl siding, soffits, shutters, trim, fascia, replace rotted wood, & install new gutters/leaders/guards on my 2-story center-hall colonial. I’ve waited over a year before reviewing to see how the install held up. Long in coming but this review is well-deserved. Throughout the project, Bryan Stellman (not sure if RJ is his company, but he knew his stuff, handling scoping/estimation/billing/customer satisfaction), the skilled installation team and their foreman Bobby (who checked in daily with the team) did a professional job, sensitive to our concerns & requests. Following the completion walkthrough they quickly resolved the handful of picayune details/concerns I mentioned. They were true to their word and contract, on schedule, and they cleaned up well. The gutters/leaders were included and (along with requested micromesh guards) installed by a capable subcontractor who did a magnificent, flawless job. Rock solid. They earned their money with me – as an engineer I was a difficult, fussy customer, but was always treated with kindness and respect. RJ’s contract was effectively a single page listing of ~15 line items, to which I added an addendum with another dozen or so line items to clarify options and minor details that were discussed but not in writing. RJ was also the lowest estimate of the three contactors in the final running, saving me ~15% and ~30% respectively for the same scope. Less than a week before Christmas in 2023, the ancient cover blew off my rooftop attic fan during a strong storm, allowing rainwater to run into our center hall stairwell. Everyone was on vacation and the next storm could be any time. Happy holidays. I thought of Bryan/RJ and reached out, but like everyone else he did not have a team available. Only two contractors gave estimates; expensive with delays into January. I was still searching with phone in hand when Bryan called back offering help the very next day – and at 30% below the other two estimates. I’ve since recommended Bryan, Bobby, and RJ Construction to family friends, who also had a good experience. To date everything is still beautiful, and if there had been issues I expect Bryan would have resolved them quickly.

Beware. Roofing company was unscrupulous. 2 months after Hurricane Sandy, roofer kept dragging feet and could not tell us when he would start the job. We had no roof and rain and snow caused further damage. Our family, including 2 small children, was living in small unaffected room on the floor all that time. No interior repairs could begin until the roof was repaired. Since roofer stated he could not give us a start date, we had no choice but to use another roofer. That roofer started the job right away and the roof was replaced in under a few days! RJ Construction threatened to sue us for breach of contract!!! I called their bluff. I secured a lawyer, and suddenly RJ Construction went away. Shameful.

We are displaced victims of Hurricane Sandy wtih 2 small kids. Our rolled rubber roof blew off in the storm and we sustained interior water damage as a result. We were told by Bryan Stellman of RJ Construction that they could replace our roof 11/28/12 and signed a contract for such on 11/7/12. After being pushed back 3 times after that initial date, here is his response of our inquiry when we could expect a 4th start date: FROM ME: > Hi Bryan, > > I know we have some bad weather today. It looks like it might > be raining beginning of next week too. Any idea when we'd be on > the schedule? Sorry to be a pest, but we can't get our kids > bedrooms repaired till the roof is on. BRYAN'S RESPONSE: I am slammed and I have 20 people call me a day asking when I am doing there roof. I can't do everyone the next day and I am trying my best. As I am sure you know there are thousands of roofs that need replacement right now due to the storm and there are only so many roofing contractors to get them all done. I am losing today probably through Monday or Tuesday due to rain. I lost a few days last week due to the snow. That being said, you are the 5th roof on the list, meaning I have 4 to complete before I get to you. Things have not gone as smoothly as I had hoped due to weather. My best guess right now is a week from Monday. If I can get to it quicker, I certainly will. I hope this helps. This puts us nearly 2 months after the date of the signed contract. Meanwhile, we have no bedrooms for our children, and with each snow and rain, the interior leaked furthered and interior repairs could not begin until the roof was replaced. We had no choice but to go with a roofer who could do the work and my husband explained this. What was Bryan's response via email? "Thanks for nothing. You and your wife wasted my time with your thousands of emails and phone calls" followed by a second email, "Expect to hear from my attorney. I'm suing you for breach of contract". So, this company is going to sue a displaced Hurricane Sandy family with 2 small kids after RJ contracting did no work for 2 months??? Considering those circumstances and that they never sent us back a signed contract with a written start and completion date, I'm sure the media, Gov. Chris Christie, any judge, referrals and colleagues in the home improvement industry would be most interested in hearing all about their intent to sue us. Good luck with that, Bryan.

It was superior.
Description of Work: Bryan the owners reponse time to our initial call for an estimate was very good. He was upfront and honest as to what we had on the old roof and what we would need to replace the roof. He took the time to explain the process and his estimate was complete. Even when super storm Sandy hit the east coast he took the time from his crazy schedule to obtain our inurance cert and let us know he would be able start our roof shortly with all the disasters around. The team came in removed old roof installed new. The job was done beautifully the quality and workmenship superior. They did complete clean up of yard and grounds and everything was completed within two days. We highly recommend them.

I hired RJ Construction (Denville, NJ), a roofing contractor, in the late fall of 2009 to replace the roof and skylights in my breakfast nook. The job was originally quoted by a gentleman whom I perceive to be the owner, Bryan Stellman, however he was not present for the vast majority of the work. I was mildly upset during the job when one of the workers broke an existing window casement by over cranking the window (no offer was made to replace or repair the window casement), but it was a 30 year old window, so I let it slide. It was more disappointing to learn that a splintered skylight frame had been purchased and installed by RJ Construction. While the splintered skylight doesn’t leak, another of the three skylights installed by RJ does leak on occasion during extreme thunderstorms. When I presented Mr Stellman with this information regarding the occasional leak in our brand new roof, he agreed to stop in and look at the ceiling and the obvious cracks and deterioration in the ceiling where the water came through. However Mr. Stellman concluded that there couldn’t have been water coming through, since he could not detect a stain on the ceiling. So I asked if he thought that might wife and I imagined the water dripping steadily onto our glass top kitchen table, and the pot which collected the water. Further I asked if he thought that we really enjoyed the idea of further work on our home and the headache associated with having a crew in for repairs on a brand new roof. What would be our upside in fabricating such a story? Mr. Stellman threatened to find time in his busy schedule to fix our imagined leak, but after more than a year of discussion, RJ construction has not returned to fix the leaky roof job.

The quote includes putting in Timberline Ultra HD shingles, power vents, chimney flashing, and ventilators with a thermostat and a humidistat in the garage. Every question we asked Bryan was answered. I plan to use them in the future.
Description of Work: I used Bryan Spellman, the owner of RJ Construction Roofing & Siding, to provide an estimate for roofing our house.
