Was very Happy with Carrano. We needed to replace the HVAC system (furnance and AC) and evaluated multiple quotes. Right through quote, evaluation and installation Carrano worked with us. I am a person who likes to research and get multiple quotes for expensive projects and Herb from Carrano did an awesome job to help me understand the various options. Was also happy that Carranno was able to suggest some minor ductwork to alleviate some bad design in the original construction. Was able to negotiate and arrive at, what I thought, was a reasonable price point for a specification that suited us. The work itself was scheduled and completed perfectly in Sep, 2016. The folks who came in did an awesome professional job and left the premises clean. The installation was in a CrawlSpace. The work was done on a permit that Carrano pulled in their name. Herb had warned us that Plainsboro Township took a long time to transfer the permit to our name, which was so true. We followed up multiple times with both Carrano and the Township to push this. Am still not clear of the process, but it sure tool a long time. We finally got the papers towards the end of Dec, 2016 and scheduled the inspections in Jan, 2017. The first inspection failed, so to some minor external electrical work. Apparently one of the cables conduits was tied to the refrigerant line and was as per code. Carrano fixed it the very next day. In-between we had an issue with the new Thermostat and Carrano was quick to come over and help us with that. I must say that we were impressed with the after sale service that we received from Carrano. Just call them and they are very courteous and supportive. So far so good with the Goodman units.

The window of time I was given was for 10AM – 12PM on Tuesday 12/27. I was also told that I should expect him closer to 10AM as I was 2nd on the schedule for the day. At 11:15 I still had not heard anything so I decided to call in to doublecheck the technician would make it during the window that was given. The person on the phone told me, yes, absolutely, he will be there in 20 minutes. At 11:55 AM I received a call from the technician stating he will be there in 35 minutes. Obviously I have an issue with that so I called in to the operator again. Her response was “well things happen” and that they “usually give a 4 hour window.” So I guess her logic was I should have expected him to be late? She later explained that the previous customer called the technician back into the house, but to be frank, as a customer, I only care that the promise that was made was not met. She also let me know he would probably be here in closer to 20 mins, not 35. Well, that was a lie. The technician showed up at exactly 12:30PM, which to his credit was truthful and fair to me. The technician’s name was Kareem and I could tell he was a little hesitant because I was fairly unhappy over the phone When he got there he did apologize for being late. He began working right away as I started telling him the issues we were having. After about half an hour he came back and told me he could not find anything that was wrong so there was nothing he could do or I would have to pay more because the initial $90 only covers the first half hour of diagnostics. At that point I told him I thought that to me it seemed like an issue with the thermostat as most of what I had described to him earlier on had to do with the thermostat not sensing the correct temperature and turning on for too long. He had to call his supervisor to walk him through how to troubleshoot that. It turns out the thermostat had been set for gas/oil heat when we have electric pump heat. He made some changes on the thermostat to account for this. He then proceeded to tell me that pushing a few buttons on the thermostat to change this setting added another $100 on to my bill. That set my total at $190. Hearing that, I asked that he please remove the charge and set this back to the initial settings. He confirmed with his supervisor that this would be OK and reset the thermostat to the factory settings. (For anyone reading this who wants to know how to make this change on their thermostat, here is the website for the guide, it is on page 7: [*** Link removed ***] The thermostat is a Honeywell/Gemaire TH4210d. I made the setting changes shown in this guide, and those recommended in this article: [*** Link removed ***] “The standard for electric heat is nine cycles per hour.” Unfortunately it is an unseasonably warm day today so I won’t be able to fully test if this fix worked until the weather cooperates. Overall Kareem was a very pleasant worker though I am not sure he had all the experience required to really troubleshoot the issue we were having. I really appreciated his honesty after being somewhat misled by the central operations at Carrano. I was also very unpleasantly surprised by the ridiculous pricing for a simple task that I was able to complete myself in about 7 minutes.
Description of Work: We have had issues with our heat for the past couple months. When we set the thermostat, it may read the room temperate as 55, so we set it to 65 to heat up to that temperature. After an hour or 2, it is blistering hot in the apartment, easily close to 75-80, but the temperature on the thermostat may show something like 53 or 54. Then when you manually turn the heat off, the room temperature reading will slowly go up

We've been customers of Carrano's for over 20 years, buying our units from them and having all service done by them. They are professional, courteous, responsive and back their work. Our immediate issue required two trips to solve - in both cases they were at our house within a few hours of our call (even tho this was a VERY busy time for them) and our technician (Anthony) was incredible. He also made it clear right up front that there would be no charge for the 2nd visit since they had just been out a few days before (one of their original wiring repairs became "undun").

On the initial service call (which was assessed a charge of $89.95 - which can be used toward the repair) I was told that to correct the issue with my water heater, the "system had to be replaced". We called the manufacturer of the water heater and were told that according to the code being returned on the unit, it was just the Gas Valve that needed to be replaced and the part was under warranty (unit was only 4 years old). I then called another Plumbing company (who did not charge a service fee) and they gave me an estimate of $285 to replace the valve. I then called Carrano again and were told that the cost to replace the valve was going to be over $1,000. I wanted to use Carrano as it would allow me to apply the $89.95 that was I was charged, for the service call, toward the repair.. I mentioned that we had received an estimate of $285 (from another company) and Carrano said that the $285 rate was impossible. I again received an estimate to replace the unit @ $3,500 from Carrano. I ended up having the unit repaired by the 2nd Plumbing company at the $285+tax cost and the unit is working properly - they were at my home for less than 30 minutes to replace the part. I contacted Carrano again to request a refund of the service call, since the initial diagnosis was incorrect. Also, since the rate to repair (once I explained that the manufacturer instructed that only the gas valve needed to be replaced) given to me by Carrano was over 3x as much as it actually cost and was told they could not honor the request for refund.

$89.95

Response from Carrano Air Contracting Inc
We are sorry your experience with us was unpleasant. To be clear, the $89.95 that was paid was a dispatch fee. We charge that fee to cover fuel, labor for our technician, etc. The estimate that we gave was based on replacing the unit because we do not deal with warranties for items that we did not install. We properly diagnosed the issue and we actually did not charge a diagnostic fee. We are happy you were able to get your gas valve replaced and again, we apologize for not delivering complete satisfaction.

I have used Carrano 3 times in the past to replace 3 sets of AC and Furnace. This is the forth time except I need a new AC installation and I need a slightly larger unit (from 3 ton to 4 ton). The quote I got was $3000 more than the last work they've done for me less than 2 years ago. After talking to the sale person, but still could not understand the reasoning behind the price hike, I went out shopping again. Sure glad I did that. I got myself a deal that saves exactly $3000. I liked the quality of work Carrano had provided before. I guess I would have to use them only for a replacement but not new installation ...

To best respond I have copied below one of the many emails back and forth with [member name removed]. "Good morning, [member name removed]. Please do some research and allow me to not defend but to substantiate the price increases. I have reviewed your account with us and even spoke to the owner, my boss Steven Carrano about how we can keep your valued business. The end of 2013 it appears you did 2 Trane systems in your homes. The smallest was $5700 and the bigger one at Hampshire was $6700 (the water heater was extra $1300). Of course prices on aluminum and copper have risen in the last two years as we discussed. However, the main reasons are: bigger furnace and much larger capacity ac (4ton). If you go online you can see that condensers bump up a lot after 3 ton (about 250 for ac and 100 for furnace). I performed a manual j load for your home and it is between a 3.5 and 4 ton for cooling. With your unique ductwork design I believe that for upstairs cooling the 4 ton is needed. Also, keep in mind that there is NO existing ac in this home. So we need to run electric lines from the main panel to ac condenser with new circuit breakers and disconnects as well as an added permit fee in the township for “added” ac work and added thermostat wire for the ac connection as well.. Our cost for these materials is about $600. Then as you mentioned there is no drainage or sump in the basement as townships do not allow condensate in a sewage line, so it must be pumped outdoors. This pump and line tubing-considering that you have an electric outlet at the furnace is another added 250. Copper refrigerant linesets are $300. Lastly, these add-on features will mean that instead of a two man job like the others we performed for you, we will need to send 3 guys which is about an added $500 per man day. All together these added costs for adding central ac is about $2000. So compared to 2013 the $6700 system adding 2000 is $8700… about $1000 as a “inflation” in the last two years. Lotsa rationale..Sorry. LOL Bottom line, we appreciate your business. Assuming you want the TRANE system as that is all you have put in the past, and you do heating and cooling I have gotten an approval from Steven to give you a valued customer discount of 10% on the Trane unit…So the proposal for the system $9800 less 10% of say even $1000 discount brings that price to $8800… I hope this is enough to keep your business. It was nice meeting you and please let me know whether these terms are acceptable and when we can begin your new ac project. Herb" I also reviewed with customer on a different occasion that in this day you can find anything cheaper, but there is usually a very good reason. I doubt highly his quote for $6000 is" apples to apples" and that there are many corners and maybe code violations that are being cut. I worked diligently with [member name removed] and was very surprised when he stopped corresponding with me and chose this route to negatively review our company and my services.

Description of Work: A service company that's never disappointed us. They installed two Mitsubishi heat exchange units some time ago. They've worked perfectly, until a compressor went. March 2012 is when we signed the contract for the install they have yet to get the proper permits to install the systems. When we started using the furnace we noticed it had air in the heating system which stopped the furnace they came out fixed the issue then the problem happened a second time we had to call our oil company to come out and bleed the furnace and it worked again. We were then asked for the permits for the work and that is when we realized there were none ever filed for completing the work. We have been dealing with issues ever since. I have had to pay three times to have the furnace restarted. I also need my chimney inspected and they have not yet sent the proper paperwork into the township for me to be able to have that work completed. I have been dealing with this process since March of 2012.
Description of Work: They replaced my air conditionor and my furance was fairly old and after speaking with the company I just decided to replace that as well.

Response from Carrano Air Contracting Inc
[member name removed] thank you for taking the time to relay your comments and feelings as we do appreciate your business and these matters you mentioned must have been very frustrating for you. The permit process in every township is a bit different. Sometimes it goes smoothly, however as a contractor we must obey and adhere to their rules and regulations. Chimney certifications are especially tricky with most townships as you have an oil burning system and we must be sure, as well as the township that the dangerous flue gasses are drafting properly thru your chimney. The oil furnace is a "forced air" system which we did install, but the oil lines from your tank were existing and any air feeding thru those lines cannot be attributed to the new heater. I realize this process was long and painful as we have made every effort to schedule these inspections and process the paperwork. This is your home and the inspector must meet with you. We can coordinate, but it is you who need to attend and allow the township access to your home. To the best of my knowledge in reviewing your account it appears we have "bled" the air from your system to resolv the matter in good faith as again these lines and oil feeds were existing and not in the new scope of work. I hope and trust this clarifies our position and helps your concerns as your feedback is important to us to enable our future efforts in good customer service. Thank you!

they took a long time to finish job tech leader was frustrated at the wiring and his team member. He said to leave us the old thermostat and did not. Since completion of job ive been emailing them every week or 2 to get the township permit app so i can schedule inspection and was given the run around. township told me its been ready but the contractor didnt come pay for it and pick it up. carrano rep then promised me he will take care of it next week only to be give me the excuse a week later they cut the wrong check amount so it took him another 2 weeks to finally pick it up. However they have forgotten to submit for the breaker panel job despite of me asking them to make sure that part of it was submitted back in June. The rep whom I won't name here is very good at apologizing without answering my question on how much longer I would have to wait. Instead he told me to wait until I receive it before calling inspection for both jobs. So to this day I don't have the status on the breaker job permit app and how thats going to complicate things should inspections not pass. I will not recommend this contractor and if this doesnt get resolved will have to complain to home depot.

I am updating this review because it is now December and I have still not received receipts. 6 months to get a receipt? This is beyond "a little behind". I don't like that I've paid for something and never got an itemized receipt. I felt that this company is fair and honest. My AC unit is about 15 years old and I thought it may be too small for the area I am trying to cool. I was fully prepared to purchase a new unit. The technician assured me that the unit was fine and with a new relay switch and cleaned coils, it would work perfectly. I paid $211 for the consult (no free estimates) and was told that they would come out the following afternoon to make repairs, which would cost approximately $400. I waited around until after 3 PM, but no one came out. I called and was told I didn't have an appointment scheduled. I made an appointment for the following morning. The tech came out and did the work and everything is working fine. The price ended up being $505. Although I feel $700 was a bit high, They could have told me my unit was shot and charged thousands. I am still waiting for email receipts with a breakdown of charges. they said that they are a bit behind on invoicing, so I will give a little more time. It's been a little over a week now. All in all, they did a good job. I will use again and I will refer them to friends and family.

[member name removed] thanks for your comments and input. We will try and do better with our communication as some of the issues we did not follow up with some simple instructions to you. Firstly, we do give free estimates on installation. However, somehow a technician was sent to you as this is a billable service. The service call was dispatched and set up as a technical diagnosis which requires a certified tech, not a salesman. Furthermore, the technician can email your copy and receipt at the time of service when you are signing the service invoice. I apologize for the confusion and mixed signals as sometimes things can get hectic throughout the day for everyone. Thanks for your patience and continued business!

Since we've had Carrano Air install these two units, there have been ZERO problems. The placing of the inside units was done with the greatest of care and efficiency. They took out an old, non working through the wall A/C, disposed of it and covered the opening carefully and then placed the inside unit unobtrusively over the old opening. After several negative experiences with assorted contractors we have finally come across a company that not only makes promises but also KEEPS PROMISES ! A very friendly, polite crew and an exciting result. Great experience, Thank you, Mr. Carrano, for having a company that leaves a happy customer after completion of the job.
Description of Work: An extremely efficient company. We agreed on a price that suited both parties and on an installation date. That day they promptly sent over 3 technicians who installed two of the Mitsubishi ductless heating and cooling units. The main units are placed outside next to each other, right below the window. You never hear anything when they're running, but the inside result is amazing. The crew was very efficient and prompt. They had the job done in an amazingly short time. NEVER any excuses, missing or forgotten parts or guys sitting around idly.

The price included both the devices. The experience was exceptional. The 3 or 4 guys that came out put the two devices in on the outside and then they installed the inside units. We had an old through-the-wall air-conditioning in one room and they took that out. They filled in the opening very carefully and very properly. They put the devices in and did the electrical work. They got the permits. They did a really really good job. The owner came by a day or so afterwards to make sure everything was good. He checked it himself. He ran it. It was a really totally good experience unlike most contractors we have had. The price was very good. The quality was perfect. Their responsiveness was excellent. We are going to use them again in the future. We are going to have one of those generators put in.

However, all summer long, the air conditioning would not cool the house even though it ran almost continuously. They sent a service man who indicated that the A/C units did not have an adequate charge of Freon. He "fixed" it and left but the units functioned the same. The next service man said that the A/C units contained too much Freon. He again "fixed" it without any change. This occurred a few more times until they sent another service man who found that the units had been incorrectly wired. Now the units worked (although the summer was over). We contacted Carrano's and asked that our warranty be extended since we had had so many issues with the units, were well into our warranty period and were unsure that they would continue to work well. We also asked for some refund for our huge electric bills since the units, although not cooling, had run continuously all summer. We never heard from them.We only recently found that while installing the A/C units and the water heater, they ran an A/C condensate line and an overflow line from the water heater into the sump in the basement. In doing so, they cut large holes into the lid of the sump. However, the sump is also part of our radon abatement system. With the holes in the lid, the system was no longer air tight, thus rendering the radon abatement system inoperative. All that I can say is never again.

Very satisfied overall with the service call and the technician. I was also very pleased with the dispatcher involved. She kept us informed of when the tech would arrive, making it much easier for me to leave work and plan accordingly.
Description of Work: Technician resolved the problem of the AC not blowing cool air. The Capacitor on the condensing unit blew out. The tech replaced the defective capacitor, checked freon / head pressure and cleaned coils on the condenser. He was very professional and honest.
