In the end they further damaged the drip edge of the roof, destroyed some of the landscaping, fought with each other during the entire process, did a really bad job of cleanup and we found out and quot;everythingand quot; did not include the tree stump. They did give us a credit for the stump of $100 after a lot of discussion. It cost us an additional $400 to have another company come in and complete the job. It's a shame that storms and the business opportunities they bring also bring out the vulture in people. I felt bad for his crew, he really seems to have an issue. I would never use the company again and would not recommend him.
Description of Work: We had used this tree service in the past and they were terrific. They had to remove the better part of a very large oak in the middle of a garden filled with flowers. They were very careful and professional. They were extremely reasonable, cleaned up beautifully and we had been recommending them ever since. THEN hurricane Sandy hit. We had a tree tip over onto our house. With all the destruction it was very hard to get estimates so we called Gary since we knew he had done good work in the past and had been fair with us. He came with his crew, ready to work and gave me an estimate of $2900. Being fearful that the tree would damage the house, I let them go ahead with the work without getting other estimates. He had told me his price would cover "everything". He seemed slightly loaded asked if I had any beer and I said no. The work was well underway when I went outside and the destruction of landscaping was as well. When I complained he told them to be more careful and headed out to look at some of our neighbors houses and offer estimates. Apparently they did have beer because by the time he got back he was loaded. After swinging around a chainsaw for a bit and fighting with his kid he went to his truck and fell asleep. Meanwhile, my husband had seen another tree service in the neighborhood on his way home from work and stopped to talk with them. They could see the house from where they were and gave him an estimate of $1500. They were removing a similar tree for that price. Unfortunately Gary's crew had already started so my husband spoke with him in his truck and he brought the price down to $2500. They left about 3/4 of the way through, after Gary and his son had a falling out and the son left, leaving the other two guys doing the work with Gary sleeping. They did not complete the tree removal or cleanup and said they would be back the next day to finish. Apparently, they had other bigger fish to fry and did not return for almost 2 weeks and we were only able to get them to come back by stopping payment on the check I gave them.

Gary was much cheaper than the first company that I had come out and he did a very good job. To be honest, I don't think I would have given him a shot based on the reviews I read on Angie's List but my next door neighbor recommended him and had used him in the past. Plus he was insured so I figured it was worth a shot. My only complaint is he left more wood at my property than we had discussed but other than that no complaints. His crew had to be careful with some of the trees because they were located near fences and my pool. They did a perfect job in that regard. Gary doesn't accept credit cards but he was nice enough to extend payment terms to me so I was able to pay him over a 2 month period. Gary came out a couple times to provide me with quotes because we kept adding to the amount of trees we were taking down so his quote kept changing. It finally came down to - we were keeping 3 oak trees and all the pine trees, but everything was coming down. He did a count and came up with 30 or so trees. Then on day one I came back from work in the afternoon and they weren't cutting any trees down and he said they had already cut down 30 trees and still had 20 to go. I said the contract said we were keeping 3 oaks and he did the tree count. He acknowledged that's what we agreed to and did the rest of the work without another hiccup. I would just recommend making sure you have him write exactly what you expect of him. Also, pricing is very negotiable - he was originally over $7000 for the work but he was willing to come in another quote I had gotten so shop around first and then have him come out.
Description of Work: I had about 50 trees cut down in my yard and the stumps grinded down. I had about 10-12 trees that were 24"+ in diameter and the other were 8-12" diameter trees.

The day that the son came out and gave me the estimate he had a higher price. I told him that his dad had been by a few months before and he had given me the estimate for $585. The son tried to give me one for $1,000. He told me he really couldn't do it for under $600. I was compromising and even allowed him to take away the extra services in order to do it for $600. He said he would need to confirm that he could do it for $600---said he could do it and would be back to do the job Friday or Saturday. They never showed up. I heard nothing and called Monday and Tuesday. I finally got a hold of the company on Tuesday evening and the woman told me her husband "was away" and had a drinking problem. She said that she would contact her son and make sure that he honored my estimate and would do the work. She scheduled me for today and brought her husband over around 8 p.m last night. He told me that he needed to charge me more money. He said he would go home and try and find the other estimate---which I don't know why that would matter. So today I'm expecting them to come over, they never show, I called and called and finally she answered and said they she would give them the ticket and they would be over to do the work. They never showed once again and so I called and called and left multiplied messages. Eventually he called me back and told me he simply gave me an estimate and had no obligation to do the work and then hung up. I had people coming for my roof work tomorrow, and I needed the trees removed in order to work on the roof. Now I'm going to have to push back that project--which might be weeks considering they are very busy. I also need a new liner in my pool and I would prefer not to do both projects at the same time and now I'm going to have to push that back as well. I also have a birthday party for 200 people on May 23rd and I had planned to have all of the work done by then. I am beyond frustrated.
Description of Work: They came out for an estimate and the price the initially gave me to remove 4 trees and trim back another was $600.
