Overall, it went fairly well. There were three men working on the deck, none of whom I met when I met the owner of the company. Somehow I expected the owner of the company to be the lead man working on the deck, but he just came by occasionally to supervise and advise. The lead man on the project was a little difficult to deal with, as he thought he was working for the owner rather than me. When I would speak to him about different aspects of the project, he acted as if I was bothering him. During the construction, it was very hot, and the men wore sunscreen. With their hands, they leaned on the vinyl siding of the house and stained it in innumerable places. I tried washing it off with Dawn and TSP to no avail. As it turned out, the vinyl siding had to be replaced. The men replaced it, but it was only partially attached. They had to come back to attach it properly. The siding is the same brand and color, but it doesn't quite match, since it is new. The workers also broke an exterior corner off of the foundation with a power gun. The owner made a decking piece to cover it. The workers also had to come back to adjust a railing that wasn't level. I asked the owner of the company to adjust the price of the deck, as a matter of "good will" for the workers messing up the siding, but he would hear nothing of it. Overall, I like how the deck turned out, but it could have been a lot less trouble when it was being built.
Description of Work: The company built a deck off of the sliding doors in the kitchen. The deck measured 13 X 19.

Response from America's DeckBuilder LLC
Customer. Thanks for your candid review. I am happy that you are satisfied with the finished product. Although I am, as you, disappointed with the process that got us there. As I informed you before construction began, I was not able to participate in the building process of your deck because of shoulder surgery (I’m all better now, though). As you’ll recall: I gave you the option of postponing the construction, or moving ahead with me only serving in a supervisory role. You chose to move ahead. I pride myself on being answerable to all of my clients, all of the time. That's why I came to your home each time you found a reason to voice concern about some aspect of the incomplete project. And with each visit, I found a solution, such as with the trim board that we used to cover the chipped concrete. (I did not “make a decking piece to cover it.” The deck skirting was creatively extended by two-inches to cover the 1-inch chipped corner. And the chipped piece was cemented back into place behind the skirting extension). The siding could have been cleaned, and would have been, if you had not been so insistent on it being replaced with the siding you had in your garage. We alway, ALWAYS, clean our project sites to (at least) the level they were before our arrival. There are modern cleaners (Dawn and TSP would blush by comparison) that industry professionals use every day to remove the type of mark that appeared on your siding. And we were prepared to use them. That you are unhappy because I declined your offer to reduce the final balance due by the cost of the siding that you insisted we install instead of cleaning the existing siding is unfortunate. And I will decline to apologize for that. We did what you asked, and then you asked for a refund for the extra work that we did at your request. Customer: We did every single thing you asked. And we built you a beautiful deck that will provide years and years of outdoor enjoyment. I hope that you can find some enjoyment in it. Finally, as I said when we last spoke: Please feel free to call or write at any time with any questions or concerns you may have regarding any aspect of our project. All the best.
