It was a mixed experience. The first day they were supposed to start work, they didn't show (someone was supposed to call and let me know, but didn't). The following two days, they got the bulk of the work done, and I thought the job was done. Turns out the heat exchanger hadn't come in yet, so they couldn't turn anything on since the plumbing couldn't be finished. The electrician came by for half a day, to do most of the work in time for the pre-scheduled inspection. Heat exchanger comes in the following week, plumber and electrician come back to finish things off. Electrician leaves junior guy to finish up, who doesn't really understand the system (admittedly it's complicated: steam boiler, with 3 hot-water zones, that means three relays, four thermostats, with certain priorities). Bottom line, they leave my house at 8:30 one night, with a circulator pump grinding away in the basement, rattling all my pipes. I knew it couldn't be right, and hit the kill switch. I talk with the owner, tell him about this and the fact that I noticed a small drip from one of the water pipes. They come back again, this time the plumber comes to babysit the (junior) electrician, fix the leak, and make sure it's all done right. Which it mostly is, except that it's still leaking, so he fixes it again. That night, I notice it's still leaking, so he came over this morning to do that. That's about five or six visits to get the job done. My overall impression was this, Dan is very honest and up-front. I added the four-foot baseboard extension at the last minute, and he only charged me an extra $200, saying that they'd have the system drained for the rest of the work, and the piping is exposed in the basement, so it wasn't that much work. He also disconnected a broken gas dryer, and capped the line at no charge. Dan is also very responsive, you call him, and he always calls back, usually within a few hours, sometimes in just a few minutes. He's also generally good at keeping you informed (except that one time, on what was supposed to be the first day). He always remembers who you are, where you live, and the details of your job. The downside is that he may be overworked. He just didn't follow through to the end with those electricians. I expect someone who's making ten grand off me to stay on top of the job until it's done to perfection. It's great that he keeps coming back to get the job done to perfection, but it would be better still if he stayed until it was done right, so I wouldn't even have to call him.
Description of Work: Remove and dispose of decades-old oil-fired boiler (converted from coal). Install new Burnham gas-fired steam boiler, to power two existing hot-water baseboard zones, and add an additional baseboard zone. Splice in four feet of baseboard to existing zone. Install heat-exchanger to facilitate hot water zones (not strictly necessary, but this is the better way to do it). Pull all permits, hire electrical sub, install all necessary electrical, gas-line, and plumbing lines. Steam boiler is power-vented, with automatic water feed.
