We had all new casement windows installed into our Quechee Townhouse. There was a total of 12 casements plus the slider to the porch. We went with the Marvin Integrity line. Our master bedroom had a window and a sliding glass door going out to a tiny deck that we never used. So, part of the job had them removing both the existing window and the sliding glass door and placing a new window (one large enough to meet egress requirements) where the door was. They would do all the construction work (framing, sheetrock, etc). They also removed and disposed of the deck for us. We had talked to several other vendors but chose Windows & Doors by Brownell mostly because we felt that they cared about doing a quality job and were capable of doing a good job on the construction aspects. There is a lot of debate over window quality but I like Marvin windows. But let's face it, there are other windows of similar (and better) quality and if you actually make an apples-to-apples comparison of the windows and find the window (and price point) you want, the primary variation between contractors is the quality of construction work they do. Hence, for me, the hard part was choosing someone to do the work, comparing the pros and cons of different windows was much easier. We opted to have them pre-stain the windows and trim. Part of that was a time savings so we didn't have to that. Part of it was that they would remove all the hardware from the windows prior to staining and hence do a much better job than what we would after the windows were installed. Within an hour of starting the job they knew they had a massive problem on their hands; there was a lot of water infiltration along one wall causing a lot of rot. In addition, they also found that the original construction was "a little lacking." For example, there should have been support under the slider to the concrete foundation, but there wasn't. Because this is part of a condo association, we had to get the association's management company into the loop. So, what happened: The windows themselves were installed without any problems. The staining job was impeccable. The trim work was excellent; all the joints were nice and tight. For the rot issues they worked with our condo association; some of the work they did, some the association did. But they also kept an eye on the association's people for me. They built support under the slider and jacked up that wall to get the sag out. After the work was done, they did a great job of cleaning up after themselves. One complication in all this was that I broke my ankle shortly after they started their work. With the construction being in VT and my living in Mass, getting things finished, like putting the shades and curtains back was going to get complicated. I sent them an email saying I wouldn't be coming back and my wife would go up to do those things. They asked why so I told them. At that point, they volunteered to come in and help with all of that. Bottom line: Everything they did was excellent. They went out of their way on several occasions, such as coming out to Quechee to measure on two-hour notice, after a full day of work, because we were going back to Massachusetts. The work they did exceeded my expectations for quality. The construction work they did for the rot repair and sagging wall was well done. They went well beyond the call of duty when they found out about my ankle. If you're looking for a quality job, I recommend them to you without any reservation.
