Originally we had agreed to getting one very expensive generator for our aunt who is elderly, but then she died after my husband had paid them in full for it to the tune of 13,170.00 but before any work had happened,so we decided to get two modest generators instead, one for her house because we were keeping it, and one for our main residence. You would think that $13,170.00 would be enough for 2 modest generators but they wanted more money, and we reluctantly agreed. We stopped agreeing when they wanted to charge even more to move a heater we had recently installed, so we cancelled the job and they sent a refund check. After discussing it we decided to cancel the generator to our main home as well because we had only decided to install it because they already had so much of our money, we really didn't need a stand by generator, and we quite frankly felt like they were ripping us off after finding out we could get a similar generator for 5k when they were charging us 8k. Instead of refunding the money minus 15% of THE DEPOSIT as their contract states, they kept a random amount of money. I am just going to give you the text as it was written by Greg Linton and myself: There was some question about the refund amount we provided from the canceled generator purchase so I wanted to try and address that. We had a deposit amount of $13,170 for installing two generators. When the first project was cancelled we opted not to charge a fee since we were still going to install a second generator for your family. When the second generator was cancelled we opted to charge a fee consistent with our costs of the projects. So we were entitled to an overall cancellation fee for the two projects of $1975.80 but opted to only charge $820. My response: As I understand the check was mailed and that is fine, I am not going to get into a big fight over 200 dollars, but I do want you to understand the following: First, I assumed that as any good business would do, that because Ed and your line guy told me that they would not be able to install the generator in Wilmington unless we spent $1700 more than the contract indicated, given that your company was unable to honor the original terms of the contract as it was laid out, that good business practice and legal necessity would have driven the company to a full refund. That you were unable to perform constitutes, in legal terms, an anticipatory breach of contract on the part of your company, which voids the contract and thus you were not entitled to retain any of the funds related to that job. Second issue is that the deposit was not $13,170, just because my husband gave you more up front than what was indicated on the contract as a deposit doesn't make all of the money deposit. The contract itself indicates specifically that the deposit was $4105, with the balance due at the completion of the job being $4105. hence my expectation that 615.75 would be withheld and no more. If you are going to try to interpret all monies received prior to job completion as deposit then I am certainly going to go to all of the review sites and let people know that they shouldn't give you any more money up front than is required unless they want to lose more than they were counting on if for any reason they need to back out. I want you to understand that I do sympathize with you and Ed as salespeople, I am a real estate agent and have had many situations where I ran around for people and spent my time and then had the deal blow up and it ended up being a loss for me. That is just the unfortunate nature of sales. I understand that you feel that your losses exceed the 615.75, and perhaps they do, I am not privy to your accounting or what type of financial investment you make up front on these deals. That fact does not, in my estimation, create a situation where you are justified in using tricky math to take more than was contractually agreed upon. We had given a substantial sum of money up front, if it isn't worth your time to work within the parameters of the money we actually have to spend then fine, but my opinion of the company has been downgraded, and you should know that reputation is everything now more than ever with all of the review platforms available. SO, Greg opted to get creative about what constitutes a deposit to justify keeping more money than they were entitled to. They did not have a deposit of 13,170.00, the deposit was 4105.00, they happened to have more of our money than just the deposit, but that doesn't make all of the money deposit, as the amount of the deposit was clearly stated in the contract. Further it should be noted we had a very nice generator installed by one of their competitors for $5000.00. They wanted over 8k for our home generator and almost 7k for the one at the aunts house. I gave them the option of retaining the business by simply coming back with a more reasonable price, meaning staying within the very generous amount of money that we had already given them, but they refused. You can decide for yourself if that seems reasonable or if they are too expensive.

The Powers Generator Service team was terrific. They were courteous, they knew what they were doing, and they explained it all well. I had major problems with Suburban Propane when they connected the generator (I should have gone with the company Powers uses). The woman on the phone at Powers was able to set the propane guys straight on one issue, the techs then found a leak from the propane guys when they came back. The difference between the two companies was astounding. I felt some comfort knowing that the Power's folks looked over the propane connections and spoke with those workers to make it safe. I also appreciated that the scheduled all the inspections along the way. Since the installation we had one issue with the generator that turned out to be human error (oops), but Powers was pretty good about responding. And the generator is wonderful with all the outages we get.

Brief history to provide reference point. Called this company over a year ago to troubleshoot and fix a problem. They were prompt, professional and effective. I was super happy. Soon after I began receiving regular calls asking me to sign up for a Maintenance contract, (opted not to). Called them this spring to complete an annual service and troubleshoot a problem with the system draining the battery. Technician arrived got right to work on the service. Before he left my wife called me so I could explain the issue I was having with the battery, I could sense he was only half paying attention. He said he checked the battery and it was ok. I asked if he had a miliamp setting on his meter to check for a drain on the system, he never answered the question, made some comments on how it was probably a short from the clamps associated with the Solar panel I had installed to try to keep the battery charged...I explained that the problem existed prior to the solar panel being installed. (He did mention to my wife that the panel was junk and that they could install a much better one). He said and quot;you should be all setand quot; and we finished the conversation. As I had expected 1 week later battery is dead. My wife called the office to arrange another appointment to fix the battery issue, mentioned that we did not feel it would be appropriate they charge the customary and quot;service chargeand quot; because the technician had not, in spite of my encouragement, fixed the problem. Office told my wife they would check on the charge and the schedule and get back to her. We waited 48 hours, no call, so we called the office again. We explained the issue all over again, the person answering the phone transferred the call to another person who was not rude but quite matter of fact, acknowledged we had called a few days prior and should have gotten a call back... but that she would have to check with someone about waiving the charge, but would call us back before 4:00 that day....it's been over a week now and still no call.

They can monitor the generator's status remotely. It was not installed properly but they did stand behind it and did not charge me for re-wiring. I did not look for pricing anywhere else since this company was the only one that offered what I needed. They tried to work with me.

They cut the line while they were digging, it was taped with just electric tape not waterproofed and left above ground. They also put the control panel to high near my electra box and that the door hit the floor joicses(sp) so the door could not be opened , when their inspector came to check the others work he said my electrician needed to fix it when they did this he stated this was not up to code, so they said they would have come back to fix this .I had to call my electrician in the winter to unhook the electricity to my horse barn , as the wires they left above ground keep shorting out and tripping the breaker. Seven months later I called my electrician come back (in the spring )to reconnect my barn ,which he did and there was now power to my barn so I could bring home my horse whom was boarded for the winter. It was now early may and I was going to bring her home. my electrician remained me I needed to call Powers to fix the breaker box they put to high to be able to open the breaker box door.Powers did come back to fix the breaker box when I called them and but some how the power to the barn than didn't work after they finished. I then called them and again they came out ti see what was wrong , this time the blamed my electrician and said it never worked after he hooked up the barn before they dropped the box,. They now said that the whole line to my barn needed to be replaced, and said that if I had a ditch 18 " deep dug they would come back the next week and they would put down new wire inside conduit and reconnect the barn this was Friday. The ditch was dug on Saturday that weekend ready for Monday .On Monday the manager from Powers called and said they wouldn't put the wire in conduit , when I offered to buy the conduit they than said I was changing the agreement and would not put the wire down at all. after many phone called to the manager refused to fix the wire to my barn, he did say he would give me $300.00 to have my electrician put in the wire and reconnect the barn. Powers also gave me the cost I had to pay to have my electrician connect the wires that they cut in the winter .I also asked them to do the service to my generator when they came out to replace the wire they refused to perform this job also. I bought the wire and conduit and my daughter and my electrician replaced the wire to my horse barn, I have now had to pay to have emy horse boarded for an extra 2 months because of Powers Generator . They sent me the money for my electrician , my service contract money back and the amount of $300.00 to have the power restored to my barn. I now have to find another generator provider to service my generator, as I would NEVER allow powers personal near my home.
Description of Work: Oct 2011 Powers Generator was recommended my my electrician to have a stand my generator installed, They came to my home and a contract was signed, the generator was to be installed by mid November.Within a week I was called and told the model I had agreed upon would not be available so I had to agree to a more expensive model, or wait months for the model I agreed to , when the finally cane to install the unit, I told them that where they were going to dig the trench to put the lines in , was very close to an electric time that was buried underground ( this was the line to my horse barn).

Response from Powers Generator Service
The customer purchased a Guardian stand by generator system from us in early October of 2011. At the time we were very busy due to Hurricane Irene and were scheduling into late November and December. Shortly after she purchased the generator New England experienced a second significant power outage from the October snow storm. Due to the large demand Generac informed us that her unit would be backordered for several months. We contacted the customer and let her know that she could wait for the backordered unit or we could substitute it for the same size GE generator. The GE generator was slightly more expensive than the Guardian but we did offer it at a price below our normal retail cost. She opted to go with the GE generator. We installed her generator just before Thanksgiving and after her gas company connected the gas her generator was up and running in early December. During the installation the crew hit a buried electrical wire while trenching. It is very difficult to avoid an unmarked wire that is only 6-8 inches below the surface and would have been fixed right then but the crew did not have the proper splice kit with them. We talked to the customer about it and she agreed that since the wire fed her barn and she did not need the barn until spring that we would come back then and fix it. Also, during the installation the crew discovered that the circuit breaker panel that they needed to install was a little too tall to allow the door to open all the way in the space that it needed to go. Since this did not affect the functionality of the system it was decided to install this panel to make sure there were no delays in getting her generator up and running. We again talked to the customer and let her know that we would come back in the spring to change the circuit breaker panel to allow the door to open all the way. In June the customer decided to have her electrician come to repair the broken wire to the barn. We agreed to reimburse her for that expense and did so. We also had one of our electricians return to install a new circuit breaker panel that would allow the door to open all the way. At that time all the work we did was complete and working. A couple weeks later the customer called to say that her barn did not have power. We sent one of our electricians over right away to investigate what was wrong. The breaker was tripped and would not stay on so our electrician did some testing to find the cause. He determined that the wire to the barn was working fine all the way from the panel and through the splice that was repaired by her electrician. He explained to the customer and her daughter that meant all the work that we and her electrician had done was working fine and that there was a short in the wire in a section that neither of us had worked in. He showed them very clearly how he determined this and they were able to see the results themselves. However, they refused to accept the results and said it had to be our fault and demanded that we fix it. In the spirit of customer service we decided to work with them to come up with a solution. We explained to them that we were confident that we did not cause the problem but would work with them and they could have their electrician investigate the cause if they wanted to. We then agreed with the customer that if she took care of digging a new trench we would run a new feed wire to the barn. There were several discussions about how the barn would be wired and we decided to run a new underground wire like it was originally except with the trench being the proper depth. The customer insisted on conduit being used and we let her know that if that is what she wanted we would give her $300.00 and she could have her electrician do the work. We felt as though we were going above and beyond to help her out with a problem that we did not create. Over the course of the next several days we communicated 6-8 times with the customer, her daughter and her electrician to try to resolve the issue. She was very uncooperative and made many threats and demands. We tried to explain to her that we were trying to help her out to get the problem fixed but she was being very difficult and would not listen to reason. I repeatedly let her know that she had the option of letting us run the wire or she could have her electrician run conduit and we would give her $300.00. We talked to her electrician who agreed that he was willing to run the conduit. He stated that he knew the customer well and that we were in a no win situation. He suggested that if the trench was not completely ready that we should not do the work since she did not understand the situation and would blame us for any problems that occurred regardless of the cause. She again just demanded that we come out and fix it. We agreed to replace the underground wire at a time convenient to the customer with the only condition that the trench was completely ready for us. She insisted that the trench was ready. When our electrician showed up the trench was not completely ready and she was extremely verbally abusive to our electrician. She yelled repeated threats and was completely uncooperative. At that time we made the decision that we were not going to be able to satisfy the member and our electrician needed to leave before the situation escalated. The next day we sent a letter to the customer terminating her agreement with us and a check reimbursing her for the repair for the broken wire and the annual maintenance she pre-paid for. We also included the $300.00 that we said we would give her to have her electrician run conduit. It is unfortunate that we could not work this out with the customer, however, we feel that we did everything we could and went above and beyond to help her with a problem that we did not cause. She was very difficult and uncooperative to the point of having to make the decision to no longer have her as a customer.

Powers installed the generator in 2007 and performed all the annual inspections. Prior experiences were fine; however, this one was markedly worse. It took more than four months to get the appointment booked although we've had an exceptionally mild winter. The technician was on time and competent, but his service notes did not provide needed information about a gas leak he found. When I called Powers to get more information, the manager was very rude and condescending. The manager told me that he was not about to call the tech to get any further information and all he was willing to do was read the brief service notes back to me. (I also had a copy of the service form.) I will not use Powers Generator again and would not recommend them.
Description of Work: Powers conducted a preventative service inspection for a 12KW (whole house) generator. This is a recommended annual service, similar to an annual inspection for the a/c and HVAC systems.

During the last storm at the end of August, we had several conractors come to my house to check out my Coleman standby natural gas powered Generator. Most charged me less then $100 but did not fix it. Powers Generator Service was recommended by the Manufacturer, Brookes and Stratton. They cam out fairly soon after the power went out. The serviceman was very nice and spent several hours working on it . He informed us that there was nothing wrong with the motor and that may not be enough gas getting to the Generator. and quot;It needs at least 7-9 PSIand quot;. I then called Keyspan /National Grid who came out that day and said that this probably was not the problem. They increase the flow to the house and it still did not work. After that I had a local generator company equipment come out and they said it was a loose magneto from and ignition coil and that it would cost me about $800 to repair and that they could do it right away. I subsequently received an invoice from Powers Generators for $705.91. I communicated with their service rep. stating I was very unhappy with this and do not plan to pay. On 9/29 they responded that they and quot;would like to opportunity to investigate this issue ourselves. You had another company diagnose the problem, so we need the opportunity to prove that diagnosis correct. Our plan would be to come down with the necessary parts that the other company diagnosed, perform our own diagnosis, and if it is correct we will repair it, and work something out with the first invoice. If your interested in a new machine we are willing to apply some of that towards a new machine. If your serious about going in that direction, I will have to work with our sales team to give you an exact amount of what can be applied. and quot;No one has come out since then, apparently waiting for and quot;the necessary partsand quot;. In the mean time we had another power outage last weekend. Which was a significant hardship for as at it was for everyone. If it was not for my need to and quot;negotiateand quot; with, we would have had my generator repaired or purchased a new one by now. Now 2 months later I have ordered a new generator from my electrician who I trust and know will give me good service.

Response from Powers Generator Service
The customer contacted us during the aftermath of Hurricane Irene to look at her failed generator. Our policy during mass outages is to take care of our service agreement holding customers first. We made an exception in this case, as we happened to have a technician very close by. As stated the technician did spend several hours investigating the problem. While he was performing diagnostics he found the natural gas supply pressure to be at the minimum requirement. With no other issues being found with the generator, and a recent gas meter replacement having been done, it was determined this was the cause of the machine not starting. The customer had a call into our office on 9/07 regarding the size of the bill. Multiple attempts were made to reach her with no success (We log all our incoming/outgoing messages and calls). In her message she also stated she had someone else come out to look at the machine and they diagnosed an ignition coil failure. Once we finally made contact with the customer we explained the reasons for the large bill: 1) She is not an agreement holding customer, the rates are higher for non agreement customers 2)This was considered "emergency service" as she required immediate response and we were on site within 24 hours of her call into our office, this type of call is subject to "emergency rates". We had agreed to work with her on the bill, under the terms that we have the opportunity to prove the other company's diagnosis beforehand. I told her we would look up the part, and let her know when we could get back out to further investigate. In the wake of this storm we had over 120 agreement holding customers that required attention due to this storm, in the same situation as her, so our technicians were maxed out through the months of September and October, and we had no one available to get back down to her at that time. At the end of October we had another weather event which resulted in another mass outage situation. At this time the customer called again, leaving a message stating she was refusing to pay the bill and was going to put a negative review on Angie's list. That evening a call was put into the customer, again she was not reached, and a message was left apologizing for the delay and an explanation of the extreme circumstances we were facing. We did not receive any call back. It is not Powers Generator's intent to leave any customer with a down generator. It is however our policy to take care of the customers who hold agreements with us first. We did make an exception initially with this customer, which in turn created unrealistic expectations on her part. We are sorry for her poor experience, and hardship associated with the outages, but we cannot sacrifice customer service on the part of our agreement holding clients. Our fault in this is not communicating our policies to her effectively. By the customers own admission, we responded to her initial service request "fairly soon" so her assessment of "F" for responsiveness and punctuality seems incorrect. Also worth pointing out, the customer has made no attempt to date to pay anything toward the initial service visit she requested from our company.

I have used them for a number of years. I would recommend them. They are very customer oriented. They schedule a regular tune up at our convenience. They have a gentleman who services my area. They are an extremely professional company. During the severe ice storm last year they were very attentive and helpful to the customers. They came out and performed the additional service after the generator had been running for quite a while during that ice storm. They make sure that their customer is in good shape. They are excellent.
