Tried to give local business my support and it turned out to be a total disappointment. At each twist and turn, I felt as if I was being exploited.
Description of Work: In late January 2024, my wife and I purchased a home in Salem NH. We asked our real estate broker for recommendations for handyman/cleaning services. We wanted the second-floor carpet removed and the house cleaned. A-handy, Lance Ouellette was one of the firms presented and it seemed like a good relationship, as we want things done before we moved in on Feb 8, 2024. Although a rush job, I requested a quote on a few occasions, but the work commended and was quickly completed. I was then presented with an invoice for $4,000. I later found out, from his own competitors, that it should have cost around $1,500. When questioned, Ouellette stated it was fair value. Although I had concerns, Lance presented a quote for purchasing and installing the replacement wood flooring. He initially bid around $11,000, which included quality flooring covering 1,100 square feet and installing the flooring. After committing to the original quote, he then suggested that the steps be done $4,000 and an 8-foot wall partition for another $4,000. While negotiating, he asked for $7,000 to purchase the flooring, which I provided. While waiting for the floor materials to be delivered, I went out and interviewed other contractors. I had independent quotes provided and none was so outrageous as A Handy’s. When the wood flooring arrived, I researched the costs and quality of the materials. Lance paid around $3,900 for the cheapest flooring materials. At that point, I voiced my concerns to Lance Ouellette and told him he was not going to proceed with the project. I asked for the money difference of $3,900 he paid for the wood versus the $7,000 I paid him of $3,100, as well as a receipt for the warranty. He has refused to provide either the receipt or return my monies. I also found out that the actual square footage was 834 square feet – which reduced the costs of the wood to around $2,900. I believe he had some extras, such as the stair steps, underlayment, staples and miscellaneous of $500, but Lance Ouellette still stole/over charged me more than $3,500.
