My husband and I had an extremely favorable experience with Ryan Norman of Norman Builders. From our first meeting to the final inspection, Ryan made the whole process extremely stress free. Ryan really listened and understood what we were looking for. He was always sensitive to our budget. His bid was extremely thorough, all of the costs were explained well and the overall budget was very reasonable. His estimated start date was only off by one week and the overall estimated time for the completion of the project was spot-on. All of the Subs were great; came when they were supposed to, very professional, worked seamlessly with all of the other subs on the project like a well-oiled machine. Ryan stayed in communication with us through the entire process. Ryan was extremely attentive to our project from start to finish. The workmanship of each phase was extremely well done. By far the highest accolade that we have for Ryan is that he never came to us with a problem; instead he always came to us with a solution. If anything unexpected was discovered on the job, Ryan knew exactly how to resolve the situation and presented us with viable options for a solution. Our home addition project consisted of a single-floor addition of a wraparound porch, screened-in porch, mud room, ¾ bath, and a great room with full basement foundation. The entire project took 6 months from the first day of excavation to the final walk-through inspection.

Ryan Norman and his subcontractors did excellent work, cleaned up after themselves (except for the plasterers) and were easy to work with. It was a big project, plus our house is well over 200-years-old, so nothing is level or plumb, so this was a challenging project. Everything was done to perfection. Even the building inspector was impressed, as was our realtor. Ryan is honest, pleasant, straightforward, and his crew did extremely high quality work. He did a good job of managing our project and managing us, too.

My husband and I cannot say enough about Ryan Norman, owner of Normal Builders. Starting with the initial contact, Ryan responded right away and upon meeting with him, was honest, professional and very knowledgeable. The turnaround time on a quote for the project was very fast (less than a week). We were so impressed with the quoted price as well as his online reviews that we hired Ryan immediately; we never even got a second quote! Communication was constant and consistent throughout the project. There were hardly any delays but we were always made aware of any slight change in plans right away. All of the subcontractors that worked on the project were highly skilled, responsible and professional. Never once did I hesitate leaving my home unattended when any of the contractors were there. Furthermore, it was evident that each person on his crew had the utmost respect for Ryan, something we found admirable. The overall finished product is far beyond our expectations. The space makes perfect sense in our home, like it was always there. The highlights include a vaulted ceiling, a large cased opening using 18th century barn wood as well as a custom transom window. The new room has enhanced our ability to entertain and we have already put it to good use! We would hire Ryan again without any hesitation and wholeheartedly recommend him for any project of any scope. Although there were many projects running simultaneously, we always felt like we were Ryan's only clients!

From first contact for quote to the last day of the project, Ryan's professionalism, responsiveness, and organization surpassed my expectations. Our project included significant structural work, framing, roofing, plumbing, HVAC, sewer/excavation, tile, windows, and finish work, and the quality of all of Ryan's subs was outstanding. The project was finished ahead of schedule, on budget, and we are enjoying our new space immensely. This was a massive and disruptive project for us. With two little kids we needed to move out of our house for 4 months. But Ryan's communication throughout the project kept us informed of what was happening, what was going to happen next, and decisions we needed to make to keep the project on track. Our ability to text or call Ryan at any time and expect a response very quickly kept us at ease that he was in control and on track. I could not have imagined that it could have gone any better. I would use Ryan again in a heartbeat.

We contracted with Ryan for a master bath and closet remodel (new closet built ins) and as the project progressed we decided to add some additional work with new hardwood floors, baseboard trim and paint in the master bedroom. Ryan and all his contractors were very professional and punctual. Everything was handled smoothly with no real surprises. Communication was excellent. Even with the add-ons, they stayed on schedule and the quality of work is very, very good. The best part was at the end of every day the job site was cleaned up. We actually stayed in our master bedroom throughout until it was time to install the floor and paint. We would hire him again 100%.

The project went extremely well and surpassed all my expectations in every regard. The project started exactly when scheduled. Once the work began, the project ran very smoothly. The team members were all very professional, skilled craftsmen and were punctual without fail. I was always kept informed of scheduling changes ahead of time and advised of any unavoidable delays or issues. Any unforeseen issues that came up were quickly and efficiently managed and resolved. Any changes I chose to incorporate into the design plan along the way were handled seamlessly. My home was treated respectfully and always left clean. The workmanship on the stone tile work was superb. The finished carpentry work was done beautifully. The final result was all I had hoped for and more. I have had a number a projects of similar scope done over the years at various homes I have owned and I can honestly say this was the single best experience I have ever had on such a project. Norman Builders is a very well run business. If you are lucky enough to have them do your next project you will not be disappointed. Thank you, Ryan!

I could not be happier with the completed project. Ryan's father, Dale, did most of the work including the demolition, the structural support beam, and the cabinet installation. He was meticulous, thoughtful, and incredibly skilled. The kitchen designer, Pam, came up with a thoughtful design that really took my family and our way of using the space into account. She sometimes took a while to get back to me with questions, but overall she did a great job. The electrician, plumbers, tile installers, painters, and countertop installers were all competent, courteous, and professional. I am very happy. The project took 8 weeks to complete which was within the estimated timeframe and stayed on budget.

The project went beautifully. We cannot say enough good things about Ryan, his guys and his subcontractors. Ryan is like no other contractor we've ever worked with and we've worked with a lot....most of them mediocre at best. He's a great guy, trustworthy and easy to work with. Ryan was on top of things throughout the entire project and responds to texts and phone calls within minutes. His guys showed up every morning, on time and were quiet and respectful of our space. We couldn't be happier with their work (especially Lance's tile work). His subcontractors were punctual and all did fantastic quality work. We would hire Ryan again in a second and would highly recommend him to anyone.

As before, working with Ryan, Lance, and crew was a pleasure. There was one small delay when the window did not come in on time, but otherwise everything went very smoothly and we are very happy with the results. Another job well done by Norman Builders!
Description of Work: This guest bathroom update was our second project with Norman Builders. We had such a great experience with our first project that we did not even consider any other contractor for this second, smaller project. The project consisted of a complete tear out, to studs, of the existing upstairs guest bath and construction and installation of all new walls, lights, shower/tub, vanity/sink, enhanced electrical, replacement window, and finish.

Ryan and his team were exceptional. Their professionalism and quality of work were above and beyond our expectations (we are very fussy). We spent over a year interviewing other contractors and designers. When Ryan arrived to give us a quote and offer recommendations, we knew his company was the one for us. It was a major project involving removing tile floors on most of the first floor and replacing them with hardwood, replacing all cabinets, center island and all appliances, installing granite counter tops, replacing 6 doors, extensive electrical work, new lighting, painting and staining most of the walls and woodwork on the first floor and some on the second floor, etc. We got constant feedback, recommendations and guidance from Ryan Norman (owner) and his crew. There were many things that we did not know how to handle but they gave us great recommendations. Also, they were very fussy about the materials. We saw them reject many items from their suppliers and request replacements as the original items were not perfect. Norman Builders are the dream team and we strongly recommend them.

I messaged Norman Builders to set up a time for them to come out to my home and give me an estimate for a few projects. I received a reply telling me to reach out directly through email outside of Angie's List, which should have been my first red flag. Instead I called them and left a voicemail. A well went by and I never got a call back so I called again and left another voicemail, and sent another message. That day I received a call back from Ryan. He started the conversation off with talking about my budget, asking how much I plan to spend for my bathroom remodel. I told him $20k and he laughed and said his bathrooms are at least $30k and that we were wasting each other's time. I had several bids at $20k or less already from other AL certified pros... Seems like these guys are in the business of ripping people off.

Remodel went extremely well. Ryan quoted the best price of three contractors and stayed to that price. Work was done according to schedule Ryan gave me. All work, from framing to finish work, was high quality and the remodel looks fantastic. Ryan is and his crew were very professional and always addressed my questions promptly and completely. Unlike some in the business they speak the language of a homeowner. They went the extra mile to make sure I was at ease with the process down to details like keeping pets inside and washer/dryer functioning even it didn't have a "home" yet. A pleasure.

Excellent. Outstanding sub-contractors, user-friendly and very professional. It was very interesting to see the work done from start to finish. All the workers and sub-contractors made outstanding efforts to be very accommodating thru the duration of the project. The project head, Ryan Norman, was there every step of the way. Just can't say enough about the cabinet installer and the flooring and tile specialist who brought outstanding work to the table.

Ryan Norman and Norman Builders were outstanding from start to finish. We come in contact with numerous builders, remodelers, and building professionals on a daily basis and can say without hesitation, Ryan and Norman Builders are in the top 1%. They initially provided a quote that included busting through into the existing master bedroom closet and adding that space to the bathroom and then rebuilding a closet in the master bedroom. Ryan helped us realize that there still wouldn’t be enough space to do what we wanted to, so we asked for a scaled back quote, which we promptly received. Ryan patiently responded to every inquiry and was right on top of things in terms of response time. We asked about the possibility of remodeling a second bathroom at the same time and Ryan was honest, to his detriment, in his response. Every aspect of the project that was within Ryan’s control was handled superbly. The workers picked up after themselves, laid new plastic sheeting to protect the existing carpet daily when called for, and showed up and completed work as scheduled. We ran into an issue with a vendor we had chosen and asked Ryan to handle resolution for us. He did so with professionalism and effectiveness. Everything in Ryan’s control was completed on schedule and without cost overruns. We will definitely call Ryan when we are ready for our next project.
Description of Work: We contracted with Norman Builders to strip our 30-year old master bathroom back to the studs, move the door, build a shower enclosure, replace the window, install a ceiling light/ventilation/heating unit and generally complete the full master bathroom remodel. We added on painting of the master bedroom "on the fly."

We could not be happier with the total transformation of our entire first floor. We literally don't even recognize it anymore. It went from being dark and dated to bright, modern and beautiful. If I could paste "before and after" pictures to this site, I would because they speak a thousand words. Ryan was a pleasure to work with from the day he came out to the house to scope out the job until the day he did the final walk through of the punch list items with us after the project was complete. He's very professional and easy to work with, responsive by phone or email, and does a nice job keeping the entire subcontracting crew running smoothly. They did everything from ripping up the old flooring, to installing new sub-flooring and insulation, installing new floors and baseboards, painting the entire first floor (including a brick wall, window sills, doors and door frames), gutting and re-configuring the entire kitchen, relocating and re-configuring the bathroom, installing a new window, installing new light fixtures and ceiling fans, updating our electrical and installing new appliances. I highly recommend them without any hesitation. We are planning another project next year and Ryan will be the first person we call.

Responded within 48 hours. Unfortunately they could not take on any new business. However, the fact they did not take the business tells me they don't want to over-book. That's a good thing, I guess. It's too bad because they have a lot of very good reviews and I have many other re-model projects that will be needed in the near/mid-term future; kitchen plus family room addition is one example in which I am also planning.

Ryan is great to work with, and I would hire him again to do more work on my home. Based on my experience, I would recommend him for any size project. Norman Builders is a general contractor- they use external subcontractors. They do not have an in-house team- you should not expect a platinum package of designers, in-house contractors, and project managers attending to every detail of your project. . If this is what you want, you may be sure to have your project on time, on budget, and without flaw; but you will pay alot extra for this level of service. Norman Builders is a solid construction outfit which has long standing relationships with contractors that they can depend on to deliver high quality work with good value. Ryan is very easy to work with, confident, knowledgeable, and amenable. He is able to deal with the situations presented, and always had solution at hand and someone to solve the problem. He is honest, fair, and genuine. There are no surprises or sense of mistrust when working with him. Trust is key- I always felt like I was being told the facts and being treated fairly. His trusted contractors were all extremely professional and efficient, and they had clearly been working with Ryan for many years. I would hire any of his contractors in the future- they are the kind of people I trusted to be at my home unsupervised. I have hired many contractors in my days, and I was very impressed with the consistency of quality and professionalism of his contractors. The project came on budget, in consideration of various add-ons we requested during the project. His prices are competitive, and I feel I got strong value for my money. The quality/craftmanship was very high. Ryan was always focused on customer satisfaction, and did not take any short cuts. The garage gets many compliments from people passing by. Not everything went perfectly, but anyone should not have the expectations that they would for a ground-up build. The project was behind the time schedule, due to difficulty in arranging contractors. The project started a few weeks late, and there was often long gaps of inactivity in the build. Several times contractors did not show as planned during the course of the project. Ryan was always communicative about the schedule and any difficulties with contractors. Through discussion with many other people, this is a general difficulty at this time as the economy has improved- most contractors are booked months in advance and it is hard to find someone to do the work. However, I feel he could have been more communicative in advance-he notified us of changes to plans in real-time, but I felt he could have done a better job of setting expectations for timelines in advance, and predict and coordinate the project schedule/milestones more efficiently. In the end, Ryan was sure to only use his trusted contractors, even at the expense of timeliness, and I think this is wise as he can be sure to get the right results. Regardless, Ryan maintained professionalism throughout and got the job done right. Overall, Ryan runs a professional construction business, and apart from the usual setbacks one should expect to encounter in any project, he runs the client facing side of the business well. If you want someone with experience you can trust, and a commitment to customer satisfaction, Ryan will do everything reasonable within his means to reach satisfaction. He is a great builder and great human being. I feel very content parting my money to him, and feel I got good value for what I paid. I feel confident recommending him to my friends.
Description of Work: Ryan built us a large 26x26 detached garage which had an upper floor loft. The garage had two separate car entrances, with 4 large windows and some architectural features (eyebrow roof over doors, window and door trim, ect). The garage included stairs leading to the upper loft, which had lights and outlets, but was left unfinished. With the garage, the entire driveway was removed and moved over about 10 feet to line up with the new garage. This required moving the granite curbs at the street entrance and reconfiguring the entrance. A large new asphalt drive was put in, which was wide enough to accommodate 3 cars wide for extra parking. Alot of earth was moved, and extra deep garage foundation added to accommodate the slope of the land at the garage location. Two large trees were also removed. Additionally, as part of this project, we had our home re-roofed (28 square), which included stripping off the old roof, replacing many roof boards, adding ice and water shield, drip edge, replacing all shingles with architectural singles, reflashing 2 chimneys, and adding two skylights. I did not contract to complete any hardscaping or landscaping around the new garage, due to my budget.

From the very beginning, Ryan was upfront about costs and responsibilities of all parties. When Ryan asked to begin the project a week later than originally planned, we were nervous, but he assured us that he would still be able to finish the project that was slotted for eight weeks in seven, and he did just that. Ryan's father, Dale, did the majority of the carpentry work, and did an excellent job at that. All of the subcontractors (plumbing, electrical, flooring) were on time, courteous, and did professional work. The only cost overruns we experienced were small and outside the scope of our original agreement. Ryan was always easy to reach if we had a question, and he performed excellent work for us. We are planning on renovating our bathroom in the next few years, and we will definitely hope to use Ryan and co. again.
Description of Work: Ryan and his father Dale helped us with a full kitchen and dining room renovation. We tore down the wall between the two rooms, tore down to the studs, put in new cabinets, quartz countertops, an island with a built-in sink and dishwasher, appliances, and hardwood flooring.

We were introduced to Ryan Norman by friends in Newmarket New Hampshire where we had bought our new home. They had used Ryan for work on their home and were really pleased. We could see from their house that his work was top quality. Ryan's bid for our remodel was concise, detailed, and reasonable. This was a large job that included gutting bathrooms, putting on an addition, an entire new roof, and painting inside and out. There was excavating, electrical, and plumbing involved. Ryan was patient and thorough during all the months of our work. He was responsive to all of our questions and changes. Furthermore, his crews were outstanding. Really great guys. Polite and expert. And Ryan's follow-up during the entire finishing was extremely helpful. We would highly recommend Ryan and his company.
Description of Work: Norman Builders was the general contractor for the remodel of our new house.

Thank you for the kind words about the quality of our work and the workers on the job. All of our subcontractors are very good at their trade and when you add that up, you get a great finished product in the end. Your home is beautiful and in such a nice location, I already miss the view! Thanks, Ryan

From the first time we met with Ryan Norman, we knew he was the builder we wanted to work with. His calm, relaxed demeanor in talking through all the details in preparation for signing the contract inspired confidence. From the first day of the job it was clear that everyone in his crew was on the same page, and work never stopped from October 1st thru the end of the job six months later. Keep in mind that through the last two and a half months of the job, the men had to sometimes shovel or blow snow out of the way before they could even get into the house to work. This was not an easy job for Ryan's crew. Our house is 120 years old, and once the walls were opened up there were many obstacles to be negotiated to meet the design specifications. Never once did they try to talk us out of something we wanted in our design in favor of taking a short cut that would make the work easier for them. We ended up with exactly what our designer drew up, with some recommendations from Dale on how to make things work even better. I might add that we were could not have been easy clients to work with. We had several add-ons that were not in the original contract. Every time we approached Ryan and Dale with another request -- tearing out a fireplace and rebuilding it on the fly, adding small improvements to other rooms --they were perfectly professional, and put up with a lot of requests from us, and also some bull from a contractor we wanted to go with before we finally found someone who could do the job right and coordinate well with Ryan's crew. We used more than one sub-contractor chosen by ourselves. Ryan and his people communicated and worked well with whoever came on the job. Ryan's own subs, especially his plumber and electrician and tile person, did an excellent job. It was clear that each of them took pride in their work. This was our first experience with a renovation, and it was difficult to give our house over to someone and trust that it would turn out alright. In fact it turned out better than we imagined. I don't know if the workmanship can be matched anywhere. We highly recommend Norman Builders for whatever you have planned. The job will get done right.
Description of Work: Ryan's crew (including his father Dale) fully renovated a kitchen, 2 bathrooms, 2 bedrooms and a living room, removed a staircase and a load bearing wall at the back of the house. Added a walk in closet in the master bedroom, put up crown molding in every room downstairs, and in the master bedroom. Installed new wood flooring in kitchen and living room, as well as upstairs hallway. Installed eight new Marvin windows. They took basically the whole back half of the house down to the studs and rebuilt. Installed a bulkhead door to the basement

We really appreciate the great review! I remember we first met over a year before we started the project, but it was worth the wait. Your home was challenging to work on because of the age… I still remember the 1890 carved into the chimney once we removed the walls! My father really takes pride in his work and takes care of customers’ homes like they were his own. I’m glad you were pleased with the craftsmanship, not just of the finish work, but in the other areas as well. You were by no means difficult to work with and very appreciative of the work, which makes all the difference on our end! Hope you enjoy the renovations for many years to come!

Ryan gave us an estimate that seemed fair for the work being done. He recommended a bank that may give us a loan. After we selected him as our GC, he started getting permits and work lined up. We ran into a several issues right off the bat (none of them were Norman Builders fault, one engineering, and others due to the town inspector) which caused the price to go up rather quickly (along with the quantity of work). Many of these issues were unforeseen but came up and Ryan dealt with them in a timely fashion. Norman Builders took on the project and started it right before a horrible winter, during the winter, we ran out of oil for the furnace, water leaked into the first floor, some exterior damage occurred. We stayed on Ryan and he stayed on his contractors to get the work done when it was supposed to be done. He took on the project when no one else would and was of reasonable cost. He made many extra efforts to smooth over any damage to the house. My only suggestions to Norman Builders would be to try to get to the work site a little more and have provide a little more guidance for the subs. Also provide an allotment for electrical fixtures (for the sole reason of budgeting) and if the homeowner goes over its obviously on them. Overall though I would still recommend him to others, he was always great about returning phone calls, emails, or texts.

Thank you for the good and honest review of our work. The error on the original architect plans and delays with the building inspector were unfortunate , but we eventually got moving in early December. I did my best on the additional unforeseen costs that were outside the scope of work by charging only my cost with no markup to make it a little easier. The winter was terribly challenging with the nor’ easters every week in December and snowstorms every week in February. I’m proud of the fact we were able to complete the project close to the original finish date and before your new baby arrived! Thanks for the recommendation and hope you are enjoying your beautiful home!

Norman Builders began our project at the end of June 2014 and completed the work at the beginning of November 2014. We were very impressed with Ryan's professionalism and project management. For the most part, Ryan kept the project on schedule and finished within the estimated time frame. For a project of our size, there were very few issues and when an issue arose, Ryan addressed it immediately.. In one case, it appeared that the duct work for a split heating system would have to be installed on the interior wall rather than the exterior wall. Ryan met with the plumbing subcontractor and found a way to install the duct work on the exterior wall.to our satisfaction. Ryan's willingness to consider alternative options as well as the fair and reasonable estimate for the project was one of the many reasons we decided to hire him for the job. As with all jobs, there were a number of changes and add ons and we believe Ryan always gave us a reasonable price. We never had any problems with communication-Ryan was very quick to respond to any communications whether by phone email or text. As has been stated in prior reviews, Ryan's sub contractors were excellent and did quality work. Most have worked for him for many years and you got the impression that they enjoyed working for him because he he was great to work with. A major renovation obviously causes disruption and inconvenience, but we think it went as well as it possibly could under Ryan's supervision. Overall Norman builders did a great job and we are so happy with our beautiful new space. We would not hesitate to recommend Norman Builders and would certainly consider them for future projects. In fact, Norman Builders will be replacing our front door when the weather is warmer..
