The leaks around my chimney actually are a result of a roofer from Gilford that did not properly flash and seal around the chimneys. He had also neglected to put a proper overhang at the edges of the roof and water streams down the clapboard as a result. When he resheathed the roof, he used a nailgun to nail down the plywood; the nails went right through the porch roof and he never finished it off by cutting the nails off. We now look at hundreds of nails when we look at the ceiling of the porch. He is no longer in business. I stopped Bob Carlin while at the auto repair shop in Danbury. He was doing interior painting at the home of the auto shop owner. I noticed Bob had a sign on his truck that mentions roofing and odd jobs. The mechanic is someone I trust and it is a small town, so I thought perhaps Mr Carlin might be an honest contractor. I asked him if he would take a look at the leaking problem and give me an estimate to fix it. He took the information and explained he was currently finishing the job he was working on but would stop by and take a look at it the next day. He gave me his business card so I could call him the next day. *Read the rest of the story above* I have been ripped off by several contractors in the past. I've learned some traits of the dishonest ones. They don't want to give you an estimate, they don't want to give you references, they put on the "super-sell" high pressure and the best, when I question why their estimate is what it is and ask them to explain technical details, they try to intimidate me by saying something like, "do you know what's wrong; do you know how to fix it? No one else has a problem with this." Steer clear!
Description of Work: My roof had leaks around the chimneys. I had had two other estimates for the repairs; $400. & $1,200. Mr Carlin came to my house to take a look at the problem. When I called him to ask what he found, he said it was not a major repair and that he had applied sealant to all the areas necessary and had found a flashing that wasn't not secured and blowing in the wind. Rather than come back a second time, he fixed it; for $68.00 including materials. I asked him about the things the other contractors had told me were necessary to repair the leak (installing a "cricket," pulling up shingles and applying more lead and weather shield and reshingling) and he said those things were excessive. Furthermore, if it leaked again, he'd come back for no charge. I have also had Bob give me an estimate to repair wooden floors in one room, sand and refinish. His price is $650. including materials. Bob was pleasant, professional, prompt and affordable. He guarantees his work. I would not hesitate to call him again and, in fact, am planning renovation projects that I will likely have him complete.
