This proved to be a costly mistake. We obtained two quotes for this job that were essentially equal but selected Ed specifically because of his ratings on Angie's list. Ed seems to be a nice guy but proved not up to the task. Our understanding from his description of the scope of work and what he delivered are not the same. Specifically, the roof leaks worse than it did before because he failed to adequately address the roof pitch difference between the main house and the addition by roofing up far enough, essentially stopping at the seam. After reporting continuing issues, it took some weeks for him to return and his remedy was to throw roofing tar over various areas of his roof replacement and the upper portion. It now looks like an amateur job in addition to not solving the problem. We contacted him again only to receive an apology but no real remedy. We are now working with someone else to properly finish the job for roughly the same cost again.
Description of Work: Addressed roof leaks in an addition by replacing the roof.

Unfortunately, things started out great and then as seems to be common with carpenters, he vanished and I never heard from him again. I had a leak that came in and ruined an upstairs hallway ceiling. Ed came and looked things over and believed that caulking the roofline and chimney would resolve the issue. His plan was to come and apply the caulking, then come back a few days later to spray the roof with water to ensure that the leak was fixed, and then fix the upstairs ceiling that had been damaged. He came back and caulked the roofline, I paid him $50 for his service, and then that was it. He was scheduled to come back a few days later. Never showed up. Never called. A few days after that he was to fix the ceiling in the upstairs hallway. Still never heard from him. I called and left and message. He never called back. I had even shown him a number of other small jobs that I would like to have done in the future but still never got a response. So, not having really rained, I don't know if the roofline is fixed. I plan to just replace the small portion of ceiling myself but unfortunately, Ed gets added to the growing list of carpenters that will not be doing more work on my house because they just don't have a sense of professionalism when it comes to handling appointments.

He did a great job and would have him do work on our house again.
Description of Work: Responded quickly the night before. He was on time at my house. He looked at it, gave me a good fair price and went right to work. It was a quick job he did a quality work, and did a bit extra with the left over cement. He sealed around the chimney and fixed a few cracked shingles, at no extra charge. He gave me a fair low price quote on re-shingling my roof after he noticed some flaws. He was here and out in 1 hour and 20 min. He didn't have insurance but said he would sign a document if I wanted him to with stipulations of him not suing the home owner on any injuries or other issues. This was ok with me. I would defiantly have him do some more work for me.

Ed Brown was referred to me by my insurance agent. I neglected to call him for a couple of days, and was a bit surprised when he called me. We set up an appointment for an estimate and I knew by the things he said that he had a lot of experience (about 17 years in 2011). He said all the right things with regard to my specific roofing needs (ie complete water and ice shield, hurricane nailing) according to what I had learned before he came. He measured and gave me a price on the spot (submitted exact estimate later on company invoice). I felt good about him, but asked for references. He gladly gave me names and numbers, but also addressess of some high-end homes that he had roofed. I checked his references and drove by a job. It's hard to decide on someone when you don't know him, but his estimate was $2400 less than a competing estimate, and the quality of work quoted was better (he would put in a complete water/ice shield instead of only 6-8 feet). I was thrilled that he recommended only repairs and re-staining to the cedar shakes on the other side of the house (The location and contemporary design of our home allows for this without visibility that the styles are different ) Another contractor told me to replace the entire roof; but Ed understood my financial restraints and honestly went overboard to resolve all my issues in the most cost-effective way. We also have a small, flat separate roof which he repaired with materials he already had to further keep my costs down. If you've never had to replace a roof, you can't truly appreciate the cost, knowledge and professionalism required, or level of stess and doubt you can go through! And to complicate matters, I was replacing cedar shakes with architectual shingles. I even joined Consumer Reports to decide which brand to use; it was not immediately available, but Ed ordered it for me, which he did without complaint, delay or price increase. I had to ask his opinion on color, because I could not find anyone who had used the same brand or color. Ed always discussed the pros and cons about different facets of the job with me and did not act like I should not be asking so many questions, as many contractors do. I was very happy with my choice in Ed by then; all that was left was the work. He arrived early every day, and living on an upper level gave me the opportunity to watch and monitor his work minute by minute (poor guy!) He and his helper stripped all the old shingles, carefully loaded them and took them away, and did the work in a very deliberate and professional manner. He did not waste time or try to rush the job He found a couple of additional problems in flashing and rotted wood. We discussed them and I told him to fix them. (It only added $75 to the job with my pre-approval and gratitude.) Everything was neat and clean every day when they left, and Ed was sure to walk around the yard with his lawn-mower-style-magnet to collect any stray nails that may have fallen. The roof looks beautiful!! I never dreamed I could be in love with a roof!! I think it's partially because I am the only one whose living space overlooks the roof directly. My leaks have stopped and the roof now ADDS to the appearance, value and insurability of our home rather than detracts. (Actually, I still had one leak and called Ed. He arrived early the next morning, showed me that it was actually a chimney problem, but he did some caulking (no charge) where necessary so that I didn't have to redo my chimney!) Now, NO LEAKS! I cannot express how happy I am that I chose Ed Brown to do my work. I feel that I am very lucky to have made this choice. Everything was perfect. He also does other home improvement work; I had him paint my window trim and will surely call him with other jobs. I am not alone in this, one of the referrals also had him paint the entire exterior of their house. I would refer him in a moment with the highest regard to anyone who needs work done on their roof. SUMMARY (for those of you who do not want to read my long passage!): EXCELLENT job, EXCELLENT price, EXCELLENT service, EXCELLENT reliability.
Description of Work: Ed completely replaced half of our cedar-shake roof with architectual shingles, replaced cedar shakes and re-stained the other half, repaired a flat roof of a different type, and also did some window trim painting.
