Goodine Builders, L.L.C.

In 2003 I hired Kenneth Goodine (soon to become Goodine Builders, LLC) to replace the roof on my house and garage. Our first problem occurred in February of 2006 when shingles blew up in a heavy wind storm. Mr. Goodine was called and he repaired the damage for which he was paid. We didn?t know it at the time that the shingles he had installed in 2003 had not been installed properly and were susceptible to failure. In September of 2009 we found large amounts of water damage in the back of the house where 4 shingles had slid off the roof in a location that was not normally visible. We had had heavy rain in the previous month. During the investigation for the cause of the failure, I was informed, by the town Building Inspector, an Insurance Adjustor, and 2 different contractors that the cause of the shingle failure was improper shingle installation. The nails had not been placed as specified by the manufacturer. As a result, the shingles all over both roofs had begun to slide down the slope, no longer being held by the nails. The nails had been placed by either Mr. Goodine or his workers, but the responsibility rested with Mr. Goodine. Because the shingles had been improperly installed they were not covered under the manufacturers warrant. Furthermore, data from the weather service archives for February of 2006 showed that the winds never exceeded 50 MPH, but the manufacturer warrantees the shingles up to 70 MPH. This clearly means that improperly installed shingles are more susceptible to failure at lower than normal wind speeds. An additional finding was that the required underlayment was not present in some locations on the roof. This is a violation of the building code. Subsequent to the 2009 investigation, Mr. Goodine was given the opportunity to rectify the situation, which he refused. I next began legal action against Mr. Goodine. The case was found in my favor in spite of Mr. Goodine?s argument that because I did not allow him to install plywood on the plank roof to ease his concern that the nails, if placed where required, would miss and be driven into the space between planks. As it turned out, when the roof was replaced by another contractor, the plywood was not needed and none of the nails missed their mark when properly placed, which was the testimony of said contractor in court. After the judgment was handed down in which Mr. Goodine was order to pay damages, I attempted to collect the debt but was unable too. Mr. Goodine had filed for his 2nd bankruptcy and I will never be able to collect the debt. Although, I was able to have my roof replaced although I was unemployed at the time. It is very clear that I will NOT and DO NOT recommend Mr. Goodine or Goodine Builders, LLC to anyone, ever.
