He was not one of the tradesmen that I called but was very zealous and presented himself as knowledgeable and as one who would work well with the homeowner. He wrote up a fairly detailed and comprehensive bid which was just above the middle of the four I had received. He started within a few days of when he had stated he would yet he was not on site as he said he would be. He was slated to have a crew consisting of certain workers but that did not pan out so he hired another person whom he did not know at all and did not stay at the site to supervise or determine his skill set, work ethic or work speed. The job was to have taken two to two and a half days but ended up taking over a week. There was a ladder accident that resulted in the 'new guy' damaging my front door extensively and ending up in the hospital. (He is fine now I heard but have never seen him again.) The roofer poked at my electrical feed wire from the street and I noticed some charring on my rake board! I ended up having to call the electric company on a Sunday evening and having the power cut and hiring an electrician to repair the wire which had frayed with age and weather. I do not place blame on anyone for this but I think that another contractor would have noted that the wire needed moving to apply the drip edge (it was too high up on the rake board) before beginning the job and not 4 days into it so that I could have had that work taken care of during normal working hours. The electrical repair ended up costing $400.00. The roofer did not, after repeated requests, both verbal and in writing, get a permit. This became a point of contention and he told the inspector that he told me to get it. Not true. I asked repeatedly for his certificates of insurances; he did not come up with the documents until nearly a week after the job was done. They still have not been faxed to my insurance agent as she requested. He was reactive and emotional and very unpredictable. On some occasions he was positive and reasonable-sounding yet more often he was explosive and seemed to play mental shell games. Hindsight is 20/20 and with hindsight I would NEVER hire this person again. Luckily he had one laborer, James, who was stellar. Apparently he has worked on a few jobs for this guy and without James, who did the lion's share of the roof, I would have been dead in the water on this endeavor.
Description of Work: Stripped off old shingles on 1-story ranch, breezeway, garage. Ice and water shield entire roof, new drip edge and some new flashing, applied lifetime shingles: my choice to go w/ the lifetime. (Replaced two sheets of sheathing that were compromised.) I elected to go over the sheathing with 3/8 CDX for strength and reinforcement as I have a 60 year old home. I paid for those materials as the roofer could not front the money. This was a simple and straightforward job that would have been any roofer's dream.
