Description of Work: They didn't do anything and that is the problem. I called them and made an appointment to get an estimate from them on how much it might cost to finish off a partially finished bathroom in my daughter's house. The first time the guy didn't show up. I gave them a second try and they came an hour late. He called in a subcontractor to do part of the work. The subcontractor Omaha and CB plumbing came out to the house and took A look and some measurements but I never heard from either one of them again. I would highly recommend that you strike their name from your list of possible contractors. I would never deal with either of those two companies again.

My experience with Mike Schmidt was excellent. When he came out to give me a bid he was sensitive to my budget and suggested ways that we could work around it. His crew showed up the next day and quickly completed the work. When Mike ran into an issue with the North wall he called me out to discuss the best way to proceed. He really cares about his work and wants to make his customers happy. I plan to work with Mike in the future.
Description of Work: I have an old garage built into the side of a hill that was deteriorating. The brick walls were beginning to bow in and were in danger of collapsing. There was also drainage issues that needed to be addressed. This is a rental property so I was on a tight budget. They completely tore down and replaced the North wall with block and shored up the West wall with a couple of I-beams. Also added dirt to fix the drainage problem and replaced the old stairs. They also did a significant amount of tuck point work on the brick.

The crew arrived two days before we left for two weeks, somewhat to my surprise. They were professional, pleasant, and cheerfully accommodating. When we came back the job was done except for some cleanup which was done well the following week. My daughter visited one day and found the wall partially complete. She returned a couple hours later to find the work torn out so the job could be done right.
Description of Work: Replaced a wood timber retaining wall 100 ft x 7 ft with concrete block. Modified wall shape as requested. Suggested and implemented alternatives that I liked. Installed concrete block steps and iron handrail. Installed wall caps. Landscaped across the end of the garage to eliminate a problem with water seeping into the garage during heavy rain and melting snow. Saved existing plants in pots I provided. Wall was adjacent to asphalt driveway. When the wall was torn out some of the driveway came up. These small areas were filled with concrete making a good-looking wall and driveway.

Work was started when it was scheduled. I was impressed with the work that the employee doing the tuck pointing did. He ground out the old mortar deeper than previous contractors had. The concrete was properly supported by rebar and the exposed edge was cleanly finished.
Description of Work: concrete patio slab was extended by 4 inches to provide better water protection to brick facia on wall below patio. This 10 foot wall was getting water between the brick and the cinderblock and was causing damage to the brick. This wall has been repaired and tuck pointed a few times previously and I was looking for a way to get a permanent fix for the water problem. I felt that the solution that Mike proposed was the most likely way to solve this problem. Concrete slab was cleaned and sealed. Brick wall was repaired, some bricks were replace and the wall was tuck pointed. Also, chimney was tuck pointed.

The first day Mike and Joe and one other guy showed up and completely demo'ed the bathroom. Before they left in the evenings they cleaned up the bathroom and the outside area. They then started rewiring and changing the plumbing routes that needed to be done. In the process of rewiring the electrical, Joe fixed a couple of fixtures that had never worked correctly in the 21 years we have lived in this house. The same was true with a couple of plumbing issues - Mike and Joe made sure they were done right - no more leaks under the tub or the toilet. I took pictures of each day's progress and on day 1 and 2 the bathroom looked pretty bare - they had to spend quite a bit of time fixing the insulation problems in the walls and ceiling. On day 4 and 5 it started looking like a bathroom again. By day 6 - when the taper and painter had been there and gone, it felt and looked like a finished project - except for the finishing touches, molding around the floor, grout sealing on the tile, building a new closet, and installing the washer and dryer.
Description of Work: Our bathroom was in pretty bad shape. We had leaks under the tub/shower and the toilet. The toilet leaks had been fixed several times with little or no permanent remedy. The electrical system was pathetic - only one plug-in and it was a strip (Mike and his foreman Joe wondered at the fact that no one had burned down the house.) In the winter, we had to use a small electrical heater in order to use the bathroom. (It turned out that there was no insulation in the ceiling at all and one wall - which used to be an exterior wall - had a combination of loose bricks and plaster lath.) We wanted the entire room stripped to the studs, new electricity outlets and wiring added, new shower instead of tub/shower, new toilet (high seat with dual flush), flooring, vanity (instead of just an attached sink) and mold resistant drywall. Mike showed up promptly and had lots of ideas to add - we were a little overwhelmed by all the choices we needed to make. Mike and his foreman Joe helped us tremendously by suggesting options or better solutions. Joe was there at our site everyday through the entire process. He also was present during the times when sub-contractors were present - giving us a very secure feeling. Mike helped us choose which stores might have the material we needed to buy, like the lights or the bathroom hardware. He also suggested tile stores, a local company who makes molded marble showers (much better - in my opinion - than what we could get at the big box stores). Mike's suggestion for the molded marble shower was the best solution offered by any of four contractors who offered bids. Mike and Joe took everything down to the studs, added new floor supports, then added nurock cement boards as a new sub-floor. We ended up putting Armstrong tiles instead of porcelain. We splurged a little (extra $250) for a $800 dollar hickory vanity. One new twist we added - we had Mike and Joe install a stacked washer and dryer into the corner of the bathroom. That installation required a couple of changes to the venting and electrical setup. Mike and Joe made it all work and to our satisfaction. When they started on the ceiling, they found no insulation at all in the roof area. That had to be corrected and added a couple of hundred to the original bid price. One final thing. We had only one toilet and one tub/shower in our house - so we were a bit concerned about not being able to use those facilities during the construction. The other contractors uniformly estimated at least two weeks without a bathroom, some said three. Mike said that he would be in and out in one week - we were a little bit dubious. Mike and Joe showed up August 2, 2012 and were cleaned up and out of our house (completely finished) August 13, 2012 - 9 working days total, and we were able to use the bathroom during the last two days - so Mike basically kept his promise. (I think he would have been even shorter on his time if the first two plumbers he tried to sub-contract with would have shown up - THEY didn't want to come all the way out of the city.)

The existing retaining wall basically amounted to a pile of dry stacked concrete blocks that had collapsed backward due to poor drainage and improper construction. It had been an eyesore and a source of mud and weeds for us for years. The existing garage was built on haphazardly poured concrete slabs that had cracked in many areas without a real foundation to support it. We met with Mike to discuss these two projects, he suggested possible solutions, and we negotiated a final agreement. The plan was to jack up the garage and cut out the existing slab around the edge of the garage, pour a new 42" deep footing, cut off studs to match the new sill plate, and then release the jacks and have the garage settle onto the new footings. For the retaining wall, the plan was to build a new engineered wall that would be tied into the existing concrete steps on the hill behind the garage. Workers began the work on Tuesday, finished on Friday. Workers took extra care to make sure the job was done right in difficult circumstances. Mike and his crew listened to concerns as the project progressed, and addressed these issues immediately. Finished product is better than we could have hoped for. His crew was polite and cleaned up after themselves, asked us if we had any concerns, and obviously took pride in their quality work. Mike was very personable and constantly checked to make sure the job was done right. We'll plan to have Mike and his crew back out for future projects.
Description of Work: Replaced a crumbling, leaning retaining wall with a modern well-built, engineered blocked retaining wall. Cut out and dug out faulty garage footings and sill plate, poured new footings to code, replaced sill plate, and tied existing wall studs to new sill plate. Filled cut areas with new concrete.
Overall, I didn't think Mike was trying to sell me on anything. I felt that he was genuine in his concern of what my issues were. Throughout the entire process, he was clear on presenting issues that came up or his ideas to me and involved me every step of the way. To me, he is a problem solver--he will listen to you and actually take the time to think about what the best possible solution is for you.
Description of Work: It's been almost a year since I had my retaining walls replaced. I am still very pleased and feel confident that I made the right decision in hiring Schmidt Construction. My story is kind of a long one--basically I was either going to sell my house or spend the money on replacing the retaining walls that line my single car driveway and support the stairs to my front door. I also was concerned with the big, weed-filled cracks throughout my driveway. If I was going to do this then I also wanted to expand one wall and add an additional parking area. Mike came to my house three times to talk to me since I had been indecisive and unsure of what I wanted to do. He took the time to listen to my ideas and concerns. Due to my conversations with him, I ultimately decided to stay and make the changes--a decision for which I have absolutely no regret! My existing walls were starting to crumble and one was sinking along with my long set of stairs. Mike recommended a mudjacker for my stairs (that I was very pleased with) and I felt very comfortable with Mike's direction on having the stairs mudjacked then proceed with the rest of the work. Mike also noted that there wasn't an expansion joint between the driveway and the garage floor, which had caused the well-concealed (from the previous owner) large cracks and hole in the cement block supporting the garage. It would be no problem to fix the damaged block and replace the concrete slab with an expansion joint. They would then cut the cracks in the rest of the driveway, re-caulk, and apply a sealant to the driveway. It turned out fabulous in my opinion--it was just such an improvement, I was just thrilled. Back to the retaining walls--Mike's crew was prompt and professional. Since I had taken that week off, I had the opportunity to work side by side with his crew and honestly, I thought they were great to work with. They were motivated and focused--they arrived at my house and got right to it. Before I knew it the old walls were out and they were putting in the new ones. This was in a heat wave at the beginning of August and those guys worked hard to get the job done. To say I was pleased would be an understatement. Mike also had suggestions for changing the width and the height of the walls from the previous ones, and near the end of building them, he had an idea to build the blocks around my tree in a ring on the second tier of the wall. The walls, driveway and additional parking area looks great and it really changed the look of my house. I have received many compliments on it!! A couple of other things...I had a spontaneous idea to bury the back gutter (something Mike had previously talked about) to go behind one of walls since I had a problem with erosion. Mike was very agreeable to my idea and it was no problem to add that into the ongoing job. Also, I had been working on a project in the backyard with a small 2 ft space between my backyard fence and wooden retaining wall (which by the way they added another timber and power washed the entire wall and made it look brand new). I wanted a concrete surface with flagstone instead of the abundant weeds and old sunken river rock. The day the concrete was poured for my new parking area, Mike had a couple of his guys wheelbarrow some concrete to the backyard at no cost and helped me complete the project I had been working on. This was an unexpected surprise and it really helped me out a lot.

Well, as a female homeowner, dealing with contractors is not always a positive experience. The estimate from Schmidt Construction was not the lowest bid, however in meeting with Mike Schmidt, he was the most receptive to my concerns and questions without appearing to be demeaning or trying to upsell me. It took about a week to get the driveway dug out and the curb cut, during that time we had some rain, the contractor made a great effort to have one of the guys cover up the project so that it wouldn't get wet. During that time adjustments were made to the slope based on my feedback, when I was unclear about what the time frames or processes were, Mr. Schmidt clearly explained them to me. I was also impressed at the amount of time Mr. Schmidt was on the job. On the day that the concrete was going to be poured about 8 guys were there to do the work and I was impressed at how they all stayed positive and on task. All of the crew was extremely polite and professional to me while they were working. During the project this contractor kept the mess to a minimum for my neighbors and was responsive to any concerns that they had about materials or machines near their property. I absolutely love my new driveway!! The sealer gives it a clean finished look and i think it's the best driveway on my block. If I have additional hardscaping needs I will definitely contact Schmidt Construction again
Description of Work: This contractor put in a driveway, partial sidewalk and small retaining wall for me. I had no pre-existing driveway so the space needed to be dug out and the curb needed to be cut. My house is on a north facing hill so slope and drainage were important to me. In addition to the above referenced work, drain pipe was installed from the gutter ends to the yard so that water would stay away from the house. I had thought that the cure and seal was an extra charge but it was included as part of the service.

Mike and his team were very good to work with and we think they did an excellent job and we are very happy with the end result. The demo took a little longer than planned due to the fact that the walls had 2 inch thick concrete/wire mesh which had to be removed. However the team ensured that the mess was completely minimized and cleaned up after themselves. The only issue we had was with the way the tile pattern was turning out. However I think Mike foresaw the issue and had the work stopped so we could be asked our opinion. The pattern was changed to the way we wanted it without any argument and we love it!! We trusted Mike enough to give him the key to our house, whilst we were at work. Most of the work was done over the Christmas/New Year break and the team even worked over the weekend (and New Years day!!). Overall we completely recommend Mikes work and are very pleased with the results.
Description of Work: Mike and his team remodeled an 8ft by 5ft bathroom for us. Job included removing old bath/sink/toilet and taking floor/walls all the way down to the studs. New piping installed along with new tile, drywall, bath/sink/vanity, painting etc. Job also included replacement of sink/toilet in another area of house. We purchased the tile/bath/sink/toilet/fixtures ourselves (our choice) and Mike's team put it all together for us.

Mike Schmidt met with me on site, and we discussed options on how to replace the old wall. I was given options of replacement with manufactured retaining wall stones, limestone, or oak timber (6x8s). I chose the timber replacement which was priced between the limestone and the manufacturered stone. Mike's estimate was lower than a couple of other contractors that had estimated the job. The schedule was set to begin about a week later. Mike's crew was on the job when scheduled and the entire job took about 2 days to complete. We built 2 walls in the project. One was 'L' shaped 24 feet x 5 feet long by about 5 feet tall. The other wall was also an 'L' shaped wall with dimensions of about 6 feet by 3 feet and about 4 feet tall. A plastic drain pipe surrounded with crushed limestone was placed at the base of the wall to control hydraulic water pressure behind the wall and drainage of ground water. At the completion of construction, the walls were power washed along with the driveway, and the construction site was left in a clean and presentable condition. Mike and his crew were great to work with, and I would definitely recommend this company to anyone wanting to construct or replace a retaining wall.

I can say enough good things about Mike and his crew, they did a timely start, tear-out was very fast and with minamal disruption, which was very important to us because of disability in family, this is the only bath that can be used by one family member. I have had work done before and was amazed this went so smoothly. He cleaned up after the mess that tear-out brings, installed new tiling and fixtures, did great job with old floor which was not in great shape under the old tile. He worked very hard at doing this quickly and that was a real plus to us. He was in and out in no time and now I have a beautiful updated bathroom. I would have him do anything. My kitchen's next!
