Mike Jansen Custom Cedar Decks

Last fall I had to have my deck replaced and talked with 3 different contractors. Mike Jansen was the most expensive but seemed the most knowledgeable so I decided to pay the higher price for a quality job from someone who gave the impression of being a real pro and dependable guy. This past March, he and his crew tore off the old deck and did the replacement. They did so in a timely manner and I was pleased with the “overall” workmanship. My huge disappointment came with his total lack of follow up. They had made some louvers for one side of the deck and placed some support 1 x 6 boards behind the louvers. When looking at the louvers, you could see thru them and the support boards had not been painted and the raw boards were very noticeable. After many attempts to get Mike out to paint these and several “no shows” he finally came out with a spray can and shot through the louvers leaving overspray on the actual decking. I told Mike that my 10 year old grandson could have done a better job. In addition to this issue, when tearing out the old deck, there was what I considered to be significant damage to house siding on the lower 2 siding boards. According to Mike this was to be expected and was due to the boards just being too dry. This made no sense to me! Since he would not agree to repair, I had to hire another contractor who also installed decks and said this damage was not normal. This cost was an additional $650. Mike did at one point offer to replace the louvers and I told him if the overspray could be removed that wouldn’t be necessary. After many promises made and not kept, I’m finished! I wouldn’t recommend Mike Jansen Decks to my worst enemy.

Overall the build of the deck was good. There were definitely short cuts taken that could have made this an A versus a B. Also service in terms of communicating with Mike was poor. Asking questions frustrates Mike, however being that some home owners have a few questions and are spending thousands of dollars Mike needs to be more patient and allow for questions.

They did an nice job on the initial install, and finished the job on time. The challenge has been getting them to come back to follow up and fix parts of the deck.

We met Mike for the first time at the Omaha Home show and glad we did! Mike and his team are true professionals. He came to our house to discuss deck design and to show us materials. Upon agreement he and his team completed a sizable deck that we are completely happy with. During installation he always ensured the area was clean and the deck came out beautiful. He also installed underneath the deck a system so that we could stay under the deck and keep dry during a rain. Mike continued to ensure we were happy with the deck during the entire construction process. We had some delays due to bad weather and he always kept us in the loop and actually was out working on some of the more miserable days of the year. We had looked at a number of deck companies in the Omaha area and are so glad we were able to work with him. He is honest, hardworking and professional. We would highly recommend his services to others considering building a deck. You have to give this company a look if you are considering building a new deck!!!

It only took Mike and partner a day and a half once started. Mike stays busy year around, so getting on his schedule took a few weeks, but once a start date was set, they were here on that date. They have built many decks, so they worked fast and accurately. They were both very personable and easy to talk to, ask questions of, etc. There was one minor cosmetic issue they needed to address after they finished, and they took care of that a couple weeks later. Bottom line: we are very pleased with the new deck, and would highly recommend Mike Jansen Custom Cedar Decks.

Mike was recommended by a friend who had recently used him. Mike responded promptly when we called for an estimate and spent time discussing what we wanted and explaining our options as far as design and materials. We went to see his display extensive display at the Omaha Home and Garden show. Mike also keeps an extensive picture portfolio of work he has done which was very helpful in giving us ideas and a clear picture what we were ordering. He also worked through several design changes during the process. Because we live in Lincoln we did have to work through some scheduling issues. Start date was delayed a couple times due to spring weather but once started he completed the work quickly with the exception of a small delay for railing caused by a change in design. Communication by phone was a bit problematic at times when he was busy but responded promptly to email and text. He also coordinated scheduling with our landscaper when needed. Overall the quality of his work was excellent and we are very pleased with the final results. His finish work was also excellent with extra lighting and quality railings,finished edges etc. He and his crew also did a good job cleaning up each day and at the end of the project. He also took care of a couple very minor details immediately for us. Mike's price were not the cheapest but competitive and when we compared the quality of his work with others we felt it was well worth it. He was meticulous in including exact pricing quotes so there was no unexpected costs to dicker about. We enjoyed working with Mike and contemplating having him do some additional finish work on the underside of the deck (dry enclosure) in the future. We would have no reservation recommending Mike to others. We would advise getting on his schedule early as his spring schedule fills up quickly.

The contractor failed to show up for "two" bid meetings. He offered a good reason for being a no-show for the first meeting. No additional contact was made or offered after the second no-show.

We moved into this house knowing that we would have to replace our existing deck. We meet Mike and his wife at a home show here in Omaha and asked Mike to come out and give us a bid for this work. They called the next week and came out and discussed our options with us. Mike worked with us on the best way to use the material that we wanted to use for the decking surface. We where going with composite material that came in specific lengths. He made suggestions so that we would use the material to the maximum affect.The project took a full week to accomplish. During this time Mike and his crew where professional and courteous. Even with the delays due to weather they completed the work in the minimum amount of time possible. We workmanship is great and we are very happy with our new deck. I would and have recommended Mike to others.
