I have never been so sorry to work with a contractor in my life. This was a contractor referred through a colleague (actually the family of my colleague). They were just AWFUL. I wouldn't use these guys to do ANYTHING. Professionalism was shockingly bad. These guys were EXTREMELY rude, juvenile, and uncooperative. So much for "the customer is always right" with these guys. The problems started with the timing. I basically contracted them for the week of the 21st of May. Then when I emailed to check on the schedule the week before, I was told they were expecting to do my project in late June or July. I was really upset, and insisted that they comply with the timing. They grudingly agreed, but only after complaining about it. They did show up quickly after that, but that gets into problem #2. I had a simple request, as you can see by the "service performed" description. Instead of removing all the sand, they left about half of it, and laid down the sod DIRECTLY on top of the sand--probably about 6+" worth. No surprise, the sod immediately started to die, despite my regular watering. I had to force them to come back and remove the rest of the sand, and lay down topsoil, and they complied only after I basically threatened them with action. They came back, and removed really another 2 large trailers of sand from my yard, and put down top soil, and re-applied the same sod. Again, this was done very grudgingly, and after several very nasty email communications. The only semi-redeeming thing I can say is they did come back and fix the issue, but again, only after a lot of nastiness and serious pressure from me. At this point, I *think* my sod may survive, but it is probably too soon to tell. That is another problem with them--they DO NOT warrantee their sod or any plants. Based on their continued insistence that sod will survive over such thick sand, I can see why that is their policy, because they are completely incompetent about plant life and don't want to have to answer about inevitably dead plants. They also had to sub-contract that out, which I was surprised to learn at the end. Apparently, their usual work is more construction-like, and more for new building complexes, and not individual homeowners. Two final comments: First, whatever you do, do NOT use these guys unless you want a massive headache, bad quality work, and grown men complaining and acting like 5 year olds. Second, be very careful about using family members of neighbors or colleagues, because if they do a horrible job like this, it gets awkward.
Description of Work: Remove large sandbox (RR ties and sand) in yard, replace with sod to make a nice lawn.

Response from Clear Creek Landscapes LLC
I was unaware that this review existed. I am aware of this project and actually still have all the email strings from this project. Since seeing this review I looked back to remind myself about what happened and how [Member Name Removed] got so angry with our company, myself and my salesman. My salesman sold the project on May 8th, got the deposit check shortly after, and we were hoping to get it fit into the schedule by the end of May. There were some current projects that delayed our ability to start by end of May and we were told that she could be a little flexible with us. We mentioned that it would be "mid to late June" when we could get to it due to the delays. As a landscape company dealing with mother nature, especially in springtime, we do deal with weather delays on top of regular project delays that are out of our control. We did assure the customer that we could get it done before mid June (1 to 2 week delay). This was not received well by the customer so we dropped what we were doing on another project and did her project. The project was installed May 23rd, we did not make a big deal out of coming earlier than our schedule permited, we received a few emails from her stating that it needed to be done asap, so we adjusted. There was no argument from our end about not coming, we just adjusted and made it work. We didn't think it was a big deal. The project entailed removing rotten railroad ties, removing excess sand from the existing sand box, install new sod in the area. We removed the ties, removed the excess sand, and installed the sod. While working with the sod farm on choosing the right type of grass and subsoil, they confirmed that many times in our area sand is a common sub-grade. In fact there are many neighborhoods with multi-million dollar homes built on sand pit lakes. The sub-grade on these high end properties is sand and much deeper than the amount that was in the area of our project. So, based on the confirmation from the sod farm, we removed the excessive amount of sand to the area would be level add some dirt and laid new sod. The customer was expecting all the sand to be removed and was upset that there was still some there. My salesman explained our position on why it was there and that it was a common practice based on the recommendation from the sod farm and University of Nebraska Turf Department. The customer contacted me as the owner and that is where I got involved and took over for the salesman to get resolution. I immediately replied that we will make it right by her and that I would make a site visit so I can see exactly what work was done and what would need to be done. I came on site and met with the customer as well as her mother. The mother was VERY rude to me to the level that I have never been treated before by a customer. I didn't feel that I gave them a reason to be rude to me, especially since my previous email stated that I would do what I needed to make her happy. I never said I wouldn't do what she asked, however I did want to explain the position that my salesman took in the installation methods and that as a company, we felt the original plans were acceptable per standard installation methods. I wanted to have a conversation to gain a full understanding of her expectations so we could get it done right. I didn't raise my voice and instead listened to the mother berate me. At some point I decided to leave before I said something I didn't want to. I replied to the customer the next day re-stating that we will re-work the project, remove the remaining sand (the original amount of sand removed was 9000lbs (the second time we removed sand it was closer to 2000lbs gauging from the pictures that I still have on file), and relay the sod. I also stated in the email that I will only deal with the customer who I am contracted with and not her mother since I do not want to be treated that way by anyone. The project was completed on May 30th. I requested that the customer continue to water the new sod as it needed more than what it was getting before. Per the warranty, the customer is a lawyer and it would be reasonable to think that the contract would have been read ahead of time where it states that "CCL does not warranty plant material as plant health is subject to customer care". This is because it is a live plant and needs to be watered and cared for by the homeowner to keep it alive. Warranty on perennials, shrubs and trees is a different situation, sod requires a lot of water a care for weeks after installation that the homeowner needs to do. As far and the comment about us being completely incompetent about plant life, that is a bit far fetched. At the time of that project, we had an employee with a bachelor degree in horticulture handling our plant installations. For 11 years running now, and consistently since 2006 when we started the company, we have had less than 5% plant loss from year to year. Typically companies in our market plan on 10% loss of plants in the first year of being planted. As you can see from facts, we do better than market averages. That statement is complete slander and a false opinion. We did subcontract the sod farm to deliver and lay the sod for us since it was the same cost for us to buy the sod as it was for us to have them lay it down for us. That was a business decision to spend less money that what was needed on the project. That does not bear any weight as to our knowledge and ability to efficiently and effectively install plants or have plant knowledge. We finished the project and the customer thanked us for "completing the project" and paid the final amount. This project did not go as planned and defiantly did not happen in a way that was satisfying for either party. Clear Creek did remedy her issues with the project in a very timely manner and never once said we were not going to make the changes she asked for, when in fact I stated that I was going to make the changes in one of my very first responses to her. The only email correspondence that was rude or close to "juvenile" I can recall from my end, was when I stated that I will not deal with her mother in this matter any longer and only her (the customer). Other than that I cannot find ANY rude or juvenile emails in the string of emails back and forth from her. It is sad that some projects don't always turn out the way both parties hope, however I feel that we did remedy the issue and did so in a timely manner.
