They destroyed the stairs, they shortened them so they aren't even to code. They left a lot of gaps and every gap was filled in with black caulking. The shower in one bathroom is not level, other bathroom bath tub not leveled. workmanship is the worst. was treated with the most disrespect. stay away
Description of Work: I had them redo my floors and two bathrooms.

We initially learned about Bath Planet at the Sprint 2015 Home Show in Council Bluffs, Iowa. We have one small 6 x 8 foot bathroom in our 1920's home, and have dreamed for years about having it renovated. We are not young, and since both of us work from home, could not have it out of commission for long. The Bath Planet rep assured us they do work on older homes, and since this is a family owned company committed to high quality and fast installation, they could complete our project in just a few days. With that assurance, we set up an appointment with a salesman. The salesman who visit us seemed very knowledgeable and committed to doing what was right for us. He recommended applying a leveling compound over our existing cracked tile floor, which would also cover an old unused brass gas trap near the door. They would then install new Congoleum Duraceramic flooring tiles we would purchase. A thin layer of drywall would be hung over the walls and ceiling to square off the room, and then acrylic subway tile wall panels would be installed behind our tub area and over the lower half of the room. A ceiling vent would be installed, and a new larger vanity with additional storage ordered and installed. We would purchase new light fixtures which they would install, along with hardware for our new vanity. We would care for removing our old cast iron tub, and purchasing and installing a new acrylic clawfoot tub and shower surround. The bid was $11,767 which seemed high for such a small amount of work, but the salesman insisted we would be very pleased with the quality of workmanship. In addition, they would be very respectful of our time and our home, and he felt the job could be completed in 2 or 3 days. Although we would be without a tub and shower during the renovations, we were promised we would not be without a toilet overnight, and every effort would be taken to minimize the mess, stress and inconvenience for us. We signed the contract feeling confident we had made a good decision. In early June, Bath Planet called to set up an appointment to review the work that would be completed and the choices we had made. We once again received assurances we would completely satisfied with the high quality installation, or they would do whatever necessary to insure our satisfaction. The week before, they called to let us know they would be starting on Monday, June 22nd. That Friday, we removed the door to the bathroom, took out our cast iron tub, and concocted a makeshift shower in our basement with garden hose for the week of the install. A subcontracted electrician came on Monday to install the vent, and did an excellent job. Once again we were feeling confident about our decision. On Tuesday, two men showed up late in a Midwest Exteriors truck. They introduced themselves as the owner of the company and his nephew. That was the first time we realized their main business is Midwest Exteriors, and they DBA Bath Planet on the side. They did not want to drywall the entire bathroom as written it the contract, and did not even mud the drywall that would be behind the acrylic panels. When we called them out for cutting corners, they became hostile and stormed out of our house. That was when our worries began. Eventually they returned and did reluctantly apply drywall over the remaining walls, but left us without a toilet overnight. This was during the CWS and no hotel rooms were available, so we were forced to walk down three flights of stairs to use the drain in the basement that night. When our plumber came to install the plumbing for the vanity and re-install the toilet, he was surprised to find they did not mark the hot and cold lines. He also found they had chipped our toilet near the bottom, and had not mentioned that to us. The three day bath install dragged on to day five because they left early on Thursday to go to a family cookout. When they finally finished on Friday we were so relieved to have them out of our home. As we started to clean up the mess, however, we began noticing the numerous problems. The floor tiles were supposed to butt together, but most had gaps and one in particular was nearly 1/4". They broke one floor tile and then glued it in anyway, even though there were extras that could have been used to replace it. There was glue and leveling compound in some of the seams that we could not clean. Near our existing wood stoop, they had cut the tiles unevenly and with a jagged edge. They attempted to hide this by applying an awkward, wide metal strip halfway covering our wood stoop. All 4 subway tile panel seams on the walls were misaligned. They had drilled a gaping hole in one of our vanity drawers that our hardware did not cover. In addition, they left our home in a mess. Leveling compound mud and caulking was tracked everywhere on our hardwood floors, and we are still cleaning up drywall dust because they didn't tent the room when sanding. We emailed the customer service at the Bath Planet corporate offices, but were simply referred back to our local contractor. Since the initial install, Bath Planet has been our three times to review and take photos of the work. Each time they have agreed the subway tiles were not properly aligned and the flooring tiles not installed properly. The installed turned out to be the brother of the main owner, while their customer service is a sister. We have asked repeatedly for the main owner and even the sister to come out to view the work, but that was declined. While we were told the misaligned panels could be removed and aligned correctly, they refuse to do this. Instead, we have only been offered options to cover up the mistakes with acrylic or wooden strips to "fool the eye", but they would make the problems even more glaring and noticeable. One panel installed does not even have the subway tiles panel stamped properly all the way down. Our last contact was on Monday, July 27, 2015 when the son of the installer finally came out to attempt to repair the problems with the flooring so we could at least move forward with installing our tub. At our request, he pulled off the huge metal strip over the stoop to install something more fitting, and we discovered they cracked the nearly 100 year old wooden stoop original to our home. While he did fix some of the more glaring mistakes in the flooring, there are still gaps in many of the tiles. We let him know that day we were extremely displeased with the quality of the installation, the misaligned subway tile panels, and the fact they had left us showering under a garden hose in our basement for over a month. He stated he was heading right back to the office and would talk to the owner and get back with us. We have heard nothing from them since. In summary, the team who installed our products cut corners, did not install the products properly, and instead pointing out their mistakes, attempted to cover up and conceal them. We love the products themselves, and would be completely satisfied with our renovation had the time and care been taken to install them properly. Now we are left with a mess, and will eventually have to pay to have a reputable company tear out and re-install the flooring and wall panels. While they offered a lifetime guarantee of their work, they have proven to be unable and unwilling to fix the problems with the original installation. The contract they use releases them from any responsibility, and includes a statement about repairs being completed at Bath Planet's discretion and on their time. That is our bad for not reading through all of the fine print. This is indeed a family owned company as promised, but there is nobody outside for the family who can be objective when it comes to complaints. The owner is apparently the only one who can authorize any repairs, and he has not even shown the integrity to respond to our repeated requests to speak to him or show him the quality of work that was done. Maybe we are old school, but we grew up in a era that when a person looked you in the eye and promised you high quality work, you believe them. This experience has shattered that perception. Not only have we lost trust and confidence in Midwest Exteriors, but all service contractors. The weeks and week of worry and stress have taken a huge toll on both of us, both physically and mentally. We are thankful our tub has been installed at long last and we have a functioning bathroom again. At this point, we will not allow Bath Planet back into our home to damage our new tub, or waste our time with excuses and cover up schemes. We hope by sharing our experience, we will spare others the ordeal we have endured.
Description of Work: The contract called for them to do in our 6 x 8' bathroom: 1. Apply a leveling compound over our existing cracked tile flooring and gas trap. 2. Install Congoleum flooring tiles we would purchase. The tiles were to be butted together without grout. 2. Hang a thin layer of drywall over the ceiling and walls to square off the room, mud and sand. 3. Apply acrylic subway tile panels around the bathtub area and lower half of the room. The tiles were to be butted together and the pattern aligned. 4. Order and install a new larger vanity with faucet. 5. Install a ceiling vent. 6. Install the light fixtures and vanity hardware we would supply. We would schedule and pay for our own plumber. We were responsible for the removal of our old cast iron tub, and installation of the new acylic tub and shower surround.

This project at this address was never done for a customer by the name of Jon Nelson. It was for 2 other gentlemen, so I have no idea who Jon Nelson is. With any type of home improvement project there is sometimes a difference between reality and perception. As a small family owned business we strive to eliminate that problem and work closely with our customers to complete their projects as desired. In this case, the products are installed correctly and we have never refused to fix or address any problems or concerns. We have actually gone beyond what the contract called for. The entire bathroom was dry walled. As with industry standards the dry wall that gets covered with the acrylic is not mudded and taped, but at the request of the customer we did this anyway. For the acrylic a running brick or subway pattern was chosen. Where these panels meet – they are butted together and that creates what looks like an expansion joint – which would be the same if actual brick was used. This was done to maintain the character of the home. As with actual brick, especially in an older home where things aren’t always square, the brick pattern may not be 100% perfectly aligned but is still within industry standards. An actual owner was on site doing the work and addressed issues. In addition we met with the customer on two separate occasions and worked out a solution to address their concerns regarding the panels. Additional material was ordered, received, and then refused by the customer. This resulted in delays. One of these options was to add an acrylic seam, which is another way to put two panels together, and is specifically designed for this purpose. No ‘trailer house’ strips were ever offered as a solution. As a part of installing the floor the customer provided, a leveling compound was used to address the unevenness. A transition was used at the entry due to the differences of flooring material which is normal for any flooring installation. This had nothing to do with trying to hide misaligned or jagged tiles. When replacing the first transition with a different one at the customer’s request, we did notice a crack in their wood transition (or what they’re referring to as their 100 year old stoop). This was repaired at the customer’s request as opposed to replacing it. At this point all flooring concerns have been addressed. We ordered additional tile (at our expense) to accomplish this. Since it was a special order item, this resulted in a delay. Concerning when the toilet was installed, we have no control over scheduling workers that have been hired by the home owner. Delays sometimes happen when multiple companies are working on the same project. The end result is the customers we actually contracted with have a beautiful bathroom and all parts of our contract have been fulfilled.

Planning for a large shower floor installment was a little off , because it had to be brought in through outside wall. They should have taken a better look at project to determine bathroom size as compared to shower floor. It was the largest shower floor they had ever installed. However,it worked out ok because outside wall had not been finished.
