+ 0 moreTom did outstanding work on what I thought was a difficult job. The building inspector was also impressed. In addition to the work that he did for us, Tom was willing to advise me on the part of the work I was planning to do, and he had no reservations about doing small parts of a project that I was mostly going to do myself. A lot of homeowners are like me--capable of doing a lot of remodeling work, but not professional enough to be able to do everything. It is invaluable to be able to hire professionals who are not offended by being asked to do only part of a job and who have the patience to advise the homeowner on parts of the project that the pro isn't getting paid to do. This was my first and only major remodeling job, and my previous experience in framing and carpentry was not extensive. Tom's willingness to share some of his professional knowledge with me made an enormous difference. My project has now passed all building inspections and I am finishing up the detail work.
Description of Work: I bought an old house with an unfinished basement. The stairway had very little clearance, so I had the city building inspector come in and advise me. His recommendation was to raise the floor underneath the laundry area, which was over the stairs. This was far beyond my capabilities, so I hired Tom Karel to do the work. Tom had to remove part of the kitchen floor and build a box to serve as an elevated floor under the laundry equipment. He had to do some finish work in the kitchen to make the new work fit in with the old. I also had Tom help me with the basement remodeling by attaching the footers to the floor, something I lacked the specialized tools to do, and building a soffit around some pipes in the bathroom, which required more framing skills than I have.
