Scott came out on a Friday, to provide an estimate and take some pictures. He sent me an estimate the following Monday. The estimate included this: "Labor - Running Ethernet Through Attic Space from Office to Living Room: Unit Cost: $75.00 Quantity: 8.0 Line Total: $600.00" In the email message he sent with the quote, Scott wrote, "Please see the attached estimate. I imagine running a route through the attic to connect the office to the living room could take a full day. If it takes less time, the billable time would also be less." When I agreed to have the work done, Scott and Andrew came out and showed up more or less on time to do the work. They did pretty good work, I think, and they got done pretty quickly: in about an hour and 45 minutes. (Not 8 hours.) But then Scott wanted to bill me the full $600 for labor. He said he knows he quoted me less but "they can't really go much below that for attic work". I pointed out that he'd quoted me at 8 hours and the job had taken them a bit less than 2 hours. He initially said sorry, we just can't accept less than that, but then changed his tune and said "I don't want you to feel like you're being ripped off", and gave me a $100 discount. At one point, Scott said to me, "That's really my fault, not yours. I shouldn't have itemized how many hours it was going to take". So I ended up paying $500 in labor for less than two hours work. Scott and Andrew made $125 / hour - EACH - off me for this job. Apparently I'm in the wrong line of work. With the cost of the cable and miscellaneous parts, the total was about $600. (However, the quote also included "patch cables" but they asked me to supply my own instead, and they never mentioned that when the time came to pay.) I had agree to paid the $700 initially so it's not like I paid more than the total they had quoted. But I paid a much higher hourly rate for the work than they had quoted ($250 per hour vs. $75 per hour). Do I feel ripped off? Would you?
Description of Work: I needed CAT6 Ethernet cable (that's computer network cable) run from my office up through the ceiling and down into my living room. The goal was to provide wired Internet behind my TV entertainment center, so I wouldn't have to use wifi there.
