The employee that stopped over promised different things and then failed to follow up. I will not recommend this company to anyone.
Description of Work: I had severe hail damage and the guy that came over had only worked for the company less than one week. He had no idea what he was doing.

June 2021, we listed our home for sale, we quickly were under contract by roughly June 13th. Per our agreement with the buyer we were asked to put a new roof on. Apple roofing was recommended to us, so we went with them. Do I regret it, yes, I 100% do. Let me preface this by saying our close date was on July 27th, that was the day we had to be packed up and moved out of our home. While reading what I have to say think about this. I was packing up an entire house by myself, because my husband worked in Chandler and was living in Chandler. I was tending to three kids, working, selling a our home and dealing with what you’re about to read. On July 20th, 2021, the roofers started to remove the old shingles, we also had our final walk-thru with the buyers that morning and the walk-thru went perfect. On July 21st at approximately 3pm my AC stopped working. I called Martin from apple roofing, he told me he would be at my house to figure out what happened. After them checking somethings, they concluded to call Oscars heating and cooling (not my choice). Oscars came out and checked my unit and said that I was out of freon, but that also my unit was old (a new one was put in March 2013), and we potentially needed a new one. We decided to put freon in the unit, which was going to cost $900. Per the hvac technician the unit wasn’t taking the freon and the tech wasn’t sure why, he said that we would come back the next day because it was dark at that point. On July 22nd, the owner of Oscars heating and cooling came to our house because he wanted to check our attic and the AC equipment, at the same time Martin from Apple roofing showed up. At this point I could tell Martin was freaking out because there was the possibility that his roofers’ nails hit something that caused my AC to go out. I honestly had that feeling, because I just had an inspection for the buyers and everything was sound, and the same time they’re working on my roof my AC suddenly goes out. Martin even told me if they did hit something they would fix it. Oscar, the hvac tech said that he couldn’t see a nail that hit anything in the attic and our unit was old. I spoke with my realtor, and she advised me that we were contractually obligated to deliver the new owners a house with a working AC unit. So that is what we did, we purchased a new AC unit for $5,000.00. On July 26th the new AC unit was scheduled to be installed at 9am. The AC techs got there and were putting everything together. They were finishing and running tests to make sure everything was running. However, this is where things got even worse. The AC unit itself was working but it was not putting out cold air. The techs started to inspect, the found that a roofing nail had punctured a coper line underneath the overhang of the roof. The techs called their boss, Oscar and had Oscar go out. Martin from Apple roofing showed up and was cussing up a storm due to his roofer’s mistake, because they had caused our AC unit to go out as well as we had to shell out $5k for AC unit, which it was money we were not expecting to pay. The techs unfortunately couldn’t do anything until this copper line was fixed. However, in order to fix the copper line, the roofers who had just finished the roof that day, had to tear a portion of the roof off so that the line could be welded. Martin had to then call his boss and get the okay to pay the AC techs to weld the line back together. During this time, Martin was avoiding me big time. So, I went inside called my husband and told him what was going on. I am going to digress in this story. When we hired Martin from Apple roofing, he said he would take care of all the insurance stuff, which he did. He submitted what he needed to. He said that the insurance would send me a check for the portion of what the roof would cost, and the rest once Martin submitted the completion paperwork and photos. We also had a 1k deductible with our insurance. We got our first check on July 6th. On July 6th, 2021, I called Martin and told him that I got the insurance check in. He came to our house, and I wrote him a check in the amount of $5,412.84, which was what the insurance company sent. We agreed that I would pay the deductible and the remaining balance, of $4,149.24 when I got the 2nd check from the insurance company, with $3,149.29 being from the insurance and $1000.00 from us directly. We also agreed that since we were moving to Chandler, Az that he or an associate would pick up the check from me when ready. Now, to go back. I called my husband, and we discussed the situation, and both agreed that Apple Roofing was responsible for the cost of the new AC unit that we had to put in, due to a roofer puncturing a copper line with a roofing nail. Not only were they responsible for that, but also the hotel that I had to book for three nights because our house was 95 degrees and unbearable to sleep in or be in. Martin and a few other roofers were tearing off the roof on the area where the copper line needed to be replaced, this went on for a few hours. I went outside to go speak with Martin to see how we were going to handle their mistake. I found out he took off, at that point I called him. I asked him when he would be coming back because we needed to speak about this, and he said that he was busy and had other things to do. I told him that there needs to be a solution, because if not I would take legal action. After that conversation I got the impression that he didn’t care. So, my husband and I cancelled the check we wrote to Apple Roofing ($5,412.84), because we felt we needed a solution to this issue in order to go forward with payment. The AC techs finished testing the system after they were able to weld the line together. I spoke with them, and they showed me pictures of the punctured line as well as other nails throughout the house that went all the way through the roof, they were careless. On July 27th, we moved out of our house. What started off as a very emotional thing to sell our house and move to another city turned into such an awful experience due to Apple roofing incompetence. I was so stressed out because I couldn’t have my children in my home while I was packing because it was 95 degrees in the house, but a few times during the day I had to because I had nowhere else to leave them. I was constantly crying. I could have really got passed this if it weren’t for the gaslighting, that Martin and branch manger Kevin tried to pull on me and if they would have just owned up to their mistake. What I am writing now doesn’t even do justice to what my family and I went through. Shortly after moving I didn’t hear back from Martin. He finally called me and still didn’t have a resolution, I told him again that we were willing to go to whatever lengths necessary within the legal system to sort this out. On August 6th, I contacted Kevin the branch manager, since speaking with Martin wasn’t getting anywhere. This is where the gaslighting took place. He started to say things like your unit was old and made me feel like they were doing me a favor because they were going to try and get this covered by their insurance as a loss. Yes, our AC was older (2013), but was still in working condition and was presented to the new owners and home inspector in working condition and when they started working on our roof, it was no longer in working condition because the roofers hit the line, freon was leaking all day, therefore the ac unit was running without freon and eventually gave out. It was really an awful conversation and experience. I told Kevin that, we wanted what we paid for the AC unit and what we had to pay for our hotel stay, which was around $300. I didn’t even ask what I had to pay for food because we had to eat out a lot. He told me he would submit my receipts to their insurance company and get back to me. We continue to receive bills in the mail, and I had still hadn’t heard back from Kevin. On October 25th, 2021, I reached out to Kevin again, he emailed me back “we got the work all done. I’m working on the insurance to get it all straightened out.” As of March 25th, 2022, we got another bill, so I emailed Kevin, because guess what he never got back to me. I emailed him this “I just wanted to follow-up on this matter. I am still receiving bills with interest building up on this account. I would like to wrap up this issue as soon as possible, it is coming up on a year now.” His response “Hey Christina, you can send payment in or call to pay.” My response “The bill doesn't reflect the actual amount owed. Can I get a current bill of the new amount after the revisions from your insurance company?” This was on March 25th, 2022, and again no reply back as of today March 29, 2022. What we should owe to them is the deductible 1k, plus the remained of what the insurance sent minus the cost of the AC unit and the hotel. Today is March 29, 2022, and as of today Apple roofing never submitted the completion paperwork to our insurance company. I would like to add that on July 24th, 2021, I did leave Apple roofing a good review because Martin asked me to and honestly up to all of that happening and just thinking our ac went out because it was older, it was a pleasure working with Martin. But, oh man did severally tarnish that rapport with me. So, if you got this far reading my review my solid advice is DON’T use this company, save yourself the headache.

I'm sure that the member felt like it took 3 months since his roof was already leaking before we roofed it. In reality however he signed his contract on 7-14-14. We finished his roof 9-03-14. That is 34 working days, about 6.5 weeks, and about 1.5 months time-frame. We made the member aware of our schedule before he had signed with us. As far as the guttering goes, we told the member that we couldn't do his guttering because it was an ABC seamless product which is something only an ABC seamless dealer can get. We did tell him he would need to supplement the insurance company for that as they had paid him for regular k-style guttering. He became upset with this and conveyed to us that he felt dissatisfaction. He did point out that his power fan hadn't been hooked up. We recognized this failure on our part and credited him an amount to pay the electrician. The member then refused to pay his bill because he was unsatisfied with the gutters. I pointed out to him that even if we could do his guttering it would require him to finish payment on the roof first as is outlined in the payment terms contract we both signed. He refused. I was going to seek legal action but saw that he had a bankruptcy recently. I offered to take a total of $1500.00 off of his bill if he would pay it and be happy he said that he would accept that. I am very surprised that he left this review. We try our best to accept responsibility for anything we do or fail to do, but there is a small percentage of folks that wont be happy with anyone.

Took a long time. No one would call. Shingles showed up on our roof one day and it was more than a week later that they were installed so all that weight sat on the roof all that time. No calls or communication. Small shed, they didn't have enough shingles, forgot they were doing, had to do much later after it was really cold and they don't look good. The staff that did the house and garage did an excellent job of cleaning up after themselves, but the after thought shed didn't happen like that. No communication about scheduled work, they would just appear whenever.

Kipp came to do the walkaround and estimate in July (we had water in the basement--but insurance wouldn't pay). They were very interested in doing the work, and it showed. He called numerous times, and even apologized for being too forward--saying he'd leave one last message. I appreciated that. Unfortunately, insurance did not cover the cost of the roof, so he adjusted his estimate *way* down. Insurance will pay a lot more to replace a roof than it costs, so roofers like to do roofs that are covered by insurance. It pays more. If insurance is covering it, you don't need to tell them unless the insurance pays the company directly. Keep the difference yourself, after all, you're the one that's been paying for insurance. They clearly can do the same work for a lot less (as was evidenced by the revised estimate, no change in materials/labor, just cost). This is the same with car repair companies, as I learned this past year. The cost of repairs will magically match the amount offered to you by your insurance. But Apple impressed me more than the rest of the roofers, some of whom didn't even bother with follow up phone calls (or even provide a bid), so I signed the contract in July and I wrote a check for 1/2 the cost of the roof. For two months we waited (they said they'd be about 3-4 weeks or so out), but with all the storm damage this summer all over the area, I wasn't surprised that it took longer. In late August, I got tired of waiting and not having an update. I contacted the company and asked when they would be doing my roof and within a day I had a return phone call. They said it would be a little while yet, but that they also worked on Saturdays. On a Friday, I got a call saying they were on their way. It was frustrating because I asked for a day's notice so I could bring my dog to work (so she wouldn't freak out). They apologized. My husband came home and got her, but it ended up raining all day--so they couldn't do the work. He suggested Saturday and I agreed. We were out of town, but when we came home, we had a nice new roof. To their credit, they did not cash the check until they ordered supplies for our job. They did not crush any bushes, plants, and even the grass had very little signs of trampling. I found one nail on the porch after our recent rain and a few very small pieces of debris, but Kipp had come back for a final inspection and did final cleanup within a week of the roof being put on. While here, I told him that we still had leaking around our chimney flashing and that the roofers put the satellite dish back on! He caulked around the chimney (it still leaks a bit) but still hasn't taken off the satellite dish. It has only been a couple weeks. They have not sent me a final bill, and I assume they will not until the satellite dish is off. Kipp promised to come back until the leak stopped--although he did admit (and it is true) that sometimes leaks can be pesky things. It leaked before they re-roofed it, and it still leaks. I should say it drips down between the wall and chimney and leaves about a 4-6and quot; water mark after a hard rain (like we had recently). Kipp is very friendly, professional, answers questions, but he is not the scheduler and not responsible for when the roof work will be scheduled (like most contractors). He was great with follow-up, so far. As soon as that satellite dish is gone, I will be happy. :-)
Description of Work: Replaced very old roof with new, put in ridge vents, replaced flashing and other hardware on the roof. Was to remove satellite dish.

This was my first experience with hiring a contractor so I was overly cautious. Brian was very helpful and answered my many questions and kept me informed at every stage. The work was completed quickly and with quality materials and workmanship. My house looks better than I hoped and I've gotten many compliments from my family and friends. I would definitely work with them again.

The salesman (Brian) gave me a fixed quote and said that their work was guaranteed. He also agreed to put a special long drip edge cover on the small flat portion of the roof. He thought that the decking might not be required, but he didn't check it to make sure, so he said that I would get a refund if not all of the decking was needed. I told him to check it, but he said that would be done when they come to do the job. Two or three weeks after I agreed to have them replace the roofing, they sent out a group of four or five Mexicans, one of whom spoke English. They didn't talk to me much and didn't ask any questions. Brian had told me that the roof would be put up in one day, which surprised me. However, it took three days. They came late in the morning the first day, so I knew it would take at least two days. There was no final inspection, and the special drip edge was not installed. Brian had no recollection of the drip edge and said there would be an additional charge of $600 due to multiple layers. I refusted to pay this, since he gave me a fixed quote. He became beligerent, so I told him to leave my property. He refused to leave and called his boss, so I talked to him, too. He was anxious to get the payment, so accepted the original quote amount, which I paid immediately. I have now discovered damages to some of the edging on my roof, none of which was mentioned by either the crew foreman or Brian. REBUTTAL TO COMPANY RESPONSE: This note is in response to Mr. Biegler’s final comments; 1. “This home was in terrible disrepair.” I gave the salesman a thorough tour of the hose, so it he had access to all of the damage. In fact, I had urged him to go up on the roof and make the tests that he needed to determine the extent of the damage and the parts required to fix it. However he refused and simply ordered enough decking to cover the entire house. He billed me for those parts in the beginning and said that I would get a refund on the parts not used. That didn’t happen. 2. He states that “nearly $1,000 was given off his bill. This is the first I have heard 0f his. It certainly is not shown in the contract/proposal that I signed. 3. He does not mention that I had urged the salesman, not once but several times to go up on the roof and make whatever tests necessary to make sure that the cost would be in line with his quote, since I wanted a fixed quote for the job. He refused. Thank you for the opportunity to express my disdain and disgust with this slick operator who avoid his responsibilities an provides sub-standard workmanship.

Response from Apple Roofing
Here at Apple Roofing we strive to make every customer happy. I personally went to the member's home when he had an issue and was there during the course of the job. We did take longer than expected during this job due to rain, and because there were multiple unforeseen layers underneath the existing roof. I determined whilst there that by 'special drip edge' Weldon actually wanted what we refer to as "soffit" and "fascia" around his home. This was in no way a part of our bid and wasn't listed anywhere on it. I personally did another final inspection after Brian, so there were actually not one, but two final inspections done. Unfortunately, sometimes we are unable to see all the layers on the roof before tearing into it. Brian suspected there may be additional layers, and stated on the contract the price that would be charged if indeed additional layers were found after discussing it with the husband. Brian also discussed payment terms with him which he did not abide by. As an effort to get paid, Apple Roofing forgave him owed monies on the additional layers which were spelled out in the contract. Now he is attempting to receive free soffit and fascia, and unfortunately we cannot provide him with this service and product for no charge. We did install new drip edge as agreed and I am attaching photos to show this. Background: This home was in terrible disrepair prior to Apple Roofing putting the roof on. There were leaks everywhere and containers all around the home to catch water. I have photos to verify this I will include. The member attempted to explain to me that water was rushing into his home through the fascia board. As a professional, I try to keep an open mind, but the leak he was describing just wasn't plausible. He showed me the container he told me he had emptied three times the night before because it kept filling up. I am going to include a photograph of this container I took because not only Was there a ring around it where water had been setting for quite some time, but there were spider webs in it and attaching it to the wall. It had not been touched in quite a while. I hate to call into question his character, but the facts and photos/documentation speak for themselves. I appreciate Angie's List trying to provide a resolution, please let us know if there is any plausible way to make this customer happy.

From the first phone call until the last visit, Brian was nothing but friendly and professional. We had a leaky skylight in our bathroom. Brian came right out and took a look and gave an estimate. A weather front was on it's way with rain and snow, so he covered up the area with a tarp. After the snow he came out and cleaned off the area. When the weather cleared up and the roof was more accessible, Brian came out and got finished in a day. He came back the next day to make sure all nails and stuff were cleaned up. We're very happy with the effort given for just a skylight repair and when the roof needs replacing we will call these guys.
