I was planning to replace my heat pump and furnace with a new furnace and air unit in the fall. The heat pump started leaking so we had to move the date up or do without air all summer. We had gotten estimates from two places and it was going to cost about $6000.00. A friend had used Express Maintenance, just a guy starting his own HVAC business. She was comfortable with the service and the price. We called and he was very honest in suggesting we not replace the furnace and save a bundle. So we just replaced the heat pump with a regular outside central air unit, saving us about $2000.00. He had asked my wife about installing a new thermostat she said middle priced... when she should have said "ask my husband" . I wanted a specific kind of thermostat with a large digital display that I could read at night without my glasses. He installed a $179.00 thermostat that had a small display. I told him that it would not do and he said he would come over the next evening to talk. Instead he came to my house when I was at work and installed another thermostat. On my way home from work I stopped and bought the one that I wanted, ($49.00 installed it myself) and he made me pay for the one I didn't want because he couldn't return it. $179.00 for something I will never use. He installed the wrong thermostat and it became my fault somehow. We also had a booster fan installed in the duct to increase the air flow to a back bedroom. The way the electric furnace was set up the fan would have to run all the time (24/7). He said that it would only use about $3.00 worth of electricity a month. I suggested an air pressure switch to make the fan go on and off with the furnace, that was another $60.00 which I also had to pay. The installation was also kind of hurried and sloppy. The insulation on the flex tube was torn and there is a question about a copper supply tube that is sticking out from the furnace by almost a foot. Not a very pretty sight and if someone bumps it i could lose the freon. No offer was made to correct the problems when they were mentioned (this would take extra time). I explained to my son that the less time he takes working on our furnace the more money he makes. Is this what I get for hiring a small independent business? I think a bigger company would have made it right. Who do I call for service now?
