Started to finish up basement as a DIY, as the major areas (plumbing, electrical, drywall, painting) were done by professional contractors. Along with carpeting we were going to attempt all trim work (as well as hanging 5 doors and 2 closets). All I wanted was an estimate of carpet installation - and then decide if we should do this ourselves. But we quickly found ourselves way over our heads on doing a professional job on the doors, and window trim. The main issue besides lack of experience was lack of tools. Mr. Messer came into the picture at the right time, before we made any serious mistakes and wasted expensive material (mostly oak wood). By providing us the option of a using an experienced carpenter to help (as opposed to high cost of a contractor to do al the work) we got the benefit of learning some "tricks of the trade", as well as piece-time work that fit our schedule and budget. Again, hiring John Messer and Quicklay for carpet installation also provides much, much, more to any home owner who has a home improvement project - especially one with a schedule and budget constraint.
Description of Work: Needed to install carpet in a newly finished basement, bought carpet at Menards and used their contractor list to find someone to provide installation services. Called several numbers before I reached the number for QuickLay - owned and operated by John (Jack) Messer. He was at my house within one hour, provided an honest estimate and then went to Menards to see see the carpet we were considering. He called me to tell me there was not enough of this carpet in stock to do the complete basement, but recommended another color for just the 2 bedrooms that would complement hallway and family room carpet color we desired. He then picked up the carpet and delivered it. As we had some additional carpentry work to complete (hanging interior doors, closets, and window casements) he also recommended a local carpenter to provide assistance in completion of this work. Due to my schedule and budget, I was initially skeptical that we could afford the time and expense necessary. Mr. Messer brought the carpenter to our home, provided and estimate of cost of labor, timeframe of work over two weekends (one being over Easter Sunday). The carpet installation was outstanding (and Mr. Messer also corrected some flawed (self-installed) vinyl in the laundry room and bathroom at no charge, and assisted carpenter in use of his own vehicle to pick up additional lumber. Mr. Messer's overall knowledge of the Minot area provides an intangible service to any home repair/upgrade project. Hire him for the carpet installation service, but you also get much more.
