Our interaction with Tyson Ferrell or Ferrell Construction LLC initially was amazing. He talked a lot about our options. Spent time with us to determine our ideas, preferences and get an idea of our style. He spent a lot of time with us initially without any cost to us. We discussed remodeling the entire house. We first hired his team in July of 2018 to pour a stained/stamped concrete patio and a small section of concrete on our driveway. Upon completion of the patio we discussed starting the remodel of our lower lever including the installation of 3 egress windows. His quotes were in line with what I thought was appropriate and were not out of line following the oil boom prices we were seeing from many. After the patio was completed, we discussed not doing the driveway concrete right away because we were blocking in basement windows on the driveway. We would pour the driveway concrete and window concrete at the same time. Our remodel started August of 2018. The project was estimated to take 3 Months and be done in October. In the initial stages I realized Tyson had omitted the Bathroom/Laundry room from the estimate and we had to renegotiate the contract. At this point our experience with Tyson really started to change. The first room of our project was not complete by October. None of the project was done by our Anniversary. I requested that he be completed by our Anniversary after not meeting the initial completion date. The slow progress continued into December. During this delay from October thru December we encountered several issues. He stated they were having trouble obtaining my tile. I went to Menards myself. I talked to the flooring department. I was informed the way my tile was ordered meant any coming in was not guaranteed to me. We canceled Tyson’s order and I reordered the tile. The tile was available within the week. Around this same timeframe it occurred to me that Tyson did not apply for a permit and there was nothing posted on our property. In December the project was complete enough to occupy. A couple of weeks into December My husband visited with Tyson and informed him I was decorating my house for the holidays and family. Tyson and I discussed what we owed him and he felt he was entitled to all monies agreed upon. We paid him all but $1,000 dollars of the contract. I made every attempt to assist with getting this process completed. I spent my nights and weekends doing a majority of the wood trim, doors and accents stain. After the holidays my husband and I took several days off to complete interior portion of our remodel. We had to paint and caulk a significant amount of trim, stain a wood wall and some additional wood trim, finish a patch job in the ceiling and paint the whole ceiling, we also had to finish painting the walls in a couple places. He had discarded our vent covers, which were not standard. I had to locate new ones and paint them to match our paint palate. He also made the opening to the shower in the basement extortionately wide and did not put studs at each end of the shower to allow us to install a closure for the shower. I had to identify a way to close the shower to be able to utilize it. March 20th was the first time we came home to find water in our basement. The one window Tyson did block in still had insulation on the exterior wall through winter and the moisture from the insulation was wicked up into the bead board and was funneling into the man cave in the basement. I called several times with no answer. Tyson called me back and I explained there was water in the basement where that window had been located. He stated he would come over that evening. I did not hear from him for a couple hours and when I tried to call him again, I went straight to voicemail. My husband and I cleaned up the water. When Tyson did come the following day. He identified the issue and removed the excess material and within a couple weeks he completed the landscaping on the north side of the house. We had not had an issue with this window since this was addressed. On July 9th my house flood alarm was activated and I was notified. When we arrived home, we found water in our basement a second time. I identified there was water in the south east egress window and the water had seeped in and saturated the carpet and several tile floors. I tried to call Tyson several times. I also sent him a couple text messages. When He called back and we discussed the water. He stated he was traveling and would come in the morning. We called family to assist us with moving the furniture, removing the carpet and getting the house dried out. Tyson came over in the morning, we identified the landscaping around the windows has settled significantly and water was seeping into two of the three egress windows. He explained his plan to fill with clay and compact the material to resolve the issue. I have made several attempts to call him and text him with no response for 2 days. My Husband and I are now removing drywall, replacing drywall, fixing all three egress windows, reinstalling carpet all of which should have been handled with urgency from Tyson. We will also have to block in the remaining windows, pour the remaining concrete. This overall experience has been overwhelming and very unpleasant. If I had to do this all over again I would NOT! Communication, reliability and concern are not a priority. This experience has taught me a lot! 1- Put a timeline in the agreement with consequences for delays. 2- Request a copy of the contractor’s insurance. I wish I had that at this time. 3- Review the contract to ensure you and the contractor cover all expectations from both parties. 4- Obtain and visit with references. (Most of his reviews are friends, family and employees) 5- Be very diligent and thorough when hiring someone to do work for you.
