About us

Three acres of potatoes were the seed for the first Scheels store in 1902. Frederick A. Scheel, a German immigrant, used the $300 he earned from his first harvest of potatoes as a down payment on the first Scheels, a small hardware and general merchandise store in Sabin, MN. Scheels Hardware entered the Fargo/Moorhead community in the early 1930s. In the years following WWII, the company expanded by opening hardware stores in a number of communities up and down the Red River Valley. The store located on Broadway in downtown Fargo remained the focal point for the company until the opening of a new store in south Fargo in 1970. “Southside Scheels” existed as a full-line hardware and sporting goods store until 1994, when the operation was split upon the opening of a stand-alone sporting goods store. Scheels Home & Hardware expanded to fill the existing South University Drive location and remained there until moving to its current location on 13th Avenue South in 2006. Our current location is a 45,000 square foot store housing a unique collection of specialty shops under one roof. Fashion women’s apparel, home furnishings and décor, barbecue museum, and a café featuring housemade soups, sandwiches and drinks are but some of the unusual features which add a distinguished flavor to the broad selection of traditional products typically found in a hardware store. Far more than just hardware, Scheels is all about Home and Hardware... a destination to be experienced! Merchandise selection has changed dramatically over the years. From farm supplies to camera equipment to major household appliances to motorcycles to home furnishings and women’s apparel, Scheels has always worked tirelessly to provide the highest quality products that our loyal customers desire. While the merchandise has changed over the years, the focus on personal service from friendly Scheels associates has not. Our success over 100+ years has come from this loyal base of customers served by dedicated associates.

I took my snow blower in to have oil changed , belt's changed and serviced for the winter. It would start very well when it was warm out but not when it was cold. Just what you need a snow blower to do. I recently lost my husband to cancer so this was one more thing I had to worry about. The service was excellent- they unloaded and loaded it for me. It was $100.00 less than the estimate. It was done when they said it would be. I have used the snow blower a lot this year and it has started every time. I will be using their service again to get my lawn mower ready ,soon I hope.

It went very well. We stopped by the store on a Saturday and explained what we needed. They called the next Monday and picked the machines up Tuesday evening (convenient for us,since we both work). We were told up to two weeks. Eight days later we got the call that both were ready and if convenient they'd drop off the next evening. Arrived when they said they would, gave me a detailed bill for both machines and I wrote a check.. Very pleasant and easy experience. Ran the snow blower for a few minutes and it sounded smooth and even and I used the lawn mover yesterday and that was running smooth.
Description of Work: They serviced a 2 yr. old lawn mower (Lawn Boy) that was running sluggish and readied it for winter. They also put a wheel back on a 16 year old snow blower (Yard Machine) and serviced it. The last time it was serviced was 8 years ago. Both machines were delivered and are running smoothly. There was a lot of work done on the snow blower, but I expected that would be the case. They serviced a 2 yr. old lawn mower (Lawn Boy)that was running sluggish and readied it for winter.
