I went to Jerry Sorenson to recover data from my hard drive based on the recommendation on a free web site. Jerry quoted $70 for diagnostic and back up and upon his return, he claimed that he backed up all data and charged me DOUBLE his quote. I paid his inflated rate, happy that my data was saved. After he left, I looked at my back up disk and found that he in fact, saved only empty files set up by the operating system and saved NONE of my data, all of which was in one single folder with my name on it. I texted Jerry; he returned the next day and collected my computer to recover my data for a second time. When he returned again with my hard drive, he reported that it was too time consuming for him to recover all my data (which was 31 gig) and reported that he had recovered only some of it (he recovered less than 1 gig). He then charged me AGAIN, this time $70 even though I had already paid him and he did not complete the job. I protested this second charge and he offered to have me pay it later, to which I did not agree. Jerry loaned me a data cable that he had used so that I may save the rest of my data by myself but he said that he would charge *yet again* if I wanted him to do that which I had already paid him to do(?!) with his cable, I investigated the work that he had done and quickly concluded that there was no reasonable point of departure for me to finish his job. I called Best Buy's GEEK Squad to get the work done. They charged $100, saved all files in 2 hrs with no fee inflation, excuses or complaints. I recommend folks to go there instead. After eight years of my having worked with technical support at a local university in a recent faculty position, I was convinced that Gerald Sorenson did not know what he was doing (at best) or was intentionally committing fraud (at worst... an extremely poor judge of age, Jerry kept referring to how young and naive I am in our discourse. I never disclosed to him my actual age.) My visit to Best Buy's Geek Squad confirmed that intentional or not, he is someone with whom to avoid doing business. After going to Geek Squad and getting my data recovered there, I ask that Jerry return my money. He refused, and I had no recourse but to cancel my check to him and mail him his data cable.
Description of Work: I went to Jerry Sorenson to recover data from my hard drive and he charged me for this service. But he saved some empty files set up by the operating system on my back up drive instead.
