The install went extremely well on my end. Downtime was limited to one workday and part of the weekend. My understanding is that it was a new way to perform such an install so there were some glitches between YCF and their support but it was never evident by me. The transition from the old hardware to the new came across as relatively seamless, quick and less than two-thirds the cost of the traditional upgrade. Time, money and headaches were all reduced.

Regarding pricing: We haven't had a price increase in over 3 years and in fact we had a price DECREASE in Virus Remove - down about 15% over the past 9 years which was due to efficiencies in the shop and new tools for removal. We also cap virus removal at this rate no matter how many hours it takes or even if we have to resort to a reload (which happens about 10% of the time). We have also NEVER lost data! (must be viable when it arrives) You can read many horror stories online about reloaded computers and lost programs and/or data and messed up mail with indifferent technicians. As with all jobs, we don't take shortcuts; we sometimes take a bit longer, we sometimes take a few extra steps, but we make sure it is all done right and your data is protected during the entire process.

THEY WERE VERY PROFESSIONAL AND FRIENDLY. THE SERVICE WAS FAST, BROUGHT MY COMPUTER IN ON 3\3\15 AND THEY CALLED THAT AFTERNOON THAT THE WORK WAS COMPLETED. THEY EXPLAINED EVERYTHING THEY HAD TO DO AND WHEN I PICKED UP MY COMPUTER THEY TOOK TIME TO TELL ME HOW TO PREVENT TROUBLE IN THE FUTURE. I PURCHASED THE WEBER ANTIVIRUS AND THE YOUNG MAN SPENT AT LEAST 35 MINUTES MAKING SURE THAT THE WARNINGS WERE AVAILABLE FOR ME TO SEE WHEN I WAS SEARCHING THE WEB. I CANNOT SAY ENOUGH GREAT THINGS ABOUT THEM. WILL USE NO ONE ELSE IN THE FUTURE.

They did a quick diagnosis. They advised me to get a new laptop and Susan made several suggestions, based on my needs and budget. When I chose one and ordered it, I brought it to the shop and they transferred what data could be retrieved from my thumb drive. All they charged me was $40.50 for shop labor. All the good advice and kind emails (I was in a panic) were free. They helped me with my trouble-ridden old laptop on several previous occasions. Their service has been consistently cheerful, prompt and affordable. I highly recommend them.

I was having problems with dialog boxes popping up almost every time I clicked on something on the web and emails had partially hidden advertisements. Your Computer Friends checked my computer for a virus, removed clutter and unwanted programs, updated JAVA/Adobe and reinstalled Mozilla. Susan and tech listened to me and were diligent in resolving the problems. Excellent service and work was done same day. Highly recommend.

It was excellent. I chose them because of their high scores on Angies' List, and I was steered well! They were responsive; I dropped it off shortly after the call. They could not resolve the problem that day, but they called to let me know the status and next steps. Sure enough, we spoke first thing the next morning; they had a few more things to do, but my PC was fixed and no data lost. The price was reasonable and the service excellent. I now consider them my IT resource.

They could not recover the lost data. I was in constant contact and informed of the trouble they were having. The woman I originally dealt with stated I did not supply all of the discs. However, I did supply all the discs. When loaded in the machine, it tells you what disc is being loaded. Disc #2 was corrupt not allowing the process to complete. Hence, the issue. She said I was missing a disc. I was not. They would all read, just not in sequence. I agreed they may have been numbered out of sequence which is why I have no problem paying for their time involved. The bigger issue stems from when my wife went to pick up the computer shortly after my last conversation with the store. My wife was at the counter and overheard the woman speaking ill of a customer to an employee, which just happened to be me. Even if it wasn't, publicly degrading or defamatory remarks toward a client or customer not only shows the character of the employee, but the culture of the business. I can't believe it to be an isolated incident.

Backup advice: DO NOT use HP backup solution, use the Windows back up software. When you use the HP software your disks MUST all be present. HP has a tag on the end and start of each disk that makes it impossible to skip a disk. It doesn't matter if the disks can be read individually, they are loaded in sequence only. So they must all be correctly labeled to work. Also, do not use CDs to backup up computers. Use an external hard drive. This advice will prevent this situation. It is true, we had a missing disk - disk number 2. All disks were labeled, all disks were labeled wrong. After 2 hours of technician time trying to make this work - it was unworkable. (we only billed one hour) What the customer heard was a morning meeting about jobs in the shop and our frustration over a JOB not a PERSON. We failed at this job. It was not an achievable task because we had multiple disks labeled wrong and one that was missing completely. Again, use windows as a backup program and an external hard drive. Problem solved.

The service was excellent. The service rep was prompt, courteious and professional. He configured our printer for wireless printing via bluetooh and made other changes to enable printing from laptops. He also checked system update packs on our PC to ensure all was in working order. Lastly, he made some recommendations for us to consider regarding WiFi printer or bluetooth adapter for another printer. We were very pleased with results and he had everything working and closed out in an hour.
Description of Work: YCF representative was requested to set printer for Bluetooth which had proved impossible for us to establish and to review issue we had been having with a Microsoft update pack.

I called the company first thing in the morning and received directions to their site, upon which I dropped of the unit about an hour and a half later. I suggested that I knew the problem was due to a malfunctioning power supply unit and we discussed the potential fee for that repair, if that was the source of the issue. I was able to pick up my tower on the same day, without any difficulty. The price I paid was the one given at estimate time and since they did not have to research my problem extensively, I was merely charged for parts and labor. No diagnostics. Susan was very friendly and helpful. She was my original point of contact and the only person I communicated with. The whole process was smooth, simple, and painless. I received the services I requested, without any haggling or upselling. I was very pleased...My memory of a computer gone bad were all distant, by the end of the day.
Description of Work: I had a power supply unit fail on my desk top several weeks ago. I did not immediately consider getting it fixed, due to unreliable vendors who had worked on various machines I had before. However, when I received an offer from PayPal for a discounted subscription to Angie's List, I took the plunge and performed a cursory search on computer repair services in the area. I felt more confident in taking my computer to a company that had received high marks from their previous customers. Otherwise, my tower might still have been sitting in the spare room for a very long time. The work was performed on site, at their office location, after my drop off.

Description of Work: I could not hook up one computer to my wireless network. John came out and found the problem in no time. Turns out my old computer could not use the newer technologies. An easy fix for John, but I never would have found it. John was here at the exact time he said he would and was very professional. After he fixed my problem he went ahead and cleaned my system. He was done in an hour and all is well. We would certainly go there again for computer issues.

They aquired remote access to my computer and found and repaired all the problems I had encountered. It was efficient and effective and I couldn't have asked for a better result. All within an hour of my initial call. We're new to this area and have used Angie's List for finding good reliable services and have not failed yet. This contact with "Your Computer Friends" is the latest example.
Description of Work: They performed a remote diagnosis and restoration of registry and printer driver files. I had been having trouble accessing a bank and an investment login for my monthly statements. In an attempt to repair these problems I clicked on a link that Microsoft Help had provided that charged me $35 to make the problem worse. After their "help" I couldn't print from my browser any more, in addition to the website login problems that I started with.

Flawlessly. Your Computer Friends staff speak "Non-Geek" English and teach non tech-savvy adults with analogies that make sense. They did what they said they would do, on time, and painlessly. They are a trustworthy resource that we would recommend to anyone.
Description of Work: We went to Your Computer Friends for an initial consultation. Susan greeted us and walked us through a painless process that educated us about computers and let her know what we needed. Your Computer Friends updated a little-used laptop and made it functional and got us our new desktop. They purchased the components, moved data from our old machine, then installed the components at our house. John spent an hour with us making sure that we knew how to use the new equipment and could access our email, bank accounts, etc. He returned later that evening when something did not work as we needed and fixed it on the spot. He even solved a dilemma remotely a week or so later! Both laptop and desktop computers work well and we are very happy with our experience.

So, I took the laptop in and again asked if I could have a technician look at it and give me an estimate on cleaning and repairs. They told me that it may be a few hours before the technician could get to it and then they would let me know. This was a laptop provided through an employer so needed an estimate first so we could decide if we wanted to pay for repair or have the IT dept at place of employment do repair. Only call we received was for user name and password so the technician could log into the laptop. Next call was to tell us it was finished and that our bill was $294. When the woman called to let us know it was finished and the cost, I told her they were supposed to call us first with an estimate before making any repairs. She remarked well he had to take it apart 3 different times and put back together and spent 3hrs on repairing it. I then repeated to her "I asked for an estimate to be given FIRST so we could decide if we just wanted our employers IT dept to do the repairs." She then said " I doubt that the kids at that IT dept could do the work correctly." I was so taken back by her remarks and unprofessionalism and completely felt that we were taken advantage of and cheated. She knows nothing about the IT dept and it was very rude for her to be so condemning. I went in to pick up the laptop the next morning and paid for the repair in full but was given no apology of any kind for their not following our request or for the rude, condescending, and unprofessional remarks. Instead of responding to why I was not given an estimate and opportunity to refuse service, she just got defensive.
Description of Work: Had syrup spilled on laptop. I called Computer Friends and asked if someone good look at it and provide us with an estimate for cleaning and nay repairs needed and they told me that they could. I was told the technician did find syrup inside, cleaned it out and did some repairs and that it took him 3 hours.

The client brought her laptop to our shop to remove approximately 4 ozs. of maple syrup from inside the higher end, dual core laptop. On arrival, the customer did not express any interest in an "estimate" and in fact explicitly stated to staff that we "do what you need to do, my husband is the head of his department at UNCW, they will pay the bill.” We removed 4 ounces of Mrs. Butterworth’s from this machine including cooked syrup on the motherboard and syrup up into the screen. (no pancakes) We did this in one day. It came in at 10:45, and was done before 5 PM. The charge was indeed $294.00. The machine did not start when it came in dripping syrup from the case. It went out the same day fully functional. Regarding the estimate argument; if the client was aware that the IT department at UNCW provides repairs for faculty, and she truly believed they would have serviced the machine with the same quality of repair and turnaround time, it makes little sense for her to have brought the machine to us to begin with. Since my estimate would never have been less than free anyway, it begs the question why bring it to me in the first place if cost was the driving decision? Regarding my supposed lack of professionalism; customers who have unexpected repair bills over maple syrup are not known to be happy customers. The stress of potential loss of data, equipment, time, money etc. does make for a difficult customer at times. Therefore we give them a lot of latitude. In this case, I should have set the record straight instead of letting it go. We could have saved a lot of unproductive time and the financial hit a review like this can cause my entire staff. Small Businesses have a tough enough time of it without people abusing the power of Angie’s List. I had a perfect score before this. To set this record straight - we had check-in approval to “do what you have to do” so I was not prepared for someone who eats the prime rib than says she could have had free hamburger at home. What do you say to that? I didn’t escalate this further by saying that I do know the skill set of my staff, of other repair shops and general processes at the IT department of UNCW. I’ve been hiring local college and university students for six years and I’m aware that maple syrup extraction is not a course on any curriculum. Additionally, the husband’s IT guy at UNCW used to work for me. The fact that the client has rated her service with a "B" for punctuality when the job was completed on the same day that she brought the machine in for service, as well as a "C" for quality when the machine arrived unable to boot at all and went back to the client fully functioning as if nothing had ever happened is indicative of the customer's inability to objectively rate her experience. Member, you are fired. You are an F customer. You got what you asked for: good service, fast turnaround, at a reasonable rate. Your anger is misplaced and unacceptable. I will talk with UNCW directly about the work done for them and if they feel this review is accurate.
