First he dropped off lumber, plywood and decking sheets and threw them in our storage shed on top of some stereo equipment stored there, breaking some of it. The plywood and decking lay flat on the wet ground-most of it still lays there now warped and rotted. The carpenter did a good job on the sections of the eaves he was allowed to replace. (Each time the "owner" came by, he made the crew working stop doing it right and cut corners on labor and materials.) Much of the rotted fascia was covered over instead of replaced. Two guys came in and primed the eaves, walked off the job never to be seen again. Next came the roofing. The shingles were delivered a week before the job was to start. He did not instruct the supply company where to leave the bundles (other than as close to the house as possible). They drove over the rain soaked yard and left ruts as wide as a truck tires in the front yard and killed the grass for over week. Same with the drip edging. It lay in the middle of the walk for over a week. Next, instead of the promised dumpster, a utility trailer was backed right over our azaleas up to the edge of the front window. The "first" roofing crew ripped off shingles, replaced one corner of rotted roof decking, rolled out the felt, started installing the drip edge, then walked off the job leaving a mess. Next day a giant blue tarp was nailed over the exposed roof, roofing nails were driven into the newly repaired eaves. The first roofing crew was to get $800 of the $3800 that we were being charged for the roof job. Three days later a crew of illegals showed up and "finished" the job. They laid the shingles only. The "owner" had them rip down the drip edging and he secreted it off-likely to return it for cash. The other two rotten corners of the decking that the carpenter showed me needed replacing, were covered over. The "owner" stopped the second crew from removing the vent flashing-the old flashing was left and the shingles run up OVER the flashing, so that the water would run down UNDER the shingles. For $3800, no drip edge, no flashing. To sum it up: The window job went okay after following them around making them reinsert the insulation and foam crevices. The "owner" stuck to his lies straight through when confronted. He took back 7 bundles of shingles and kept the cash, (confirmed with the supply company) and said not a word. Did not leave the paint behind that we paid for. Took a half case of caulk home-and then foam, deck adhesive and caulk THAT I BOUGHT to go behind them and finish the job. Swears that they replaced two corners of the decking (Three needed done, only one was.) Swears that no drip edge is needed though the roof pitch is nearly flat. Had the Mexicans come back with a tube of silicon and acted like that would stop the water from running down under the shingles. I'm in process of getting estimates for finishing the roof correctly.
Description of Work: I will refer to the construction company as "the owner" as in "the owner of the company", as he "supervised" the work himself. Originally the job was to repair only fascia, soffitt and frieze board and paint it (a brick house) with vinyl paint, and install new windows. Little did we know it was going to balloon into an eight thousand dollar job. The carpenter that "the owner" employed was an honest and hard working young Christian. (I doubt he'll be working for Pelican for long.) Instead of suggesting that we first have the roof done to stop the leaking that caused the wood rot on the eaves, the "owner" began the job and then later hired his own "crew" to do the roof repair. He measured for the windows himself but had to have his carpenter remeasure before ordering them. He demanded two-thousand dollars up-front for the windows. (despite having known my fianc ' for six years). This job drug on for almost two months.
