The job went very poorly from the start. First he demolished the spaces, then raised the price of the job by about $7000 with additional money for plumber and electrician- later again with need for an HVAC guy. The entire job was bid at $7500 and cost $30,000. He demolished the walls and ceiling without drop cloths to protect existing carpeting and flooring. All were ruined. Then he had trouble getting the permit as his diagrams were substandard and written on notebook paper. I had to go to the city building permit office and finsih the steps for the permit. Work was slow. He was 2 months behind and his workers were drinking beer in the basement as they are unsupervised. The doors were left unsecured and garbage (lunch bits and pieces) thrown about the yard, mixed with the unhauled away trash from construction that littered the expensive back deck. He was never on time and even once worked from 7pm to 3am! This house is inhabited.Doors were left open, rats moved into house and major extermination required. Installing pocket doors he cut preformed frames (ruined them) and headers on support walls. This would have been hidden and at a future date caused problems if I had not fired him before the permanent wall went up. He was over 2 months behind- dry wall finishing was HORRIBLE and I HAD TO REDO IT MYSELF!!!! After he was fired he found an attorney to harrass me pro bono for him. I had to go to court to get a lien put on the house removed- small claims, then mediation, then civil court. He tried to charge me an additional $3700 beyond the $12,500 he had received but the court only saw fit for $200 of the charges (why he got that is beyond me for it cost me $5000 to fix his damages). STAY AWAY FROM THIS GUY!!!! YOU WILL BE SORRY. During the court case he showed a picture inside a young lady's room in the house where he had no work and should not have been. Oh, FYI I had to hold his tools for he stole a flat screen TV from the house claiming it was part of his payment!!!! This was my experience- I can only say STAY AWAY!!!!!
Description of Work: The job was to convert a basement into an apartment of no more than 900 square feet per the building code. It included installing fire walls per code and reframing part of the living space to accomodate the city zoning requirements. Initially he was identified as contractor, but as he did not have a contractor license I had to assume this as the total amount exceeded the amount allowable for someone without the appropriate licensure. He was to measure and plan the spaces, repair a hole in a wall in the bedroom, and install some pocket doors.

Horrible. Larry is irresponsible when working in existing inhabited homes. He makes a mess and leaves it, trash and building materials are thrown on existing decks/around yard and not cleaned up for MONTHS. He loses the keys, making it necessary to change locks frequently and leaves doors wide open when he leaves (not unlocked but WIDE OPEN). Has no consideration for personal property- cigarettes put out on antique dressers. Leaves garage open- wide open and subjects personal property to thieves. He is not capable of working within building constraints. He was fired for multiple security violations (despite multiple requests and warnings/consequences for leaving doors open). He does not supervise his rough looking workers, and he himself works from 7pm to 1am in an existing house! His behavior is inappropriate in this type of situation. He does not understand or respect codes. Put a solid wall in front of electrical plugs, did not put up headers over doors and wall bowing, and has problems with inspectors that necessitated me calling the county to have a supervisor inspect house. He damages personal property- broke out the steps to attic, broken tiles, etc. In addition, he isn't capable of obtaining a permit without help- I had to finish the work for the permit and he had no idea there was a problem! He does not use a drop cloth and leaves debris from tear out all over without cleaning it up as he goes along. Draws on finished walls- big long marks and thinks nothing of it. I would not recommend him at all for an existing structure. I would not allow him to do any carpentry work for it is not within his realm of expertise. Larry is an ok drywall installer as long as it is a new construction with someone to clean up after him. He needs to be with a carpenter for his skills at this are not good. He should not be in a position to work with the county nor apply for permits on behalf of the homeowner based on my experience.
Description of Work: Fire walls and general drywall/pocket door installation for apartment attached to house. Scope of work was 1) limit space to 800 sq ft per city zoning regulation; 2) obtain permit for 2 hour fire wall installation; 3) draw overall design for apartment acceptable to New Hanover County building inspectors; 4) obtain permit for work. Consisted of drywall installation in attic where house touches apartment as well as all other communicating walls and ceilings. Builder assured me he had insurance as a company and that he would be in attendance personally with all workers. Refused to complete a formal written contract.
