Services we offer

New Home Construction, Large-Scale Remodeling and Additions, Historic Home Renovations, Whole House and Kitchen Remodeling, Replacement Windows, Roofing. We work primarily in Raleigh, in particular, North Raleigh and inside the beltline, Wake Forest, and some areas of Cary that are not too far south or west.

Services we don't offer

Since we specialize in larger projects, our company is geared to manage and perform more extensive, in-depth work. For this reason, we do not ordinarily do, nor are we as competitively priced, on smaller, short-term repair projects and service work. We do not do repair work unless it is part of a large-scale project. Some areas are further than it is convenient or cost-efficient for us to travel to given the type of long-term projects we do. We ordinarily do not work in Morrisville, Apex, the Jordan Lake area, Holly Springs, Fuquay Varina, or Chapel Hill.

The deck was constructed, but I noticed many problems with the work -- boards flipped up with the grain instead of face down, cracks forming in posts before they were even done with construction, spindles crooked and too short for the space in the railing; many gaps and knots in wood. They came and did some of the fixes. Then they had two other guys come to do the finishing. These two apparently did not know how to finish a deck. The deck is less than 10 months old and it looks like it closer to 5-6 years. The stain is almost gone, there was never any stain between the deck boards, none in the gaps by the hand rails, so the moisture has gotten in and warped most of the deck. In addition, the boards are so cupped that they hold water instead of shedding it off. I also have mold growing, which will have to be removed before it can be refinished. I contacted Billy Vaughn to see if he had anything to suggest or offer as compensation for the poor work, but he did not respond. I'll have to go to another contractor to have them almost completely redo the deck, including replacement of spindles, complete sanding and refinishing - the estimates put it at around $1200 - $2500 for these fixes. I'm not sure why he is getting such high reviews because he did some other work and that wasn't well done either. My guess is that if you have a small job, you get his "C" or "D" quality crews, so there is little attention to quality or detail.

Response from Vaughan Building & Remodeling Inc
PLEASE SEE THE REPORT POSTED BY THIS MEMBER DATED APRIL 8TH OF 2013 IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING COMPLETION OF THE PROJECTS. I had originally intended on posting the entire response that I sent to this member about the deck(even though member claims to have not gotten a response); but in the interest of everyone's time I will condense our response. This member did not want to use composite decking due to the cost of the material so instead chose to use pressure treated wood on their southern/western exposure deck on the rear of the home that has zero trees and offers no shade whatsoever for the home or the deck. No supplier of pressure treated WOOD will warranty the wood against anything other than rot; they do not warranty against distortion(warping, twisting, etc.) or splitting and cracking. However, due to the quality relationships we have with our vendors ...please read on. We did have some issues with the material used on the deck shortly after completion even though we used #1 grade everywhere it was available, and all the material we used on the deck was a higher grade than could be bought at your "box" stores. The member contacted us some weeks after completion of both projects with some complaints about distortion of some of the material on the deck. I contacted my vendor and we both met with the homeowner at the job site. We marked EVERY piece of material that the member had a complaint about, and although the vendor does not warranty pressure treated WOOD against distortion, the vendor supplied, and we replaced, every piece of wood with which the member had a complaint at no cost to the customer/member. As far as the staining goes, the member wanted to use a stain product from one of the big "box" stores but we suggested and did use a product from a well known paint/stain supplier that we believed to be a far superior product. If we were incorrect about the quality of that stain it was completely unintentional and again; we would have been happy to come out and take a look at a complaint had we been made aware of a problem prior to almost a year later. We did not hear another word about anything on either project until the last few weeks. The first e mail the member sent, which was borderline provocative and combative, was not eliciting a response but only letting us know they were not happy about the material distortion and they were going to use someone else to make repairs. WE WOULD HAVE HAPPILY COME BACK OUT TO TAKE A LOOK HAD THE MEMBER REQUESTED, OR EVEN ALLUDED TO, SUCH AND TRIED TO WORK SOMETHING OUT WITH THE VENDOR AND THE MEMBER. Then last week we received and even more combative e mail threatening the posting of a negative report, but again not really eliciting a response. However, we did respond to that e mail attempting to explain that we have no control over the reaction of wooden decking components over time to exposure from sunlight, rain, wind, and temperature extremes. Again, we would have happily gone back out had the member requested such, but due to the vituperative, combative tone of the member's e mail, we agreed that it would probably be best if the member did go with another contractor in an attempt to get satisfaction. We try very hard to gain, and keep, our customer's trust and confidence as, in our opinion, that trust and confidence is one of THE most important aspects of our business and is the reason that we end up working for the same customer's over and over again. We regret that this particular customer feels the way they do about their deck and wish them the best of luck with this, and any future, projects they undertake with other contractors.

I was completely blind sided by this review. I have no recollection of the conversation that this member is referring to and I went back through my notes, schedule, and quote file to the beginning of May and could not find anything. I am not saying that this member and I did not talk or she did not send me an e mail; however, if she did, I have no evidence of anything. If we did a quote that came up with the figure she is referencing in her review, we no longer have a quote. We purge the quote file periodically just to tidy things up and we have nothing referencing this member or their project. I speak to a lot of people on a daily basis, many times while I am driving and do the best I can to take notes and respond back to ALL calls. If this member did in fact contact us about her project and it slipped through the cracks, we apologize. We value every opportunity we are given and take no opportunities for granted. We are thankful for the business opportunities we are given and are very fortunate that we remain and have been busy and we attribute this to the fact that we do appreciate and respond to every opportunity we are given to the best of our efforts and deal with all of our customers with honesty and integrity all the while producing a top quality job. We wish this member luck with their project.

Billy came and listened to what we wanted done. He took measurements. He figured the job then emailed it to us. We agreed on doing the job and he gave me a starting date. He kept in contact almost daily and if we had questions he responded. Things moved along and we passed all the inspections no problems. The estimate was on target.
Description of Work: We had the attic finished by Bill Vaughan and were pleased with the work and timely manner in which things were done.the work crews were very considerate and professional. We would highly recommend him again.

Billy, along with all of his crews/sub-contractors, are pleasures to work with. They are all extremely competent, polite to a fault and always ready with a worthwhile suggestion when asked. After the initial estimate, the costs were carefully and incrementally managed bringing the final to within 2% of the estimate. This further indicates Billy's extensive knowledge of his trade. We have worked with a good number of contractors at various locations and Billy is, by far, at the top of the list.
Description of Work: Billy and his team added substantial value to our home by building us a beautiful 25' x 35' 2-story addition. This space consists of a fully insulated shop and utility closet on the first level with a large recreation room and full bath on the second. Both areas are brightly lit both with artificial as well as natural light. The upper level is a conditioned space with under eave storage and lovely laminate flooring (our choice for durability). Two large dormers provide space for the bath on one side and on the other side a tucked away work space. Natural light is provided with large double windows on two sides. The shop below features two single car garage doors as well as a regular entry door for easy access on two sides. With such large entries it is an easy matter to move equipment or lumber in and out. We decided that, since everything was moving along so well, to insulate, sheetrock and paint this space as well. It is a very high class "shop", indeed. With a laundry tub and hot water this will provide us a great space for any job. (As we keep honey bees this will be the perfect space for honey extraction and bottling.) The exterior features a brick foundation, vinyl siding and textured shingles; all matching the existing house perfectly. There are faucets, electrical outlets and exterior lighting on all sides. On the east side of the shop we brought up a gravel drive for access from our existing concrete pad to help with rainwater infiltration.

Billy came to our home to give me an estimate on replacing 2 to 4 windows and estimates for two other upcoming projects. The house is 17 years old and we moved in about two years ago. Two windows never locked and were a pain to raise and lower. This was pointed out during our home inspection at the time of purchase and we'd had 2 other contractors try to repair the windows. Can't do it... we were told. They'd have to be replaced. When Billy looked at them, he asked to borrow a screwdriver since he'd only come equipped with a clipboard, tape measure and pen. He was able to fix the darn things! He pretty much took the sliding mechanism apart on one window in order to fix it, but he did it. He also showed me a sticker in the frame with the MFR part numbers and let me know my windows had a lifetime warranty. So, even if they break again in the future, it shouldn't cost me anything but labor to fix. Billy was honest enough to cut himself out of the work he'd have gotten replacing windows for me and didn't even charge me. I did send him an Amazon Gift Card later as a thank you and he'll definitely get my business in the future.

We contacted three builders for an estimate: the first asked a few questions over the phone and gave us a ballpark estimate without coming out to meet us, look at the lot, etc; the second came out and met us, asked what we wanted to do, and gave us an estimate; and then we met Billy. He came out and asked what we were interested in doing and then proceeded to get a detailed response from us as to what our intentions were as to the use of the building. From there, Billy made suggestions and gave us ideas to consider. We hired him because he obviously knows his business and cares enough to ensure that his customers are happy with the end result. Without Billy's numerous suggestions and ideas, we would have been very dissatisfied with the garage we initially thought we wanted. My husband rarely deals with home projects, and Billy was very easy to work with and was quick to explain anything I wasn't sure of or help me in the decision-making process. I actually called Billy while he was speaking to the lady in the permit office to ask him to hold off because my husband and I were having second thoughts about how we wanted to proceed (attached instead of detached). It didn't faze Billy at all. He came out and walked with us through our house and gave us several options as to how to work in an attached garage (we have several acres but limited area adjacent to the house for attaching a garage because of septic, well, etc.). In the end, we decided to proceed with the detached garage--a very wise decision given our new living space/garage. Billy's team did an excellent job: hardworking, polite, dependable, and professional. His subcontractors also did an excellent job. We made several changes throughout the process (upgrade to hardiplank siding, HVAC system instead of hotel-type unit, recessed door instead of regular door, etc. Billy was very accommodating and honest in telling us his thoughts on our suggestions. We won't hesitate to use Billly again in the future. We haven't moved our furnishings into the upstairs yet as I'm taking care of final touches myself: painting, floor install, etc. However, we can't wait!!! The garage has already been put to good use for storing our lawn equipment and cars and providing a good workspace. Thanks, Billy, you're number 1 in our book! We contacted Billy in September 2012 and the project was completed the end of April 2013.
Description of Work: Built detached 26 x 40 foot multi-car garage with upstairs living space. This was a from the ground up project starting in undeveloped plot of land and concluding with pre-finished upstairs (installation of drywall) and HVAC system.

The construction took 9 months from the ground up. The project went very smoothly. There is no "story" to tell except that it was a delightful, easy, experience.
Description of Work: Vaughan Building added an 1,100 sq. ft., ADA compliant, downstairs Master suite to our 28 year old home in Crosswinds in North Raleigh, NC. This included a new outside entrance and a brick "disguised" handicapped ramp. Vaughan Building did a new entrance with ramp, a gathering room, a new guest powder room, a new laundry room, a full Master suite with walk-in closet and a large double vanity Master bathroom with curbless, no glass shower. The best review I can give you is to let you know that our home will be on the Raleigh Remodelers Tour on April 27 and April 28, 2013. Billy Vaughan did a phenomenal job and was so easy to work with on every aspect of this renovation. His crew was the hardest working team I've ever seen and very, very, neat. Please feel free to come by on April 27 or April 28 to see for yourself their marvelous work, inside and out. I give Billy Vaughan the highest recommendation.

I originally asked for an estimate on a large remodel. The price quoted was outside of my budget. Billy ended up doing the mud sill and framing in the closet for $1750. I am getting a lot of the work done that he quoted me for a much lower price. One thing I've been miffed about is that Vaughan removed the light in my closet by having his workers cut the wires and stuff them up in the ceiling. I will now need to ask an electrician to climb up in my attic, locate the wires, and cut a new hole in the ceiling of my closet. He said he wasn't going to mess with doing this (even thought his quote included the light) because he was concerned that my walls were plaster. My house doesn't contain plaster but he never got far enough to discover this fact... he just took the light out and moved on. Overall he was nice and punctual but just seemed to want to get me out of his hair once he realized it was a small job, I could be wrong.

Response from Vaughan Building & Remodeling Inc
Originally this job was going to be a larger project and our role was scaled back quite a bit; but that had no impact on our desire to help the member. A good example of this would be the fact that even though the member chose to act as their own contractor and select an electrical and plumbing subcontractor of their choosing to use for the project; I still pulled all the permits not only for the member but for their electrical/plumbing sub as well in order to save everyone a trip, time, and confusion. The day we performed the work on the wall mentioned we did remove an old pull chain style light bulb fixture because it was in the way of doing the requested work. I pointed out that we were going to put it up in the attic and that the electrician the member was using would need to install it back in a box at a location of the member's choice when they were doing any of the other work in the house. Had we been using our subcontractors we would have them install the light. We try to look at every job as an opportunity to help our customers, regardless of the size of the job, and enjoy helping people. We often times answer questions and try to give advice and direction to those people whose homes we enter to look at jobs not knowing if we are going to get those jobs. We enjoyed meeting and working with this member, regret the member felt this way, and wish them good luck with any future work they decide to do on their home.

I had interviewed 4 or 5 other contractors until I settled on Billy and his team. He seemed to understand exactly what I wanted, had no trouble working from my plans or from taking direction from a woman. In fact, we settled into a comfortable understanding which seem to move the projects along. He was more than willing to do whatever we needed, or to allow us to finish portions ourselves (which helped in keeping the budget down). We now have a beautiful room with great light any time of the day and the amount of storage triples what we use to have around the trusses. No sooner did we finish the attic remodel, than we began the deck. This was done in just a little over 2 weeks including demolition, inspections and construction (including installation of an exterior duplex) and clean up. We were very impressed with the fact that both jobs had little physical impact to our property, or the neighborhood during construction and they cleaned up after themselves after each day's work. We are very pleased with both projects, and cannot wait until the next one - which we will most certainly use Vaughan Building & Remodeling, Inc.
Description of Work: We had Vaughan Building do 2 projects for us - one was a attic remodel, taking a dark truss-filled area, and opening it up into a vaulted room with plenty of storage and lots of windows/lights. The only complaint that I could have would be with his electrical sub-contractor who put the entire room on one breaker (8 duplexes, 2 track lights, one ceiling fan/light, 4 closet lights). This was not well thought out, and unacceptable to us, so I had them come back and split the room onto 3 breakers. However, they responded promptly and completed the job to our satisfaction. All other punch list items were completed in a timely manner. The second job was a new deck on the back of the house. We made several revisions as we move through this project, and his team fielded these without problems. The new deck is solid, attractive and a great addition to our house.

I discussed the job with several contractors before giving the job to VBR. Billy was a consummate professional and I felt comfortable with him from the start. He kept in contact with us throughout the project, whether it was to provide an update or to gauge our satisfaction with the workmanship. His sub-contractors were friendly and had an outstanding work ethic. Our master bath shower and the wainscoting in our dining room look terrific. We couldn't be more pleased with the craftsmanship, and we're delighted that the project came in under budget. I value proactive communication and Billy delivered. He called during business hours and emailed after business hours. Contractors can be hit and miss, even on Angie's List. VBR has restored my faith. I will recommend their services with enthusiasm, in this forum and beyond.

We worked with Billy on some very extensive and detailed plans to begin. Finding vendors who could meet our custom needs, especially for cabinets etc. Billy and his crews worked very hard, and did not stop until we were satisfied. We have worked with several contractors, but Billy would not quit until all the final details were covered. In one case we could not find a replacement threshold for door in the finish that we wanted. Eventually Billy found a custom fabricator who could refinish the exisiting to our satisfaction. In another case we had a request for quarter sawn oak bathroom cabinets, which proved also to be difficult to eventually secure. The details were in the planning. We made our project list and worked from that throught the final punch list to the end. Everyone thing was completed at the end of the project, which is more than I can say for others that we have worked with. We have found it common getting the last bit of the project buttoned-up is the hardest, if at all. I would strongly recommend you talk with Billy and see for yourself.

Description of Work: We used VAUGHAN BUILDING AND REMODELING, INC. They replaced some rotted wood, installed a new window, hung a door, replaced siding around the chimney chase, whole bunch of small projects like that. They also gave me a quote for a bathroom remodeling.

I called Mr. Vaughan after reading the reviews on Angie's List. We agreed on a time to meet at the house to discuss the project. At the appointed time, Mr. Vaughan did not show up or call. I was surprised since the reviews I read here were so good.
Description of Work: We are planning on adding an attached garage to our house.

Response from Vaughan Building & Remodeling Inc
Member and I did have an appointment scheduled for Friday, October 12, 2012. I sincerely apologize for not making the appointment and for any inconvenience this may have caused him. We strive to always meet our obligations and to be conscientious in notifying our customers if any scheduled appointment needs changing. The Member and I traded phone calls a few times a week or two prior to setting this appointment and scheduled it approximately one week in advance, in order to accommodate his schedule. Ordinarily, our appointments are within a couple of days of initial contact. We rarely miss appointments and even less frequently fail to call if we need to change the time. In this case, we had a minor emergency on another job (an Angie's List customer), to which I was attending and which obviously was taking my full attention. Not an excuse for not calling. However, I do admit that I am human. I pride myself on being extremely accessible, and if the Member tried to contact me, I never got the call or voice mail. Had I received a call or voice mail, I would have absolutely called back, and if at all possible, would have done everything I could to make the appointment and make up for any inconvenience. We sincerely appreciate every opportunity given to us by all our customers and prospective customers and value their time and respect their scheduling needs. Our company has a history of high quality customer service which we will always make every effort to maintain. We wish the Member the best of luck with his project.

Billy Vaughan came in under budget, and delivered to us a stunningly beautiful, high-quality, massive (18' by 18') kitchen and living room (24' by 18') that is truly functional, comfortable and livable space. We could not be happier with our "new" house. Our construction job took three months and while it was not without its problems -- some of which is fodder for a "now that we're looking at it in hindsight that was absolutely hilarious" letter to our friends come Christmas card time -- Billy proved to be a highly skilled, capable and knowledgeable contractor with integrity. When problems arose, he worked diligently and honorably to address them. His subcontractors do excellent work at excellent prices. An example: I brought in three hardwoods contractors (found on Angie's List) to provide estimates for our living room and kitchen, and Billy brought in his hardwood sub. Billy' subcontractor was the only contractor who suggested that the existing site-finished hardwood could be salvaged. The three contractors I found on Angie's List wanted to rip it out as being unusable. Billy's sub came in $1,500 cheaper than the lowest of the three other bids. And the floor is just glorious. People are stunned when we tell them that the floor is a mixture of 26-year-old existing and new hardwoods because it is completely seamless. Billy has a fine eye for details -- when people see our kitchen, they rave about things such as molded accents on pillars, and the beautiful transom window that gave me a usable wall in my kitchen while bringing in light and providing privacy. That was Billy, I tell them. That was his idea. Billy came in under budget. Because I had heard horror stories about construction projects going amok financially, we had allocated $10K for overruns. When those overruns never materialized, we used the extra money to have Billy replace all of the windows in our house, have his landscape designer redo our side yard and installed shutters throughout the house. We definitely would hire Billy again, without hesitation, to perform any additional remodeling or construction projects on our home.
Description of Work: We've lived in our 1500-square-foot Cape Cod home since 1995 and have spent the last three years painfully weighing whether to build an addition -- giving us the additional space we desperately needed -- or whether to move. I asked five general contractors -- whom I found on Angie's List -- to visit our house to review the proposed work and provide estimates. At the time, my husband and I thought we needed a playroom / family room built onto the back of the house. Four of the five contractors came out and took notes as I described my vision of the new space. Billy was the ONLY contractor who stopped me mid-spiel to say, "Wait a minute. Before you tell me what you want, tell me what you don't like about your house. What's wrong with it?" I began describing its many shortcoming -- we lacked adequate cabinet and countertop space in the kitchen, we didn't have enough storage, our formal dining room was essentially dead space that collected dust when it wasn't being used 363 days of the year, etc. Billy listened carefully and then said, "Ma'am, with all due respect, the new space you're saying you want won't fix any of those problems." He then went on to say that if HE had the problems I described, this is what he would do: Remove the wall dividing the small living room from the small dining room and create a great room, and push out the side of the kitchen to double its size, creating a huge eat-in kitchen. His vision was a completely novel idea -- something my husband and I would never have considered on our own. Four of the five contractors provided legitimate bids. (We discarded one estimate when it came in the form of a three-bullet-point email). Of the four contractors submitting legitimate, line-item, detailed bids, Billy was the least expensive by tens of thousands of dollars. And he was the only contractor who seemed to bring vision and outside-the-box critical thinking to our home's problems and potential solutions.

Our Master suite is still a work in progress but we seem to be ahead of schedule despite the rain we had in April. Billy Vaughan is a pure joy to work with. His crew is the best. I've been in real estate for 30 years and have never seen a cleaner work site. The crew is meticulous and they "measure twice and cut once". Billy is great about offering advice on detail and keeping costs at bay while being pleasant and easy to get along with. He seems just as willing to ask your opinion and not force his tastes on anyone. (He has excellent taste). The overall work on this project is some of the best I've seen. I rarely write reviews and yet did not hesitate for a moment to write this one or to highly recommend this building company. They can do anything you need done in your home. I have told Billy Vaughan that he is more than welcome to use our home as an example of his outstanding work.
Description of Work: We put a downstairs Master suite on our two story house. We followed ADA guidelines as we are getting older and it is conceivable that we will, at some time in the future, use walkers or wheelchairs. The Master suite included a large walk-in closet; a large bathroom with split vanities and a walk-in curbless shower with seat and double shower heads; a utility/laundry room; a new guest powder room and a beautiful lobby and sun room. We also have a handicapped ramp leading to a new porch and a new deck in the backyard. Our work started in mid April and we are nearing completion. The painters start tomorrow.

We work primarily in Raleigh, in particular, North Raleigh and inside the beltline, Wake Forest, and some areas of Cary that are not too far south or west.
