Response from Vaughan Building & Remodeling Inc
The job that the member wanted help with was a very small project. We explained to the member during our initial conversation that we are not really set up for small "handy man" type projects; but that we would would still be happy to take the time to come by and take a look and offer any advice or help that the member requested. After looking at the project, and submitting a price, the member expressed their thought that the price was too high. We responded that we understood their concern and explained that it is difficult for us to be competitive on really small projects with our business model and recommended that they call a "handy man" service that could probably send one or two men that could take care of all the different aspects of their project and that it would most likely save them money, just as we mentioned initially. We even cautioned the customer to check on the insurance coverage of whoever they decided to work with on their project as a lot of smaller "handy man" type contractors may not have worker's compensation and general liability coverage if someone were to get hurt or their property damaged. We are not belittling "handy man" type contractors, and freely admit, that sometimes they are a better fit for certain types of projects. We regret they felt compelled to post any negative comments and feel that we did everything we could to help them with the project. We are always honest and up front with the customers we meet whether we get the job or not and wish them the best of luck with the project.

We did receive a voice mail message from someone within the past 7-10 days, presumably this member. I listened to the message as best as I could while driving in Triangle traffic and had difficulty understanding the content of the message. I intended to listen to the message again later while in a safer, and more conducive atmosphere for listening but, unfortunately the message got deleted. We received no other type of contact from anyone during this same time period mentioning leaving a message and not getting a response. We apologize to this member, if indeed this member is the author of the message in question, and apologize that the member received no response. We wish this member the best of luck.

Description of Work: I do not live and Raleigh and as an investor needed to have a contractor look at investment property to let me know what I might be getting myself into as far as remodeling and updating before I made my final offer. I found Billy's name on Angie's list and decided to give him a try. He answered my call personally every time I called, showed up on time, and walked through 16 condos that I was looking at. He spent an almost two hours with the realtor and myself on a cold, rainy day. He pointed out plumbing considerations, electrical things I needed to consider, code violations etc. That is going over and above! I will definitely use him to do the work for me when I purchase the properties.

Description of Work: When Billy was contacted about giving a quote on a home addition and a new deck, he immediately followed up to arrange a time to come and discuss the project. He was able to adjust his schedule to fit our needs and delivered a quote within 2 days of our meeting. I was very impressed with his responsiveness and punctuality. He was very professional and I felt that he would treat our home like it was his own.
We contacted a large number of contractors (8 to 10) and had in-person interviews with many of them. We were very impressed with Billy from the beginning of the process and we are thankful to have been able to work with him on our renovation. Our goals were to find a Contractor who was experienced in all aspects of construction, was easy to communicate with, and most importantly would be open to allowing us to do sweat equity where we could to maximize our budget. Billy stood out from the pack of other contractors because of his experience in building homes (not just doing renovations), his openness to allowing us to be hands on, and his friendly and genuine demeanor. We designed the renovation ourselves and Billy was extremely supportive to us by way of rough estimates that allowed us to adjust the scope of the project to match our budget. Once we finalized our design decisions, Billy was quick to get his subcontractors on the job and we made quick progress with getting the project completed. We felt good with all of his crews that were on the job. We were extremely impressed with his carpentry crew (Yo Yo is the lead) and his mason crew (Jayford is the lead), as they took on the unique challenges that some of our design details presented. Billy was very transparent with his billing, giving us all receipts and working in a very fair manner. We liked how he would make draws as he went, but only after the work was complete, unlike some contractors who required large percentages in advance. We are very happy with how our renovation turned out and very appreciative of Billy’s skills to get us there while working with us.
Description of Work: Billy’s work: 120 SF addition of our existing family room including vaulting the existing ceiling 200 SF screened porch 80 SF deck addition 72 SF covered front porch Converted our garage doors from a two door to single door configuration Replaced front windows and main entry door Siding work, replacing old Masonite siding with fiber cement board Gutters to whole house Painted complete exterior of house Our sweat equity work: Renovation design and documentation Tree removal Demo of existing deck Demo of family room interior and exterior back wall Construction of handrails on screened porch and deck Interior painting, trim, and installation of flooring in family room addition

I did not end up using Mr. Vaughan for reasons completely unconnected to him, his estimate, or my faith in the work he would do. He is an absolute professional. His estimate was thorough, his personality excellent, his responsiveness absolutely beyond reproach. He was always available by phone throughout the estimate process and was responsive to phone messages. I would absolutely recommend him to anyone looking for a gentleman and a professional.

Working with Billy was a pleasant experience. He and his crew were very professional and did a great job installing the french doors. The great room was very dark and we wanted to have a view of the pool and professional landscaping outside. Billy was able to work me into his schedule before the landscapers came out to put in the hardscape patio along the back of the house. Overall, I am very happy with the work Billy and his crew perfomed. The reason I gave them a lower grade for price is because the original estimate was approximately $3800 ($4000 with a $200 discount for angie's list)... unfortunately, the bill I received once the project was for $4700 (not including the $300 I paid for the door hardware and exterior light). I would use Billy again in the future, however, I would make sure there was better communication regarding costs.
Description of Work: Billy and his crew removed a fireplace in the great room and installed french doors.

home inspection

I requested this inspection as part of the process when I was preparing my home for sale. In today's market, it's best to have everything tip-top so there are no questions in a buyer's mind that everything is okay. In addition to updating with new carpet, new paint, etc. I decided to have the crawlspace inspected. This is an area that has always concerned me as I have had lots of plumbing problems in other houses and now live in fear of leaks, drips, etc. I didn't want to find out from a buyer's inspector that there was a problem that might jeopardize the sale. Billy was prompt, courteous, and very thorough in his inspection. His report was detailed and contained lots of photos of both what was right as well as items that needed attention. I was very satisfied with his services. As it turns out, I actually had a problem that could have become quite expensive if it had not been caught in time. As part of my property updates, I had just replaced a downstairs toilet. Well, it turns out that the wax ring didn't seat properly and there was a minor leak around the drain. Billy pointed this out and I was able to address immediately, before any damage was done. Had this continued, it could have led to water damage and rot, not to mention scaring off a potential buyer. He also noted that I needed to replace insulation hangers for some of my insulation that was drooping underneath. Now I can rest assured that if I ever get a buyer, there won't be anything to jeopardize the sale.
Description of Work: Inspected crawlspace of a home being prepped for market.

We found Billy Vaughan's company via Angie's List and chose him based on the favorable reviews that were posted. The entire experience with Billy and his team was excellent. I cannot speak highly enough of him and the approach he takes as a contractor. He is extremely honest, courteous, and professional. These qualities are also present in his project manager (Mike) who is extremely talented and performs many of the work tasks himself (Mike constructed our built-ins, installed all trim work, helped with framing, etc.). We also noticed that members of the various subcontractor crews also spoke very highly of Billy, from the carpet guys, to the tile guys, to the surveyors, all agreeing that he was one of the best, most honest guys in this business. Billy works on a "cost-plus" contracting basis meaning that the cost of the job is simply the cost of raw materials and labor plus his contractor fee (i.e., profit). Four invoices were prepared throughout the project and each one documented (via receipts and other documents) the expenses he incurred for the project down to the penny. There are no hidden costs this way. With this documentation, we were able to track where we stood in terms of budgeted (from Billy's initial estimate) versus actual costs for every component of the project. For nearly ALL project components, Billy's overall cost came in at or under (sometimes significantly so) his initial estimate, which brings me to another praise for VBR: many contractors present "low-ball" initial estimates to get potential clients excited about the project and financially committed, and then later find things here and there that were "unexpected" and lead to higher costs. Billy takes the exact opposite approach, which is much more responsible and in the best interest of the homeowner. His estimates present the "worst-case" scenario for each item so that the homeowner can be relatively assured that the cost will not be MORE than the estimate. Along the way we enjoyed getting to know Billy, Mike, and some of the subcontractors that came through the house. Again, I highly recommend VBR if you are thinking about any remodeling or home addition project.
Description of Work: Vaughan Building and Remodeling (VBR) constructed a 320 square foot bonus room on the first floor of our existing home. The new bonus room includes a full bath with tile, custom built-in window bench seat with storage, and a custom built-in entertainment center. VBR also removed our old deck and constructed a new larger deck (approx. 12x12) that is positioned 2 feet lower to adjoin to the new structure's outside entryway, as well as a second lower-level deck (approx. 10x12). Finally, VBR performed a modest reconfiguration on the interior of our existing home by adding a small wall and french doors (w/glass windows) to enclose our home office.

I got Vaughan Builders from Angies List. I contacted Billy Vaughan and was impressed with him from the onset. He was always responsive. If I couldn't reach him by phone, he promptly returned calls. He was very knowledgeable and had many ideas to deliver what I needed while saving money. He met with me at the proposed tanning salon site several times. He was always good natured and friendly. His bid for the work was very fair. Eventually, problems with the landlord prevented the construction of the salon. Still, he regularly called me to keep updated and to encourage me. Judging from what I know of his work, I know he would have done a stellar job. If I have the opportunity to use Vaughan Builders in the future, I'll do so in a heartbeat!

Excellent job! Billy Vaughan and his crew arrived on time (a bit early actually) and were very friendly and professional. The work was very high quality. Instead of replacing the door they were able to repair it and did an excellent job. Good job on cleanup.
Description of Work: Removed a double door, siding & decking to access rotten wood. Replaced part of the rim joist, repaired rot in door framing, flooring and sheathing. Flashed entire length of deck and built a custom pan to go under the door (to protect the wood underneath the door). Reinstalled the door and decking. Installed new cedar siding and weather impervious trim around the door. Caulked properly and cleaned up.

Work was done quickly and professionally. Workers showed up on time and were very friendly and efficient. They took extra care to avoid making unnecessary mess when removing the ceiling section. Despite the fact that we learned that our house had some unusual construction elements, they were able to move the light and patch the ceiling perfectly. Work on the 3 dormer windows went fine and all siding was replaced just like new.
Description of Work: Repaired 3 leaking dormer windows. Also relocated a dining room light fixture with no overhead access. Required cutting out a 4x4 section of the ceiling, relocating box, and preparing a patch.
