Mr. Smith installed a ceiling fan and performed other 'handyman' tasks on March 15, 2017 . Although the other items seem fine, he made a potentially life threatening mistake installing the fan. About 2 months after installation the fan fell. I never even had the fan on high speed and it didn’t make any noises to indicate there was a problem. It just fell and could have killed one of my feline kids who sleep under it often. We contacted him to tell him the issue and he immediately said he knew it was the ceiling fan box. I knew he had said this because he, like most humans, do not want to take responsibility for a mistake. He, however, came over a couple days later, looked at the fan and the box that was still in the ceiling. He saw that the plastic around the screws was broken and said he was correct that it is the box. I asked him why he couldn’t look at the box before installing it to see if it would hold the ceiling fan or to see if it was deficient in any way. He said it is not his fault and there’s no way to know when a box will fail. When he said this he became verbally belligerent and since I didn’t have the knowledge to counter, I acquiesced. I, however, still wasn’t satisfied. Nevertheless, my girlfriend had him come over for some quotes on other items. I told her he will not hang another fan, but maybe he can do decent carpentry. He gave us some very high prices-$120 to put in an attic fan thermostat and $360 for pressure washing the back deck. She asked how long it would take for the thermostat and said would take 20 minutes. She asked him why the prices of these 2 items were so high. He became angry again and said, “I’m not the fella for you.” I could only imagine how angry he would have been in person. How dare a woman question his prices. Shocking! :) After the fan fell, I had a handy neighbor come over and she saw the problem immediately when SHE got on a ladder and looked at the inside of box. It says, “For FIXTURE SUPPORT”. My non-professional handy neighbor could see this, so he should have known to look. He either didn’t know to look or was just in a hurry and didn’t care enough. She said the engraved label is the first thing you look at to determine if the box is strong enough to support a ceiling fan. She said manufacturers have them labeled, “For Ceiling Fans” or a similar statement if it is meant for ceiling fan use. In addition, my NON-PROFESSIONAL handyman female neighbor said you really should only use metal boxes for ceiling fans to be absolutely certain it is safe. After she installed a new ceiling fan, I took pictures of his unprofessional work, texted him a nice note to see if he would reimburse me for the ceiling fan cost of $187.57. On July 10, he replied to our request for a refund with “sounds good.” He didn’t pay. We asked again. He didn’t respond. [*** Link removed ***] $119 plus tax of 7.2%=127.57 plus labor of $60(He charged $540 for 9 tasks). Total refund: $187.57
