Had I first read the one negative review for this provider, I probably would not have selected them; luckily, I didn't. We bought a home in Asheville with a huge great room with a Southern exposure. When the area rugs were lifted, we were horrified. The cherry flooring was very dark in some places, the original color in others, and totally bleached out in yet other places. Quite simply, the flooring was an unanticipated disaster. We found Carolina Kitchen and Floors by Googling "certified hardwood inspectors" for Western North Carolina. We ended up speaking to a man who is an acknowledged expert in his field, Donovan Norton. He inspected the flooring and explained how it had gotten in such awful condition. In essence, what he did was educate us, not try to sell us; and he took his time doing so. He gave us a two-part estimate--one to sand and refinish the floors, and one in case some of the wood was damaged so badly it had to be replaced. The sanding and refinishing job was incredibly difficult and painstaking. The firm was able to sand the floors well enough that it was unnecessary to replace any of the wood, thus saving us thousands of dollars--and a lot more angst. The end result is that we have floors that now look stupendous. In addition, Donovan kept in constant contact with us (even during a personal medical emergency) to keep us up-to-date on everything that was being done. We would recommend this firm without reservation to anyone who wishes to work with true professionals who are trustworthy, responsible, and take absolute pride in their work.

Description of Work: I was going to use this provider to refinish my hardwood floors. On the day I was going to sign the contract, I was told that they would need a 100% deposit. The standard for this kind of work is 50%. I have never been asked to pre-pay for labor. It made me uncomfortable. I spoke with the owner who said he had too much trouble with people not paying when the work was finished. I believe, and this has been confirmed by many providers I have used since 1970 when I first became a homeowner, that if someone comes to your home, works hard, and does a good job, a homeowner will pay them. Then I began thinking about the quality of work they are doing if so many people don't pay up. In any case, I used Angie's list and found someone with 27 good reviews.
