Over the summer, my condensate line for my AC unit got clogged, and the way my furnace is installed, I had to cut the 3" PVC exhaust pipe that comes out of my propane furnace in order to clean out the condensate line. Instead of repairing the PVC line myself, I wanted to make sure the exhaust PVC pipes were sealed correctly so I decided to call Gentry to replace the fittings. They sent Will out to my house, and he quoted $390 plus $79 diagnostic fee = $469. Seriously? $469 for 3 PVC fittings (about 1 foot long) and about 15 minutes of work. Absolutely ridiculous. I turned down the repair and will do it myself. What an incredible ripoff. $469 for 15 min of work and $25 worth of PVC. Will kept telling me over and over again that he had to charge what was "in the book" instead of time and materials. And I thought Gentry was supposed to be one of the best HVAC companies in AVL. I do not recommend, complete ripoff. Stay away.

In your review your made the statement: "I wanted to make sure the exhaust PVC pipes were sealed correctly". Our charge to make this repair and to take on the liability for your venting system is $291.00 (not the 390.00 that you falsely mentioned in your review) We are unable to upload a copy of the service Invoice that you signed showing this amount. If you had a splinter in your hand and went to a surgeon to have it removed, I am sure that the cost would be significantly higher that if you removed it yourself. While we really work hard to please all of our customers and truly value our Angie's Lists clients, I am not ashamed to say that our company is not the cheapest game in town. We charge a reasonable amount for our services which affords us the ability to have the top rated technical professionals in our industry and a highly skilled customer support department to be available to our customers 24/7. Our policy is to provide our customers with a thorough diagnosis of the needed repairs and then give them the up-front cost to make those repairs. This up-front cost is based on that national average price for each repair. We believe that time and materials pricing is not only unprofessional, but an unfair way to charge for our services. A customer should pay the same price for a repair regardless of the skill level or speed of the service technician. In addition to being untruthful about the amount we quoted for the repair you requested, you also failed to mention that we allowed you to use a coupon for the diagnostic fee that you purchased a year ago. I humbly request that in the future you at least be honest when you are providing reviews on a service provider. We make our living trying to serve customers on a daily basis and we rely on customers to at least give other people a truthful representation of the services we provide. We noticed that our electric bills were very very high this winter and felt the heat pump wasn't working like it should. We called Gentry, they replaced a part and then we continued to notice an increase in our monthly heating bill and that the system wasn't working well. It was then diagnosed that the heat pump had a coolant leak and needed a coil replaced. We called Gentry at the end of May and my husband was told that it would take 3-4 days to get the part in and that they would have to wait to set up a time until they received the part. My husband didn't hear back from anyone so he called again and this time he was told it would take 3-4 weeks because the part was on backorder. My husband did ask to speak to the manager at this point because the part had been ordered under the assumption that it would take 3-4 days and we were never made aware of the backorder. He never received a call back from the manager. 3-4 weeks had passed (mind you it's in the 90's and we don't have a/c in our house because the heat pump is not functional) and we still never heard from anyone. I called to follow up and was told the parts person had called the company on Monday and was told it could take another two weeks. Not once during this time- did we receive a follow up call or an update from Gentry. The part finally arrived (we're on week 6 now), my husband took the day off work to be at the house when they arrived- the technician arrived to find out that they were shipped the wrong part. My husband then called and asked to please talk to the manager. The manager finally called him back and the right part was received and installed within 2 days. It left us wondering if we waited 7 weeks during the hottest time of the year yet- for the wrong part. I initially thought of Gentry as having great customer service?this was a horrible experience. Every time we called it seemed they were unfamiliar with who we were. By the end it felt like we were begging them to help us and that was not a good feeling to get when you?re spending a lot of money.

From looking at the brief service history on your HVAC unit, it appears that it has had a lot of mechanical problems which is unfortunate since it appears to have been built in only 2008-2009. I thank you for trusting our company with the repairs and I hope you will give us the opportunity to redeem ourselves in your eyes. I am very sorry that you felt our service was untimely and unsatisfactory; however, for the benefit of other Angie's List members, I would like to provide our version of your experience based on the notes and documents from our data base: Our records and documents signed by your husband show that we diagnosed the leak in your system on 03/20/15. We provided a price for the repair on the spot. We were not contacted until 06/02/15 (Over 3 months later) with a decision to make the repair. At that time, the factory was out of stock for the part that was needed and Gentry Heating was quoted a 3-4 week lead time. Our records show follow ups with the homeowner on 06/15/15 and 06/29/15 at which time we confirmed our appointment to make the repair on 07/08/15. You are correct that the part was the incorrect size. The factory had restocked their condensing coils by this time and were able to ship us a new part within 48 hours. We then, promptly, installed the part and even provided you with financing for the repair which is unusual for our industry. You intimated that you were without cooling for more than 6 weeks; you failed to mention that our technician made a temporary, no cost repair so that you had cooling while waiting for the second, proper part to arrive. Also, please remember that approximately 15 weeks passed from the time of diagnosis of the problem and the decision to make the repair; by this time we were in the hottest part of the year. At this time, both parts availability and service lead times always much longer. Had the repair been approved in March, I'm sure that we would have been given an "A" rating for the same service. I would be happy to discuss this situation with you further and hopefully come to some resolution that would make you feel more confident in Gentry's historical reputation of being the leading HVAC provider in our market. Technician (Rick) arrived promptly and was very friendly, professional and courteous. Spent about 90 minutes checking out unit and then thoroughly explaining what he had done and the state of the unit. Also cleaned out outside condenser unit (mud) and recommended some measures to protect it in the future. We signed up for a 2-visit program, so he will be back for heating unit. Delighted with the service...couldn't be happier.

The tune ups/cleaning were done by a younger member of Gentry's staff and I got the impression that he didn't know much beyond the basic tune up although he was very pleasant. I was very glad to have the contract recently when my AC drain line overflowed and I had water spilling out over my kitchen floor and soaking wallboard and baseboards. The tech who came out around 10:00 at night (I WAS put on a priority basis due to the contract) was very knowledgeable and professional and I wish I'd had him for the tune ups. Turns out the drain line looked like it hadn't been blown out or cleaned in a long time. That's something I'll be watching for in future cleanings. He also noticed that the AC was low on coolant and asked if I'd like some added (it was over $100 just for that). Definitely! I knew it hadn't been done in at least 10 years and I wouldn't want to run out of coolant THIS summer. The contract is worth having for emergencies. I wish some of the techs who do the tune ups were more knowledgeable.

John Tate was the sales rep - he was very helpful both in determining what we needed to do as well as following up after the project was complete. He did not upsell, which we appreciated, since we knew exactly what we wanted (new furnace and central air unit). The crew took two days to complete the project and were prompt, efficient, tidy and showed us exactly what they were doing and how the units worked once installed. The ductwork was cleaned several days after the installation, which to my mind was the only hiccup, and not enough to rate the project lower. We hired Gentry based on the reviews on Angies List and you met our expecations and then some. I've already referred a couple of folks to you.

Was a coupon for a $49 AC checkup. I added a one-year service contract going forward though it was not a hard sale on the provider's part. He simply let me know of the option - zero pressure. New home, aging unit and I wanted to insure I stayed on top of it going forward. He was very thorough and professional throughout.

I was contacted very promptly after purchasing the deal and service was scheduled. Serviceman arrived on time and was very professional and pleasant. He completed the servicing of the heating/cooling system very efficiently and found that a sensor was going bad. Total failure. Gentry's negligence will cost me some $6,000, most of which would have been paid for by a home warranty had they not misdiagnosed the problem on 4 different visits when the warranty was still in effect. I'm now seeking quotes from other HVAC companies, since Gentry has offered no help to even partially rectify their mistakes.
Description of Work: After moving to Asheville last summer, I utilized an Angie's List coupon to have Gentry inspect my A/C & Heating system, which did not seem to be cooling efficiently. The serviceman inspected the system on 6/17/14 and found the system low in R410a but was unable to locate a suspected leak. He scheduled a follow up visit for 6/25/14 to perform a bubble soak leak test. He found no leaks, added more R410 and added dye to the system in order to follow up with a dye leak test in 3 months. On both occasions, I made the serviceman fully aware that I had a home warranty that would pay for repairs but it would lapse in November 2014, so I wanted them to be sure to any major issues found. The serviceman communicated directly with the warranty company concerning his work to date. A few days later, on 6/30/14, Gentry serviceman #2 came out when the system stopped cooling. On his inspection, he repaired "wires on the load side of the contactor that were burnt up'. He stated that the previous diagnosis of a leak was incorrect and doubted that any leak would be found on the other Gentry serviceman #1's follow up visit scheduled for September and that the wire repair would solve the cooling issues. I also made this serviceman fully aware of the home warranty that I had which would cover major repairs until November and he stated that "all apps were good" on nothing further should needed to be done. On 9/8/14, the first Gentry serviceman #1 returned to check the dye test. He stated that he found a leak which he repaired and again stated that nothing major needed to be done. After no use in the fall and winter, the A/C was first used again in May of this year. It was showing the same symptoms as with the previous visit by Gentry serviceman #2. A Gentry serviceman #3 advised me that major repairs were needed which at minimum would be $3,405 and could run a** high as $4,800 or more. He later advised that given his uncertainly that the $3,405 work might not solved the problem that the best alternative to make sure the problem was resolved is to replace that entire unit at a cost of $5,051 to $6,457. My home warranty which was in effect during all 4 visits by servicemen #1 and #2 expired in November. The failure to properly diagnose the problem during those 4 visits, when they were fully aware of my home warranty in effect and expiring in November will now cost me some $6,000 based on the diagnosis of Gentry serviceman #3. This serviceman discussed the service failures with his supervisor, but advised me that Gentry would do NOTHING to indemnify or assist me with their errors and that I must bear the full cost of their mistakes.

We really appreciate all of our Angies List customers and nearly 95% of those customers have given us an overall rating of A over that past 3 years. For the sake of others who may be reading this review, I wanted to point out some key elements that your review did not address: The final, expensive repair, that you incurred after you did not renew your home warranty was in no way related to the two previous repairs that were made to your system. On 06/30/14 technician number two reported on his invoice #102446 that "All Opps (operations) are good at this time". the subsequent mechanical failure of your compressor could not have been anticipated by any technician. The compressor shorted to ground which is an internal, electrical failure. Our technician number three did not say that you must bear the full cost of our mistakes; we simply cannot bear the cost of unrelated repairs. Your claim that we misdiagnosed your system on four previous visits is simply false. I understand your frustration and feel horribly that this has happened, there is just no way to logically relate refrigerant leaks and a loose wire on a contactor to a mechanical failure of a motor (compressor). It is really unfair to utilize social media to vent such frustration to our detriment when the facts are untrue. While we can advise a customer regarding their home warranties, it is ultimately the home owner's call regarding their own risk tolerance. In truth, you could have renewed your warranty for another year given that you had two repairs and four service calls during the first 6 months of owning the home. I would relish the opportunity to speak with you on the phone or in person to see if we can come up with a solution that will make you feel more positively about our company. Prior to this year I had an annual service contract. I had purchased the annual contract at a slight increased cost over the $49 coupon for the peace of mind. I have a fairly new home and do not expect to have major problems. Through Angies List the 2014 contract price was about $105. However, this year, I was notified the price increased to about $180 when the annual inspection was scheduled. In the past year I had upgraded numerous parts of the system and choose Gentry to do the work. I am disappointed at the significant price increase & have declined to renew the annual contract. If additional work is needed I will use Angies List to research companies again and choose what I think is best. Regarding the work performed for the A/C spring tune-up. I have been fortunate enough to have Dewayne Banks do all of my work since I began with Gentry. He is absolutely the best service technician I could hope to work with on my HVAC. He is thorough, knowledgable, willing to explain system weaknesses and my options and he follows through with exactly what he promises. Because of the system modifications he performed during the year I asked for him to do this A/C tune-up & check out what he had installed. It went great.

We feel that $179.00 for two in home visits per year is a great value given the task lists performed by our tune up specialists which include cleaning your coils, blower compartment, and outdoor unit. I think the great service you mentioned and the savings you have experienced is a testament to the professionalism of our company and the fact that all of our demand service technicians such as Mr. Banks are certified by the National Association of Technical Experts (NATE). At the risk of sounding too proud, this kind of service cannot come at the cheapest price. The technician was very punctual, friendly and knowledgable. He explained everything very thoroughly and gave me options for additional work. My one complaint is that a few months later I had another company come out to look at the same unit from an a/c point of view and they actually cleaned it for me. I wish Gentry had provided that service with their tune up. And some of their prices were a little bit higher for certain services (like duct cleaning) than other provider's. Other than those issues, I was pleased with the service.

Gentry Heating responded promptly to a request for service via their website http://www.gentryheatinginc.com/schedule-service The repair technician found some serious problems with our 11 year old AC and we had to choose between sinking a lot of money into an old system not working well, and upgrading to a new, more efficient heat pump. The install team arrived on time and worked until the job was done. The duct cleaning technician arrived on time and worked until the job was done. Gentry Heating scheduled the county inspection that had to be performed. There were some problems that arose after the install and after the duct cleaning. I made contact with Gentry Heating and ended up speaking directly with the owner, Duane Gentry (at his invitation) and found him open, caring and eager to make us satisfied customers. He spent an hour with me on the phone, listening to what I had to say and my concerns. He was not in a rush, he did not take my concerns lightly and he told me all that he would do to rectify the problem. We were previous Gentry Heating customers (from more than 25 years ago) and 2 years ago when we purchased an inspection deal through Angie's List and we KNEW their company was operated with integrity, honestly, professionalism and getting the job done right, no matter what it took. This time, they did not disappoint. Even though we had some concerns, Gentry stood behind their service and worked with me to make it right. That, in my book is integrity and professionalism. We continue to be satisfied Gentry Heating customers and we will continue to recommend them.
Description of Work: Service call for AC that was not functioning. Installed new heat pump, UV light, electronic air cleaner and whole house duct cleaning. We also purchased the maintenance plan for 2 years.

Recently moved from Florida to our new NC home. Did not have sufficient heat during the last 2 months of winter. This fixed the problem and my heating costs were cut in half. The first technician Scott Miller identified a potential problem with the AC/Heating pump after a tech from another company failed to do so a month earlier. The 2nd technician, Robert Lewis, conducted an inspection and identified the likely source of the R-22 leak. He repaired it without incurring more costly expenses and parts. After adding the R-22 (Freon) the heating began to function as expected. Robert was professional and appeared well-trained. As a result of his efforts, we signed up with Gentry's energy savings agreement which provides preventative maintenance on our system. Would not have done so if the work wasn't handled so well. Important to note that another local AC/Heating company tech failed to find a problem and suggested a $900.00 fix? to our AC/Heating system. Very pleased.
Description of Work: Inspected and repaired a leak to the AC/Heating Unit. Also, added 3 lbs of R-22 to the system.

That went well. They are a good company. We went back and bought a whole new system from them. I was satisfied with them. They are punctual. They are very professional. Everything that you would expect, they did. There’s no downside with them at all. The price was very reasonable.

Wife and I did extensive research on HVACS. Frankly we were hoping for 6 more months from the 15 year old Trane but once it started sending out occasional unsoicited smoke signals in addition to sounds reminiscent of early 20th Century Industrial Parks we faced our uncertain 'reality' and began intensive research. We educated ourselves on which features met our needs and then lined up a number of top rated HVAC companies. Gentry was second or third on the list . We had used them on an Angie's Inspection Deal a year earlier (2014). The repairman warned us about the remaining life left in our Trane but did not try to scare us into buying a new one. He could have and we wouldn't have been the wiser. We respected his honesty and effort to extend the life of our HVAC. Year later, we scheduled with Gentry along with others. John Tate, the Sales Rep turned out to be the same technician of last year. (He had earned himself a Sales Rep Job since then) John Tate was interested in hearing out our needs and concerns and adapting choices that would meet them. The quality of his attention and sincerity, technical acumen,his respect and Southern styled politeness, -after two to two and one half hours- sold us. i felt he was going to make his commission by working for our needs and our trust. ( I was never disappointed) Every step of the way from contract signing though installation John stayed in touch by phone and in person.He was appropriately available to us at all hours. (There were some installation issues that could have soured us on this Company but John and his Boss were determined to make it right the moment they were aware of it. ) My Wife and I have used Remodeling Contractors, Landscaping Companies etc as we poured 'too much lmoney' into our home over these past 3 years. So we know bad and slack service from people who don't have a clue about integrity. This Company (read the reviews) delivers and earns your trust. Even after installation , John called to check on the functionality of our System and how we were coping with the new technology. By the way we love this HVAC. It is transforming our health!

We were very pleased. The tech showed up on time, was efficient and professional. He was willing to answer questions and since the home is new to us, gave us some invaluable information on our system and how to use it efficiently (for example, at what temps it makes sense to use the heat pump vs emergency heat). He also gave us an estimate on installing a whole-house humidifier, including pros & cons of each option. We really appreciated the time spent answering our questions, as it helped us get clear on the best course of action for us.
Description of Work: We purchased a 2-visit seasonal checkup (one for a/c and one for heat) from Gentry Heating via Angies's List. Both times, the tech provided a seasonal check-up that included tests assessing the health of the system, changing the filter and for the A/C some light cleaning. This recent winter visit, the tech evaluated our heat pump and also gave an estimate for a whole-house humidifier.
