On my initial call to the company, I mentioned specifically that we are seniors and found a 5% discount for seniors on Angie's List for their company. The technicians arrived earlier than scheduled, for which we were very grateful. They called ahead to be sure early was OK - very professional and thoughtful. The diagnosis was a loss of coolant (leak) and a frozen line. They heated and thawed the frozen line but said parts were needed to repair the leak. The estimate was just under $1,000 for the repair. Ouch. The heat pumps are only about 6 years old and we didn't expect that. (We had 2 heat pumps in Arizona where it gets to 120 in the summer and we never replaced coolant in either of them in the 18 years we had them! They were a different brand, however, and the technician said ours are not as high a quality. Still, the fix here was more than we paid total over 18 years in AZ for 2 units, so it came as a shock to us.) They did not have the parts at the first visit and had to order them, saying they would take 3-5 days. After 2 days, they called and said they would have the parts and repair on Monday (5 days after the initial call). The installation of the parts was completed and coolant added. At our request, they checked our second heat pump and found it needed an addition 2.5 lbs of coolant, too, but they didn't have time to check for a leak. We were told we could call for a later appointment to do that check. The technician seemed very competent and was very professional. He did not know about the 5% discount and so it was not included in the final price. He said he would ask about it. I returned to Angie's List today to write this review and cannot find anything about a 5% discount for seniors. I believe it was here because I specifically remember mentioning it to the woman when I called initially for service. It only amounts to $55 but I have not heard back from them yet. I cannot say if the cost was reasonable or excessive. I do not have knowledge enough to make that judgment. It just was a lot for us, being retired. Would I hire them again? I don't know. I hope I don't have to. I will, however, do more looking around if there is a next time only because of the cost. The things they did certainly gave us AC again and they were prompt, professional, and took time to explain things. Since I have to mark "hire again?" on this review, I will put "yes" but I will also look for a better deal next time.

We had just moved into our new home. Within two weeks, the main level and downstairs A/C stops working/cooling. I called Gentry on a Friday afternoon around 4:30. I got the after hours attendant. She took my information and passed it on to the on call tech. Mike (on call tech) called me back later that night. We setup a time for him to look at the A/C unit on Saturday. Mike called before he came, immediately fixed the issue (broken capacitor), and then proceeded to answer every question I could possibly think of. He then gave me a $50 coupon and allowed me to use it for his services that day. Mike was very professional and personable. We will be using them going forward.

It went terrible, as my "What did the provider do?" response documented, and it's only gotten worse. I subsequently located and contacted the company that installed the heat pump, and they told me that the part in question was under warranty and would be so for another two years. The installation date was written in huge letters on the heat-pump and there is no way the technician could have missed that. I wonder why he did not tell me that such 10-year warranties were common in this industry. Today (February 17, 2016), I finally was made aware of the "Provider Response." The way the president of the company responded to my honest assessment of what transpired makes me feel much better, because now I know that the type of behavior I experienced, which I had up until now felt might have simply been due to that particular employee having a "bad day," is not limited to that employee, but may extend to the highest levels of that company. When I do my spring cleaning, I will try to find the estimate left with me when the employee departed. And if I can find it, I will scan it and post it here to substantiate the figures that I provided in my initial review. If it turns out that the employee wrote something different on the invoice, than what he told me standing out in the back of the building by the heat pump (I don't recall having looked at an invoice as we had a lengthy discussion out back, and I felt the numbers to be outrageous), I'll report that, too, because at least it will vindicate the president from his statements. And by the way, the president's implication that their prices are based upon the National Average is another red flag (for me) that would cause me never to use this company again. I remind the reader that outstanding companies do not use the "National Average" price; one characteristic of outstanding companies is that they usually "beat" the average price while providing better service, and that's one reason why outstanding companies are considered to be "better than average."
Description of Work: I'd heard very good things about the company and was pleased to see that it had a good report in Angie's List, and that is what tipped my decision. However, the employee that came to do the check-up on my heat pump had a very bad attitude. He claimed it would cost $1,850 to repair the heat pump. He admitted that the only thing required was a new fan, and the fan would cost $1,200 while the installation would cost $650 (total $1,850). I asked him if it would be alright for me to try to find a new fan on eBay or elsewhere, and he replied that it would still cost $650 to install. I said, "I can see that there are only four screws; are you really going to charge $650 to screw in four screws?" To this, he replied, "Yes. Gotta go by the book." He would not be dissuaded. Based upon Gentry's repair price, I decided to shut down the heat pump for this winter as there was no way I could afford that. I immediately purchased two space-heaters and disconnected the heat pump. Shortly thereafter, a representative from the power company came to check the water heater and I asked him to check the heat pump, as well. He did, and he said it shouldn't cost more than $150 at most to replace that fan, including both the fan and the labor as I could easily install it myself. Apparently, Gentry is marking things up about $1,700.00. I mentioned this to some friends, and then I started hearing some bad reports. I wish I had heard those before trusting the recommendation in Angie's List. I will no longer assume that any of the information on Angie's List is accurate like I did before.

I wanted to note that we made this service call on July 29, 2015, so it concerns me that you apparently decided to be without air conditioning the balance of summer as well. I'm not sure why you have decided to post this review 6 months later, but for the sake of the other, valued Angie's List members, I wanted to provide a little different perspective: Our technician, Will, noted in his debrief from the service call at your home that you refused the repair which was quoted at $988.00 and that you wanted him to allow you to find the part and have him install it for you. We normally do not install parts provided by others as it puts us in a liability situation. We are in the service industry business and we are paid not only for parts but for the expertise to install them safely and properly. Installed properly, there is far more than just the four screws that you mentioned including high voltage connections, syncing the motor with the indoor control, insuring that the fan blades are balanced properly and much more. I am not sure where the $650.00 price came from as this was not noted on your invoice 111076 or in the debrief. If this caused you to have the perception that he had a bad attitude, then I will concede to that. The price you were actually quoted is based on the cost for the part (which is proprietary with the Trane Heat Pump that you have) and an hour of labor to install the same. The "book" that you referred to is based on the National Average pricing for the repair and allows our company to make a reasonable profit in order to provide the quality of service that 99% of the other Angie's List customers appreciate and have come to expect. This includes many of your neighbors who we service routinely. While I respect that the power company employee feels that the part installed should cost $150.00. I can assure you that our cost with shipping for the part was nearly 3.5 times that amount. Again, I am sorry that you were unhappy with our service. Other Angie's List members, please see our 100s of current, positive reviews, our multiple super-service awards, A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau, and being voted Best of WNC for Heating and Air Conditioning - 2014 & 2015. I was not satisfied. They wanted to charge me over a thousand dollars for work that another contractor told me I did not need. They told me things were broken and they were not broken. There was one issue. But, most of the other things they told me I needed to do, I didn't needed to do. They should be more honest. Other members need be careful if they tell you you need work done. You may not need it. They didn't even do everything they said they were going to do. They were supposed to change my filters. They didn't do that.

Two tech's showed up as scheduled by the office. They were professional and friendly. They worked efficiently and performed required testing, cleaning and filter replacement as best as I could tell. The furnace is located in a crawl space under the house & I could not observe the work done. I was satisfied with all aspects of what they stated they had performed. The only concern I had was with the lack of a follow through with my scheduling request. Over the past 1.5 years I have had Gentry do extensive remedial and new installation work on my system. The work was performed by one serviceman. He indicated that he would come back to do a final checkup on his work during this fall tuneup. I specifically requested him this time & it was confirmed by the office. When two different men showed up I was confused. They were very nice about it and explained he was a repair service tech and they were the team to do seasonal inspections. I agreed to have them do the work rather than involve them in my scheduling disappointment. I would have preferred to have the office decline my request when I made it and had explained the reasons for the request. Otherwise, I have been very satisfied with the work, price and professionalism provided by Gentry.

Great !! The technician showed up promptly when scheduled - cleaned and inspected my Trane heat pump / a/c system for the winter, changed the filter and advised that everything was operating correctly. Didn't try to up-sale me - and explained all that he had tested and done. Rick was very professional and courteous and even took the time to help me with adjusting my thermostat which the installers did not. I will definitely use them again. The cost is for the fall inspection and they will be back for the spring. Thank you !!
