I hired Carolina Hydroseeding to re do my yard. They applied bermuda in mid August which was just too late in the season for the grass to really root well. It came up in a few weeks as they said, but it didn't come back the next year. I really could have gotten the same result if I would have had my yard aerated and seeded with bermuda, which would have cost less than $300.00 instead of the 1300 I paid them for a yard of mud the following spring. If you decide to hydroseed, do in no later than Mid July so the grass has enough time to really get good roots before it goes dormant in the fall. But again, you can accomplish the same thing by aerating and seeding yourself. That is what I had to do the spring after I paid them all the money. Because there wasn't any grass that came back. Now I have a great lush green bermuda yard. .

I wanted to rehab my front, side, and rear lawn. My builder used sod in the front yard 5 years ago when my house was built and it has been a disaster on the hard clay of my lot. I had seen a lot of commercial sites near my home that were hydroseeded and they turned out pretty good. I found Carolina Hydroseeding through Google and called them for a quote. They came out to measure my property and patiently answered all of my questions (and I had a lot of them). The quote included bringing in compost and using a tiller/cultivator to prep the site. This appealed to me because I knew that better soil would enable me to grow a better lawn. The quote was slightly less than having sod delivered and installed but no site prep was included with the sod jobs. I paid a deposit and Carol called me to set up lawn-kill date. After the old lawn was dead they set a mid-September date to prep soil and spray fescue. In the meantime I got a watering permit from the Durham water works so I could water a little every day for 4-6 weeks. On the day of the work a dump truck left a load of dirt on my front lawn and a subcontractor spent the morning spreading and tilling. I didn't have much contact with the site prep contractor but they did carefully excavate around a poorly installed TWC cable line. The site prep looked even and complete and they did a good job making sure they did not affect my current drainage patterns. Later that day Dave and Carol came by with the hydroseeding equipment and sprayed my lot. They gave me the rundown on care for the first 6 weeks, I cut them a check and got ready to be on sprinkler duty. The evening of the spray we had some severe weather. Dave called me to ask if any areas were affected. I emailed some digital pics to him and he stopped a couple of days later to respray a couple of small areas. He also advised some downspout changes so I could avoid washing out any areas in the future. It is now 5 weeks later and I am very pleased with the germination. I have a bright green fuzz of grass 4" high. Every day I can see it getting thicker and more spots fill in. I am confident if I keep up with the watering I will have no problems establishing a good lawn. I will definitely recommend this business to friends and neighbors. I am excited to finally have a decent lawn.

Carol and Dave Johnson are really nice people. They arrived as scheduled and did the work when they said they would. However, it was too late in the season to do this and I asked them on several occassions to be sure and they assured me that you could plant burmuda grass through the end of August safely. Unfortunately, that was not true and I spent $1,200.00 and have no yard. I also applied the fertilizer as outlined on the information they provided to me. I did everything as instructed and I have no yard. Carol and Dave hydroseeded another yard in my neighborhood in June and they have no weeds, no mud, and their burmuda is now in and turning green. SOmething went very wrong and I spent $1,200.00 for yard that looks worse now then before they came.
Description of Work: I had my yard hydroseeded by Carolina Hydroseeding. Carol and Dave Johnson own Carolina Hydroseeding. When Carol Johnson came to my house she explained the process. They would come in and spray my yard to kill all weeds and grass. After they spray they would wait 10 days to be sure all was dead. Then they came back and lay a thin layer of dirt, and spray the seed. I was concerned that it was too late in the season since I was planting burmuda grass. Carol assured me that it was not too late and everything would be fine. I paid 1200.00 and I have a very very small yard. Their work was completed August 15. And I followed the watering schedule and I did see grass in September. It was very thin but I was told that it would be thicker in the spring when it came back. Well it is spring and I have nothing but old fescus and weeds and lots of mud. I called Carol and Dave and asked them to come out to look at my yard. They did. And then I spoke to Dave and he said that my yard looks like 80% of the yards in NC. The point is that I paid them 1200.00 so my yard wouldn't look like that.

Response from Carolina Hydroseeding Inc
“Carolina HydroSeeding, Inc. was hired in the late summer of 2008 by her to establish a stand of Bermuda grass in her yard. Per her request, her yard was seeded in August of 2008. Consistent with the business practice of Carolina HydroSeeding, Inc., She was provided with written information providing suggestions as to how she could care for of her lawn in the future, including watering, mowing and soil testing to determine proper fertilization needs, once the Bermuda grass was established. She was later reminded of these suggestions by company representatives after she contacted them. Representatives from Carolina HydroSeeding, Inc. inspected her lawn in September 2008 and confirmed that the Bermuda grass lawn had indeed been well established, thus confirming that its duties under the contract with her was complete. At no time has Carolina HydroSeeding, Inc. been hired by her to provide perpetual care for her lawn. Carolina HydroSeeding, Inc. sincerely regrets any confusion on the part of the member as to the extent of its duties under the contract at issue. Maintaining a lawn is a delicate process, which is why we provide our customers with the written suggestions for lawn maintenance. Whether our customers follow those suggestions or obtain other information and/or assistance to maintain their laws that we establish, however, cannot be controlled by Carolina HydroSeeding, Inc. unless it is also hired to provide such maintenance.
