He charged me $900 because this was such a difficult piece. - much more than I've paid in the past. But it was a 200 yr old table, family heirloom and was in poor shape. But with all the difficulty, drying out, etc., it was refinished over the weekend. He literally contradicted everything he told me probably to get an inflated price. Professionals usually put taps on leg bottoms. When I questioned this, he brought me some plastic things that didn't fit. He did not bring help to carry it into the house. I asked that we wait until he had help, but he was insistent in taking it in - he brought his middle-aged wife to help who had even less strength than me - my neighbor (woman) and I ended up taking over for her. It got banged up getting it in the house. He just wanted to get the money and run. And that's exactly what he did. He saw antiques in my home and commented on the excellent work - he knew I'd had several pieces restored and what to expectI was new to the area, so the only thing I had to go by was the second-hand knowledge by one person. But I've had 2 upholsterers say they refer work, too. I've heard he does a good job - he gets referrals. I don't understand what happened in my case or why.
Description of Work: Was to restore/refinish an antique family heirloom table that had been in damp storage. Said it would take weeks for the wood to dry out enough to finish or the boards might buckle later - but he did it in a weekend. When questions, he said he let it dry overnight between coats. Put walnut stain on a maple finish. When family called - he insisted it was walnut. Used an electric sander instead of hand sanding - shows swirl marks. You always hand sand an antique.
