We could not have asked for a more professional, friendly, and successful roofing job than that provided by Chris Caudill. Our shingle roof had been on the house for over 30 years and, due to some bad or non-existent flashing and other problems from the first roofing, had leaked in various places and had rotted some of the wood in a few spots under the shingles. We found Chris by Googling roofers in this area and by finding some to avoid on Angie's List. However, the most impressive thing about Chris before we met him was his website, www.chriscaudillconstruction.com . On his website he has many pictures of roof jobs he has done and a lot of recommendations. Even better are his discussions and pictures of problems he has encountered and repaired in doing roofing jobs. I think we must have read every word about his roofing...which is extensive. Chris does his website himself and it is easy to navigate and very informative. It was very obvious that this is a man who knows his business! Chris spent two hours on our roof and talking with us before he submitted his estimate. He gave us an estimate for both shingle and metal roofing, discussing the pros and cons of each. We decided to go with the shingle, partly because of the expense of the metal. Our house is located on a difficult driveway 3/4 mile into the woods, through three steams. Chris determined that his trailer would not clear a major rock at one of the streams, so offered to rent a jackhammer and break it up. (This added to our bill, but I did not include it in the price above since it would not apply to others.) Wish we had done this years ago! It took him most of a morning to accomplish this task, but enabled him to do our job. Once started, the three-man crew ripped off old shingles, put up tar paper in sections, then completed the sections before moving on to another part of the roof. At all times, Chris explained and showed us what he was doing every step of the way. Over my husband's studio there are two skylights. This had been a source of leaks, and at first there was a problem, but Chris fixed it the next day. He offers a warranty for his workmanship for two years, so we feel confident that, if there ever was a problem, Chris would immediately address it. The roof looks great. Chris, Jimmy, and Steve could not have been nicer. They are certainly the hardest workers and yet find time to joke and laugh, too. Cleanup was amazing--no nails or debris anywhere. They even washed the skylights! We liked Chris and his work so much that we have asked him to give us an estimate for some deck repair, with plans to work with him again soon. His attention to detail was wonderful. While the total cost of our roof seems like a lot of money (certainly to us!), the cost of the materials and the labor was approximately half and half. When we plugged our job into an automatic online calculator for this area, the costs came out much higher, so we feel Chris's price was fair. We asked him to provide a drip edge that added $239 in cost and labor and he had to replace some cedar boards ($140), but otherwise no extras and certainly no surprises. We just have a big roof!
