I called ThermoDirect for a coupon via Angie's List. The appointment was scheduled for a week later. The company called about an hour before to ensure that someone would be home. The ThermoDirect specialist came at the pre-scheduled time. He did a thorough job checking both heaters/gas packs on our home. He cleaned the burners, flame sensor, and checked for any problems. He removed some rust from both systems. He also showed me some areas in the downstairs unit that could be a problem over the next year or two. Finally, he gave me a comprehensive summary and wrote down his work. Very professional and thorough. I'd use this company again.

The project manager gave us an estimate for all the work we wanted done. He made a couple of valuable suggestions and explained the pro and con of each. We set a date for the work but the company shipped the wrong unit to Thermo Direct. As soon as they realized there was a problem they called us and rescheduled at a time that fit our availability. They called the day before and confirmed that we would be there and were ready for the intallation. The same project manager who had done our estimate arrived with a team of three technicians at exactly the time they said they would arrive and he went into the attic with the technicians to point out in detail how he meant for the work to be done. Once the team was clear on his expectations, he left and the technicians went to work. The technicians were cheerful, careful and meticulous. They took several precautions to make sure they didn't track mud into the house. They asked permission before entering rooms for the first time and kept me apprised of their progress. They worked a full day and then gave me a full report on their progress. While the team leader was filling me in, one of the other technicians vacuumed the floor in the hallway to be sure it was clean. The front yard was filled with old insulation, ductwork, the old indoor unit, and other trash. They cleaned it all up and took it with them. There was not one scrap of insulation left! The second day went much the same as the first. Once the electrician moved the wiring, the team cleaned up the house again and waited for the project manager to come sign off on the job. He arrived about 10 minutes after they notified him and spent at least 30 minutes inspecting every aspect of the work. He had them do some very minor touch-ups with caulking and the like and then he made sure we knew how the new thermostat worked and that we were satisfied with the work. He explained that the official inspection by the appropriate staff in Wake Forest would be the final sign off and told us what to expect. The work was done with the greatest degree of professionalism I have personally ever witnessed. The relationship between the project manager and the technicians was personable and professional and the technicians were the most skilled and professional that I have ever seen. This was an all around excellent experience and I recommend this company without reservation.

Replacing a run capacitor involves turning off the power to the unit, opening it up, discharging the run capacitor, unplugging the capacitor wires and plugging them in to the replacement. Caution to anyone who reads this and thinks about doing the job themselves. The run capacitor is high voltage (370 VAC for my system) so only attempt this repair yourself if you know how to safely discharge the capacitor and work with electricity. Despite being a simple and quick fix, finding parts is the more difficult challenge. Many stores that carry HVAC replacement parts only sell to HVAC companies. Grainger.com retails a replacement for $20. It wasn't stocked at their local store, but could be ready for pickup the day after the scheduled tune-up. I was willing to pay a premium to Thermo Direct for the convenience of having A/C a day sooner. Over the phone they quoted $150 to replace the run capacitor, plus a $70 diagnostics fee even if the unit works after replacing the capacitor. $220 not counting the cost of the sprint tune-up is obscene and the diagnostics fee is like having a mechanic tell you there is a $70 diagnostic fee to replace a flat tire. The tune-up has been cancelled because after that outrageous quote I do not trust Thermo Direct.
