The Mad Hatter Air Duct Cleaning & Chimney Sweep

My only complaint might be that I had inadvertantly mentioned the Angie's list coupon being $35 but it actually was for $50 and the owner did not correct me. Thus he subtracted $35 instead of $50.

I picked this coming because they had a coupon for free fireplace cleaning with your air duct cleaning. I thought it was a good price for both the services. I scheduled an appointment for the same week and they showed up on time. The crew of 2 got to work on the air ducts and it took them a couple hours but they did a very good job. I could hear all the dirt being sucked out of the vents. One of the technicians even pointed out how my main trunk was not sealed properly from a previous cleaning (by another company) and he took care of the problem for me. After they were done with the air ducts the technicians inspected my fireplace. They poked around for a few minutes and told me that it "didn't look bad" and then just vaccuumed in the firebox and cleaned up.

They did a great job. They came on time and cleaned the ducts very quickly. They cleaned up after themselves. There was a power outage while they were here and they waited around until the power come back on so they could finish the job. I will definitely use them again.

We started out by hiring a company we got from a mailer that seemed to have a very good price and coupon. We immediately realized we had been duped when one technician showed up and started spraying all our vents with a 1/2" diameter hose and told us that was sending all the dirt and debris back to the main duct which he had slit unnecessarily. We basically had to ask him to leave. We then called Mad Hatter because they had such great reviews on Angie's List and found them to be very professional from the beginning. Their equipment was quite different and the cleaning process involved 3 steps of vacuuming, brushing the inside of each duct and then vacuuming again each duct. Although 2 technicians arrived an hour early due to a misunderstanding, they worked efficiently and professionally and explained everything they were doing and even patched up the duct that was unnecessarily slit by the previous company. They found our upstairs ductwork to be relatively clean but you could hear construction debris going through the vacuum cleaner from the ducts on our first floor. They finished in the estimated time. They even sanitized our ducts because one of the technicians accidentally flipped a duct and some soot got on our white carpet. Though he vacuumed it right away and got most of the soot out, some stains remained even after my cleaning service came. I called Mad Hatter to ask if they had a solution for getting off the soot and the owner took it upon himself to hire a carpet cleaner for me and even scheduled it. The stains are out. (Do not use Resolve on carpet as it sets the stains in.) We were very pleased with Mad Hatter's work but most of all their commitment to customer satisfaction and going the extra mile. We will definitely use them again.

ADDENDUM - MEMBER REPLY TO PROVIDER RESPONSE: In my opinion, when someone says my "honest" anything you know they are telling you a tale...sales 101. My husband and I have different last names and so do many professional, educated people in this community. I hired Madhatter to clean my dryer duct on a new home. I was told by the technician that he collected a huge ball of lint from the vent. I asked to see it and he said he had already discarded it. I remember one of the tech's names was Emory, it was not him but his assistant. I went on believing my dryer vent had been cleaned. Until the next serviceman, this time the hot water tank installer, mentioned my dryer vent was in need of repair. Now, this was a new home to me and I unaware of the condition... (lousy home inspector)...another story. All this is going on in a crawl space. I am 6' tall female and that is one place I prefer to avoid! So, I never look because I hate hitting my head and spiders etc. I called Jerry he said he will cover the costs to fix the broken dryer vent. He sent some men out and they inspected the vent and told me it is in shambles. I hired my handyman...$400 later I have a dryer vent and I send Jerry the bill. Now, I know he is going to call, which he did to rescind his offer saying the dryer vent was already torn etc. but he would refund the fee of cleaning. The problem I have is his technician LIED! If I did not have another person in the crawl space I would have NEVER known I was RIPPED off. So, his whole response was a total fabrication of the facts. I just do not like dishonest workman. I pay for a service and I have to trust that they do it. I do not go around checking to make sure...half the time I do not know what to look for. So, it is all about TRUST. You can not TRUST Jerry or his technicians. Why would you hire a service you can not trust? The above statement is a prevarication of the facts. I pay to be on Angie?s list to find good help and to lend a hand to others. I do not receive anything for telling the truth, but the contentment of knowing I am assisting others. I am warning fellow Angie list members that my experience with Mad hatter was much less than honest. The statement above changed from the comments he made shortly after my first posting. Those who are dishonest can usually not get the story the same twice, but at least you would think he would read what he wrote prior? I am not here to judge the intelligence of the proprietor, but the integrity of his business practices. I was deceived whether the proprietor will admit, which he will not, but as I said before?what benefit do I receive from being mendacious? And he used that word ?honest? again. Honest is the WORST word to describe The Mad Hatter.

Very informative and detailed in description of service. Very punctual. Raining the day of work - if I had not protested, the 2 technicians would have walked all over my house (white carpeted areas included) in their work boots - said they couldn't take off their shoes due to regulations. (Luckily, I had already counted all the vents!) They were diligent about providing drop cloths and cleaning up afterward. Work was done in 31/2 hours. Discussed mold problem in main trunks and added the extra treatment, supposedly good for 7 years, for $50 extra. In all, satisfied with their work- though still having a musty smell when the heat comes on. The cost was sobering, though not unexpected because I was given an estimate up front.

The work was done within a few days of my call. Two men arrived as scheduled and finished the job in less than 30 minutes. Reviewed their findings with me. Very professional. Price was exactly as quoted during my initial phone call to them. I am very pleased and would not hesitate to refer them.

They arrived just slightly earlier than expected. Worked with us to make sure our four dogs were safe and out of the way, always keeping us informed of what are of the house they were working next. With the coupon from Angie's list I was also able to get my dryer vent cleaned as well.

Story, ducts really needed cleaning. Mad Hatter folks gave me a complete estimate over the phone, made an appointment within two weeks, arrived exactly on time, took the amount of time they said they would, were very careful with my house and were extremely professional. They did a great job and I am a happy customer.

Not only were they on-time, they were almost exactly on time. I think he said they would be at the house at 11:00am and they were there at about 11:01 or 02! He also called before he left Raleigh so that we would have some warning they were on the way. Even though I know we had a lot of dust in the vents, there was NO residual dust on the floor after they were done. They had a very large vacuum device that they had placed outside the front door so most of the noise was outside. They could've just taken a pass on the chimney and charged to do the dryer vent, but as I mentioned above, he took the initiative to offer to clean the dryer (even though I hadn't asked) instead at no additional cost! The entire job took about four hours. They were professional and pleasant without being intrusive. I'm not fond of having people in my house (I work at home and enjoy the quiet) and they did their best to get the job done quickly and efficiently. Most importantly, it was obvious to us (we have a dog that has breathing problems) that after the job was done that the air was much cleaner. We certainly won't wait as long to get the vents cleaned the next time and I will certainly hire The Mad Hatter to do the job again.

When I called for an estimate, the owner walked me through the process. When they came in they didn't do some of the things they said they would, but I complained and they came back to take care of it. They also let me use the coupon they offered on Angie's List for free dryer vent cleaning.

I called them on a Monday, mentioned that I lived out of town and would be in town on Thursday and Friday. They were able to schedule me for Friday. I had a sudden death in the family and called to reschedule. They were so kind to reschedule me for Thursday since I had to attend a funeral on Friday. They were exactly on time. They covered the floor in front of the fireplace. When they left the fresh air was so refreshing coming from our super clean ducts and they had cleaned up everything.

Overall, they did a fine job, there were two individuals both were polite and they were focused on their work. They cleaned up afterwards. The glue work around the installed vent screen outside my house was applied and dried on a bit sloppier than I would have liked (excessive glue/calk was crooked and slightly unsightly even from a distance) but not bothersome enough to ask them to redo the application. The animal screen had an additional piece that appeared to trap the lint from the outside so I removed a small part of the contraption for better air flow. Despite these minor nuisances, I would hire them again.

Overall did a good job. Very helpful and friendly on the phone when making he appointment. Showed up on time and finished the job in the scheduled amount of time. I was a little surprised when the offer was made to treat the inside of the duct for mold for $75 extra (originally included in the quote). When I mentioned this to the technician he threw it in for free. They did discover a source of "black dust" that we were seeing in the house and helped us to eliminate the problem. After the job was completed, we notice a small tear in the vinyl floor of the laundry room which was cause by moving he dryer.

Great. They came by on time, communicated well and provided the service quickly and kept the place clean. Thought the price was right and would use them again for the level one or 3 service. They don't do level 3 services which entails great detailed work but I'm sure Jerry would recommend a company that is insured and bonded like the Mad Hatter.

I was given an estimate over the phone and they came out the same day to perform the work. They had to come back the next day as they did not have a cap in the truck for a dual-flue chimney. They did a good job of keeping our house clean during the process. Very professional and courteous.

The company owner quoted that the work would take approximately 4 hours, but they finished the entire job in about 3 hrs. They were exactly on time and were very meticulous. They used old sheets to protect the floor and moved all furniture back where it was before they finished. I would definitely use this company again.

Wonderful-we called on a Friday afternoon, and they came Saturday afternoon as promised-they were on time and charged exactly what they said they would-the cleaner was polite and helpful (he explained what he did, why it needed to be done, and how often it should be done).

Excellent - they were running a bit late for arrival, courteous and professional enough to call to let us know. Very honest with replies to all questions. We moved into this home last year - and were having several allergies issues - that could be due to the home, or seasonal. Either way - glad to have done this. (Ended up with two additional vents to do - but they charged us the quoted price).

They did a very professional job. They informed us of the duct cleaning process, in detail, when we called to inquire about their services. They allowed us to buy new air filters for our intake units, and they installed them after cleaning the grates.

The company called to ask if they could come about 10 min. earlier than scheduled. Two men were here for 3 hours. They kept areas clean with sheets to catch dirt. The chimney sweeping had not been put on the work order and the main heating/AC unit was added. They were rushed at the end and left debris and two dirty towels behind. The lights were not turned off where they had worked and doors were not closed or locked when they were done. They started out well but ended up slightly below par because of covering the two extra jobs that were not on the work order. I have nothing to compare to the cost of the job but was surprised at how much it did cost. I would give this company an A- , which is not possible to do in the survey.

AWESOME!!! They were very professional, kept my house clean, and treated it as if it were their own. They were very knowledgable and honest (they told me my ducts were VERY clean and wouldn't need cleaned again for several years). I would recommend to anyone; they arrived on time, and were finished quickly and efficiently. A+++. They were not the cheapest, but they were very reasonable and I believe you get what you pay for!!!

Great information from a super-organized and knowledgeable office secretary. 2 men arrived on time, kept the house very clean as they worked, and when they left. The air did seem much cleaner - I noticed it within 24 hours. It still does several weeks later.

Jerry, the person who answered the phone and described the service, provided the price estimate, and scheduled the appt (after I checked around with a couple other companies) was very professional, and explained each step of the process. The day of service, Kris and Ivory showed up on time. They were also very professional and courteous, did an excellent job and the price was as quoted. I would definitely recommend this company.

I live 3000 miles away and Mad Hatter was more then willing to work out payment with me! Which I was thrilled about, so I didn't have to hassle my tenants! They did a fantastic job, and I was told didn't leave until they thought they did a complete job.
