The Mad Hatter Air Duct Cleaning & Chimney Sweep

Some duct hose was removed to facilitate cleaning in the attic. Duct hoses were reinstalled sloppily, and leaked AC into the attic. Sanitizer not applied as was part of the job. I also was not confident the entire hose for the dryer was cleaned. Called and spoke with the owner about my concerns. He agreed to dispatch another technician to reinstall the duct hose to stop the leakage, sanitize the system and check the dryer vent hose from the outside of the house. Second technician corrected the attic hose connections and was preparing to leave. I mentioned the sanitizer and he didn't know that was part of the visit. He did that and then left. No dryer vent check was done as far as I could tell. I will do it myself. Apparently the second technician was not given good instructions which comes as a surprise as this was a return visit and customer satisfaction issue. I will not call again as I have spent enough time with this. It's a couple business days later and the owner has not called to ensure everything went well and I was satisfied. Just as well he didn't.

Jerry answered the phone and was very informative. He took time to explain to me how they were going to clean out the vent and answered any questions that I had. The company gave $10 off for us being Angie's List Customers. I liked that they could fit me in their schedule and they were on time. Derrick and Ivory showed up and were great. It was very, very hot in our attic and there were no complaints about having to go up into the attic to do a thorough cleaning of the dryer vent. They did not show me what they suctioned out of the vent, but they told me there was a lot. Additionally, I had something I needed help and the men were happy to help me with it. They really went above and beyond, and I greatly appreciated that. I would recommend the company and Derrick and Ivory to my friends.

Cleaned a clogged dryer vent. Did a good job with that and identified a problem with the dryer vent line when the person went into the attic. Needed a contractor to address that problem.

Great! I really needed my air ducts cleaned since I had recently had my ceilings scraped and new floors put in. The air vents were visibly caked with plaster and dust prior to the cleaning. The crew that came out was on-time and very courteous. The vents looked very clean and my house smelled wonderful afterwards! The owner (Jerry) followed up with a call a few days later to ensure my satisfaction. I was very pleased with the whole experience.

Overall, the job went well. The dryer vent had not been thoroughly cleaned since moving into our home December 1992. While we regularly cleaned our lint collector at the dryer, we started to notice condensation building up on our dryer door. I called Mad Hatter and requested a complete dryer vent cleaning service. I explained the dryer vent exited our home on the second story and the price quoted was $159 for the service. The service person (Brian) called ahead on the scheduled date and arrived early. Upon his arrival he explained he was not told that the vent was on the second story and he had not brought a ladder. He explained that he would not be able to complete the service. I solved that issue by providing my ladder so the service could proceed. This would be my only criticism with the service. Otherwise, once Brian got started it appears that he did a thorough job. He unplugged the dryer vent by removing quite a bit of wet and soggy lint, including a birds nest. So all and all, I think the job was done well.

Service was provided as described and I was originally charged the quoted price (then discounted later). After the heat/air duct system was cleaned, the men attempted to clean the dryer vent. The two spent over 1/2 hour on this task alone and were honest with me from the beginning that they expected the dryer vent might be problematic, since they were not able to reach their air whips through the duct work. They advised me to not use the dryer until a professional HVAC technician inspected the dryer duct. Since the job was not completed, I was not charged for their time and labor and, instead, Mad Hatter offered me a discount on the final cost of services. ** update.... other experts came to the house to inspect the dryer duct. The dryer duct was discovered to be broken and the dryer had been venting between the ceiling and the floor for a significant period of time. By all accounts, I am very lucky to have not had a fire. And Mad Hatter has now ensured it will never happen into the future. The value of that service is priceless. Mad Hatter honored the coupons listed on Angie's List and were eager to work with me as a customer. After the team left, I later discovered what appeared to be residual build-up, missed by the cleaners, on the duct work about 4' from the return grill. Without hesitation and less than 4 hours later, the team arrived back at my house to fully inspect the system to ensure nothing was missed. There was no charge for this call back. The team re-cleaned the area of my concern and re-sanitized it as well. (All the while being very careful not to allow any particulate or dust enter my house in order to protect the air quality in the house since my son was recovering from a tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy.) I arranged this call-back with the owner, Jerry, that spent a generous amount of time with me on the phone. A gentleman and concerned business owner, Jerry talked with me a length to ensure I was completely satisfied with the work of his team. He was extremely responsive and took great pride in the quality of detail provided by Mad Hatter. It seems this type of pride in his work and honesty in his business is rare. Mad Hatter is top notch. I will use them in the future for other duct work and perhaps my chimney. I recommend them without hesitation to do your duct cleaning.

The person from Mad Hatter arrived on time, looked at my chimney and said there were a few cobwebs. He was in my house for about 5 minutes TOTAL. When I called they said it would be one rate if nothing needed to be done ($80+) and another if work was performed ($139) and I would get a 10% senior discount. I was charged the full amount and when I asked about the senior discount he seemed baffled and said he knew nothing about that but finally gave me 10% off. Way too expensive for a few cobwebs. MAY27,2011 UPDATE The owner of Mad Hatter contacted me after I submitted my original report and he was very concerned about the service I received and the cost to me. He was sincere in his apology that I was not happy with the service and wanted to rectify the situation. He spoke to the person who came to my home and then called me back. He then sent me a refund check of $54 for the difference between an inspection and a service call. He was extremely pleasant to deal with and he is a person who cares a great deal about his company name and his customers satisfaction. I think that customers like myself should call the company about a problem and try to rectify the situation before posting a bad report and I did not do that. I would use this company again.

Got a quote for the work while on the phone with them (including some free work because I mentioned angie's List). One price for the dryer duct and then a per air vent price (I went around the house and counted all the vents to get my estimate). They set up a time right then for their workers to come out. We were having other work done at the house so there were always workers there. I forgot to write down the appt date and time and when I came to the house one day, they were just wrapping up and getting ready to leave. Told me what they found (apparently the vents had either never been done or it had been a long, long time) and gave me a recommendation for follow-up (2 years on the dryer duct - can be real dangerous and a fire hazard - and five years on the air ducts). Paid by credit card over the phone. I like these guys and will use them again.

They came in and did what they were supposed to do, and they left. It went well. They cleaned up after themselves.

These men did a great job. I could open my ducts and see animal hair from a prior owner's pets as well as dust and dirt. After they left, my home was much cleaner and smelled sweet, clean and fresh and the air ducts have no visible debris at all. Also, my dryer is working to dry laundry much faster due to the fact that it vents to the roof and had collected debris. The service is not cheap but for anyone with allergies who likes a clean home, this is money VERY well spent. I will absolutely do air vent cleaning in the future as needed. The men who worked on my home also put sheets down on my new carpet which was nice.

Went fine, arrived on time, were polite and completed job in timely & efficient manner. Would have preferred shoe covers to walk upstairs on carpet as dryer is on 2nd floor.

I called yesterday and was scheduled for today. The gentleman from Mad Hatter's actually showed up about 30 minutes early. He was very polite and professional. He put down dropcloths from the door to the fireplace and was careful not to scratch the hardwood floors. The entire process took about 35 minutes. First they use an extendable brush to clean the inside of the chimney and then they push a long shop vac hose up into the chimney to get all of the debris. I could hear a ton of stuff coming through the vacuum hose and it made me glad we decided to get the chimney cleaned. Overall, I was very pleased with the service. Would definitely recommend.

My overall interaction with Mad Hatter Air Duct Cleaning was okay. We were sneezing a lot while the work was going on but we thought that may be getting Benzoin might help. I thought that they were a little expensive. They did not mess anything up. I suppose they did a good job. I would probably not use this company in the future because of their pricing.

Prompt, professional. Glad they recommended cleaning dryer vent. Something we don't think enough about. Discovered it was installed by builder almost 19 years ago improperly. We bought a new washer and dryer recently. When they were to be installed the techs informed us that the dryer vent needed to be cleaned, and that they couldn't hook it up until then. We called one co. and the guy cleaned the vent. When the tech came out to do the final installation he informed us that the vent was only open about 2% and that we needed to have it cleaned again. This time we called The Mad Hatter. The tech arrived 30 minutes before our scheduled time and was very thorough. He also placed a screen in the external opening to the vent so that there would be no more need to remove nests, and because the standard screen wouldn't fit our vent, he created another out of screen and didn't charge us for it. You can be sure I'll be calling The Mad Hatter for all my vent needs, and recommending them to all my friends.

I doubt my chimney was cleaned or inspected thoroughly. Mad Hatter spent 35 minutes on my chimney and charged $149. That equates to over $255 an hour, which seem exorbitant. On numerous websites, I read that it should take about an hour. In addition, the technician did not check the chimney from the roof. I contacted the owner via email about these two issues. He said that 20 to 45 minutes is the length time it takes Mad Hatter to clean a chimney and the price was partly because of round trip travel time. He also stated that a level 1 inspection did not include an assessment from the roof. The owner pointed out that I had already paid them and signed their paperwork. He made no offer to recheck it. I replied that ?round trip? time is not a valid argument for a higher cost since the technician has a predetermined route to optimize his time. He does not return to their office between each job. Furthermore, I live in the city limits. I also inquired as to whether they follow guidelines for inspections set forth by a government agency or a professional organization or if this is merely their own policy. The owner did not respond.

The crew arrived timely and introduced themselves. I showed them where the dryer and vent were located. They weren't able to get to the dryer connection or to the outlet, so they had to go into the attic and separate the ductwork to clean it. Before they started they told me that since they had to go in from the attic space this would cost $20 more than the quote. They had to uncover the duct pipe from the insulation, then take it apart to clean it, so I considered this a reasonable upcharge. They did the job quickly, and cleaned up after themselves.
