The Mad Hatter Air Duct Cleaning & Chimney Sweep

I have used Mad Hatter multiple times for my primary residence and rental properties that I own. Typically I get the same technician- I don't remember his name- he is very professional and very helpful. I received a returning customer discount, which I appreciated. This is a great company and I strongly recommend them. They are very customer focused.

These guys were on time and very polite and professional. They worked quickly and quietly, and did a very thorough job.

Both guys, especially the guy doing the duct cleaning, were very efficient and professional.

Technicians were very prompt and completed the work in a timely manner. The quote was given to me over the phone based upon my air vent count and the final price matched. There were no hidden charges which I liked. Very straightforward and very beneficial.

Kent and Lance arrived on time and set to work. They took down all the vent covers to clean them and discovered that the ducts in half of our leased house had been cleaned recently while the other half were very dirty. They told me what they had found and offered to reduce the cost from the original estimate. My husband has COPD and has always coughed more in the half of the house with dirty vents. Now we know why. They put sheeting down to protect the carpeting and cleaned the dirty vents thoroughly. Then they checked with me to be sure the sanitizing process was safe for him which I felt it was. After sanitizing against mold, bacteria, etc. they ran the furnace fan for about 10 minutes. When they finished, Lance came in grinning to say that my husband had not coughed once since they sanitized. It also made the air in the house smell much cleaner and fresher. A day later, as I write this, his coughing has almost stopped. When they presented the bill, the cost had dropped by a third, and I was delighted to write them a check. Both young men are part of their family owned business and take pride in the quality of their work. They said if there were any problems they would gladly come back at no charge to fix whatever was wrong. They were friendly, courteous, and thorougly professional. I can't recommend them strongly enough.

Had never had the service before...techs were very nice and explained what they were doing.

Technician was right on time and did the work as expected. He was very nice and very thorough, and made some recommendations to prevent mold and about a cap for the dryer vent.. We are pleased.

Two technicians arrived promptly and went to work. They finished the job in 35 minutes. Courteous, professional, cleaned up after themselves, and unobtrusive. I gave an "N/A" rating on price because I really have no clue as to how this company compares.

Kent and Ivory cleaned the ducts using shop vacs (which stayed outside) and a long flexible tube the looked like those you use at the car wash to vacuum out the interior of your car. They snaked them down into the ducts through each of the vents, one at a time. Kent did one end of the house. Ivory did the other end. I had to remind one of them that this was a ?no shoes? house. They also had a rotary brush that was about 7? or so across. At the end they sprayed the disinfectant into the system, and asked me to sign the form saying I?d inspected everything. At this point, they?d only been here 1 hr. and 10 minutes. I went to each of the vents and found lots of dust balls, grit on the floor of the ducts, and even a 2? piece of dusty garbage in the vents. I also found some sticky dark stuff, which I could wipe off with my finger, and some stuck-on dirt that was harder. If there was this much dirt where I could easily see it, I wondered how much there was farther in. So I got a mirror and flashlight and saw it was dirty deeper in, as well. I told them I expected the vents to be clean, the way my floor is free of dust balls and particulate matter after I vacuum it. I also asked them why they hadn?t washed the vent covers, because I thought this was part of the deal. They said they didn?t think they needed it, so I showed them a dirty one, and they washed them all in soapy water. I rinsed them with the hose and set them out to dry. I thought they were supposed to do this at the start so they could be dry by the time they left. They agreed to vacuum the ducts again. We all heard lots more particles going through the vacuum hose. Ivory went around with a bottle of cleaner and a cloth and cleaned the duct area directly under the vent covers, where I?d found the sticky dirt. I asked if they would repeat the disinfection spray, since it?s supposed to be done after the vacuuming, and they did. I told them I?d put the vents back myself since they weren?t dry yet. Both Kent and Ivory (and I) were pleasant and cooperative through the whole cleaning. I talked to Jerry on the phone a few days later and told him my ducts still smelled musty and ?mousey?, and also told him how involved I had to be to get a half way decent result. He apologized and told me that to get rid of the odor I should buy a can of Lysol and spray it in the vents, one at a time, when the heat pump would be off for awhile. I should make sure to spray it as far into the ducts, going each way, as I could. I did this, and boy, it?s not easy to get your hand, and the can, and then press the nozzle, in each vent! There?s just not much room in there. My hand got pretty scraped up. Also, this stuff is not good to breathe and I was seriously dizzy for a day, including a headache, even though I left the house for a few hours right after I did it. I used nearly the whole can. I keep the vents closed for a full day, then ran the fan for 30 minutes (with me outside). This did make a difference and the air smells clean from my vents now. I think that for $395.00 I should not have had to keep after the guys to do a good job. I also think I should not have had to spray the Lysol. The next time, I?m going to rent a shop vac with a long tube, push a dusting wand into the vents, and spray Lysol afterward. They were ready to leave after only an hour and ten minutes, and Mad Hatter charges $395.00! Then tells me I need to spray Lysol! The work they did is worth something, but not $395.00! Maybe $100.00. You may as well just pay far less and hire one of those company's that advertises in the mail and charges $75.00 because I'm sure you'll get a comparable result. I wish I had!

There was a mixup in the original date to come out and do the cleaning. It was a good thing I called to reschedule, because I wasn't on the calendar when I thought I was.However, I rescheduled with the owner, and everything worked out just fine.They showed up at 8am as promised. The work was not messy. The guys took great care to make sure everything was left just as they found it - except the dryer vent was much cleaner, of course!I could see blobs of dust going through the hose as they made their way through the line.This made me realize I need to do this cleaning at least once a year!

Made contact on first phone call. I had a count on the number of vents in the house, so I was able to get estimate over the phone. Made appointment because price was reasonable. Workers showed up on time and had the job done and cleaned up within the initial time estimate. They found that sealing tape had fallen off dryer vent and fixed the problem with new heat-resistant tape for no extra charge. They have a final job check list. I followed their check list and found two missing screws on vents which they promptly fixed. That's a great way to avoid omissions or minor mistakes. Every contractor could take a lesson from that approach.

They did a great job. There were very responsive and flexible with the time for performing the service. Originally I wanted to get the dryer ducts cleaned and some flexible piping replaced. When I saw the job they did with the dryer I decided to get the air ducts cleaned as well. I set up some time for the service which they completed a few days later. The work that they did was excellent. I would definitely use them again and recommend them to others.

Their prices were pretty good. They did a really good job cleaning out the chimney.

I thought they were great. The owner was very personable. He went into great detail to explain the service and made sure that I understood it. I have small children so when they came in, they were very conscious of the house and the safety of the kids and things like that. I thought they were great. I didn’t compare prices. They were professional and well informed. They were timely and everything. I will use them again. They do multiple things and I will definitely consider them for other things as well.

They arrived when they said they would, were very professional, and worked hard the entire time. I was pleased with their work. I would have preferred a little more information about what they were doing. For example, they had a number of large brushes, but I never saw them in use. The tubing they used to connect to the vacuum looked like it could stand to be replaced, but I don't know whether that affected the quality of the work they were able to perform. Overall, I thought they did a great job.

The inspector spent very little time in our house and he didn’t find the very obvious leak in our fireplace. We spent $79 for their services. On their invoice, it said that they spent a total of 11 minutes looking at the fireplace. We had complained about a leak in the fireplace. On the invoice, it didn’t say anything about looking for the leak or looking for causes. The leak is still there in the fireplace and we can’t use it until we get it fixed. We still don’t know what’s wrong with it. We called, set up the appointment and everything seemed fine. Our realtor went to the house with the inspector because we couldn’t agree on the scheduled time. It was between my fiance, our realtor and I. Our realtor said she would be there for the inspection. So, the inspector met the realtor at the house and spent 11 minutes in the house. My fiance talked to the fireplace inspector and he said everything looked good even after my fiance asked about the leak. Then they left and we paid the invoice. They were helpful and courteous.

They were on-time (early, in fact) and handled everything seamlessly. The duct cleaning was absolutely flawless and did not require any direct interaction other than telling them where each duct & return was located. They also sanitize the duct work with a water vapor based salt solution that actually freshened the air tremendously. Considering that my home was owned by smokers (they found an old pack of cigarettes in one of the ducts) it was a noticeable difference. I did see some left over soot & ash on the fireplace hearth after they were done & gone, but it was very minimal. The next day, we noticed a mildew/mold smell coming from one of the returns. I immediately called Jerry to inform him and he setup another crew to come back and fix it. They did another clean & sanitize job on this one return and the smell is completely gone. Ivory was the Mad Hatter technician. He arrived a little before the scheduled time, which was good for me, and started to set up immediately. We have a three story townhome and he padded the corners going up the stairs and around corners and doors so that no paint was rubbed off by the hoses. I had moved lamps and other items from the work area and covered some of the furniture nearest the vents, and Ivory added his drop cloths to broad areas around the vents and cold air returns. Where vents had been painted around the edges on the ceililngs and walls, he very carefully used a blade of some sort to lift the vent covers off without chipping the paint. There were lots of broken pieces of sheet rock and some paint in the 1st floor cold air return (apparently from workmen when the house was first built) and Ivory spent a lot of time scraping that off the floor and walls of the return, reaching way back into the ducts to clear it. It was 100% better after he finished and you could tell immediiately that the circulating air was hugely cleaner. He also spent a lot of time on our dryer vent and cleaned that of built up lint. We've lived in this house for one year and this was the first time I could see lint blown out the vent to the outside. When Ivory was finished cleaning everything he sanitized the ducts. I have allergies and air borne particles usually cause hearty sneezing, and I had absolutely no sneezing or discomfort from the sanitizing. Jerry, the owner of Mad Hatter, was great to work with and was able to get me set up very quickly. Ivory was very professional as well. I highly recommend them and their work.

They arrived promptly, put down protective draping over the floors, hooked up the vacuum equipment and two people worked on the job. They also cleaned the chimney flu. They cleaned up all evidence of dirt/dust and the whole job took about 4 hours.
